Miriam
Cody went out the door, and walked to the edge of the water, crossing his arms when he stopped.
“Some things never change. Couldn’t you at least use the main entrance? Like a normal person?” He shouted with a hint of a smile on his face. I smirked, our banter was something I missed, Cody was a good friend.
“Where’s the fun in that?” I shouted back, earning a laugh and a shake of his head.
I noticed a movement outside of the corner of my eye, and when I looked I saw Arthur. He was staring at me from the huge ground-floor windows.
Noticing where my eyes went, Cody spoke.
“You scared me. I was going to run after you, but then he stopped me, reminding me of your obsession with water.” - my expression got dark. I didn’t look away from Arthur as I answered. I was aware that he could hear me.
“How thoughtful of him.” - the disdain was evident in my voice. Cody flinched slightly. I started swimming back to shore.
“Miriam, please, take it easy, you guys need to talk.”
“Do we now? About what, prey tell?”
I walked out of the water not stopping as I picked up my dress to put on.
“Well, that’s none of my business... I’m headed to town for supplies. I’ll be back before dinner time. There are scrambled eggs and toast in the kitchen I made for you.”- I looked at him and nodded "Thanks".
He walked away, waving at Arthur, he went for the car and drove away.
I started walking to the back of the house, and Arthur came to meet me in the kitchen. I ignored him, walking past him like he was nothing to me.
"Miriam..." I heard him but kept pretending I didn't.
I stomped up the stairs and slammed the bedroom door. I took a deep breath now that the air was free of him. I have held my breath since I came back into the house.
I headed for the in-suite bath. There was a marble shower along the wall. I got in and turned on the spray and went under the water stream, letting the water wash away the remaining blood stains and the dried sweat on my skin.
When I got out of the bathroom, there was a clean change of clothes waiting at the edge of the bed.
A t-shirt and basket shorts. It was his. I didn’t want to wear it. I went to open the other closet door and got in. Everything was empty. I had no other option but to wear what he left on the bed for me.
His smell lingered on his clothes, and it was revolting how it made my heart ache. Bringing back memories I just wanted to forget. Ignoring those feelings, I put on the clothes, tying the shorts as tight as I could. Otherwise, they would fall down my hips.
With my fingers, I slowly started to untangle my hair. Once finished, I headed out the door like I didn’t care to see him downstairs.
I walked into the kitchen and there he was, sitting on the stool. With his hands on his head, he looked down at the kitchen counter.
He lifted his head and looked at me.
I would lie if I said I didn’t feel anything, even after all that happened between us, I wanted to run to him. As the thought crossed my mind widened, and I remembered he can sense emotions, s**t.
Shaking my head, I decided to make it clear it wasn’t going to happen.
“Hi. Thank you for bringing me here. You guys helped me, just let me know how much I owe you.”- shaking his head, he looked down.
“You don’t owe me anything.”
“Right, okay, I’m going to eat and then I’m out of here.”- he lifted his head with a wide-eyed expression.
“You don’t need to go right now, we need to get you clothes and your passport replacement is being taken care of by my people.”
“I don’t want to owe more than I do already. Just give me a lift to the nearest town and I’ll be on my way.”
“Miriam, just eat something, please. We will talk later. You need to take these painkillers.”
“No need for painkillers.”
“Why? Aren’t you in pain?”
“It's nothing.” He got up abruptly, scratching in stool on the floor. “Nothing?”; he walked around the counter to stand in front of me.
“Miriam, you were tortured for hours! ”; his concern pissed me off.
“You’re worried all of a sudden? Guess what, Arthur? I don’t need your advice. I learned a long time ago to look after myself.”; he visibly flinched.
Maybe I shouldn’t bring up the past. Whatever we had back then, can never happen again.
“Look, I’m sorry for saying that. To have brought the past to our conversation. It doesn’t matter any more, we were kids, it ended how it should have.”
He shook his head, denying what I had just said.
“No Miriam, I should be the one to apologize for all the things I left unsaid. For how much I hurt you. I had my reasons for doing so, but I also wished I had handled it better. Not that it matters now.”
I felt uncomfortable hearing him speak about the past. Having to pretend it didn’t bother me the way things ended.
I just wanted to get out of here. Get my baby and go home, back to my life.
I still needed to check in on my crew and with my general. How many lives were lost? The thought brought a shadow over my head, changing my mood quickly.
He noticed my inner turmoil and the last thing I wanted was to share my mission with him.
“Can we not speak of the past at all? I prefer it that way.”
He seemed disappointed but didn't protest against it. “Of course.”
The silence was awkward as we stared at each other. Until my stomach made a loud noise. My cheeks heated.
“You have to eat something.”
He turned around, heading for the kitchen counter where a plate was. He grabbed it and scraped the entire thing in the bin.
I couldn’t help the giggle that came out. Cody was going to be pissed if he saw his culinary efforts wasted.
He looked surprised by my giggle and smirked at me. “What? I couldn’t let you eat carbonized toast and tasteless eggs...”
Now that I noticed, it smelled like burned to
“He’s going to be pissed.”
He shirked his shoulders. “As long as he doesn’t find out, I think I’m good.”; he looked at me. Waiting for me to confirm that I wasn’t going to be the one to tell him.
“Well, unless he asks, I won’t say anything.”
He gave me a half smile.
“I guess that works.”
