Mafalda
In all my life I never felt so lonely.
Diego was living a party life as always, all pack issues were handled by his dad. Who even though was retired, kept working as usual. Diego was alpha only in theory. Our pack was peaceful and without any invasion threats, so he slacked off his duties big time.
He comes home late every night smelling of other women, some I even recognise the scent of some females from my own pack. Mena feels restless most nights knowing exactly what he's doing.
After our bond snapped into place I was surprised, to say the least. At the time it felt like a dream, he loved me or at least pretended he did very well, although he never really changed his ways.
Every weekend there was a party at the pack house. He believed that as luna of Magomoon, I had to only appear by his side at all times and look pretty like the trophy I was.
I was trying to get into med school, so studying was my biggest priority. In hopes that I might stop pursuing my career dream, he asked me to marry him, I made him wait four years.
And if it wasn't for our mate bond I would have never married him. Instead, I would've left him a long time ago, but because of the suffering, I knew caused Mena to leave Kaz I never did it.
Diego was obsessed with Miriam. And before we discovered we were mates, after finding she was pregnant with Arthur's baby he told everyone the baby was probably his. All to cause gossip and put Miriam under pressure, he was disgusting.
When I saw his advances and indecent proposal to Miriam, I wanted to believe it was her fault; She was always the one getting all the attention, even if she tried to avoid it. So because I was recently mated, and was still believing the dream was possible. I blamed it on her. What kind of friend does that?
Never in my life have I missed Miriam so much as I missed her now.
My mother died this morning and the only one I wanted to talk to was her.
I knew they were here on holiday because I saw the picture Miriam posted on f*******: when they were on the plane. Why was it so hard for me to just call her house?
I took a deep breath and hit the green button.
"Hello?"
"Oh, hi Elsa."
"Mafalda! Hi, honey is good to hear your voice. How are you? It's been a while..."
"I'm not so good, my mom died Elsa." I couldn't contain the tears as my voice broke.
"Oh, honey! I'm so sorry! It's going to be okay. Do you want me to come to see you? Do you need anything?"
"No, no Elsa. It's okay. The pack is arranging the funeral. I was hoping to speak to Miriam, is she home?"
"Oh. Miriam is not here darling, she's working, only Lucas is here. Mafalda, honey, would you like to come over? I just made vegetarian lasagna, your favourite if I remember. Irina will be home from uni soon. Come home, darling." Elsa was like a second mother to me. I felt my heart squeezing at her offer, I really wanted to go to their home.
"Okay. I'll be there in ten minutes."
"Okay see you soon darling."
I heard the bedroom door open as I put the phone down. Diego was coming into the bedroom drunk again.
"Hey, babe. Sorry about your mom."
He moved to hug me, and I stepped away from him. He reeked of alcohol and s*x, and I wanted to vomit.
"At least respect me today, I just lost my mom." He frowned, not getting why I moved away from him.
"I am being respectful. I just came here to comfort you."
"I don't want to do this now. I'm leaving for a few hours." as I grabbed my bag to leave the house he grabbed my arm forcefully hurting me. "Stop you're hurting me!" I cried as he squeezed my upper arm.
"Who do you think you're talking to? You leave when I say you can leave." I never confronted him, I always chose to pretend nothing happened. But right now I couldn't take his humiliation any more.
"I'm talking to a man who is supposed to be my husband, my mate. And instead, I'm talking to a drunk who cheats on me and reeks."
He slapped me so hard and pulled me to face him.
"You will show respect to your Alpha!" He shouted as he yanked my arm again. I cried out in pain. The bedroom door busted open and his dad walked in.
"Diego! Release her now!" My father-in-law and former alpha entered the room, and Diego released me immediately.
"How many times do I have to reprimand you about the way you treat your luna, Diego?! Now you hit her too? What kind of a man are you?" Alpha Robert turned to me. "Are you okay Mafalda?" I nodded ashamed that he had to once again intervene in our fights. But never before had Diego gotten violent with me, usually, he just cursed and shouted at me.
"Dad, this has nothing to do with you!"
"Shut up boy! You're in my house, and I won't let our pack's luna suffer in your hands!"
"Alpha Robert." I said in a small voice, "May I be excused? I wish to visit some friends."
He frowned.
"Where are you going my darling?"
"To the Moura's house. I want to see my friends. They are the closest I have to a family." Robert nodded while still frowning.
"You are not a prisoner to this pack Mafalda, you are the Luna. You don't need my permission or anyone's," he said while glaring at Diego. "But, it would give me some piece of mind if you took guards with you."
"What gives you the right to say what happens in my pack?!" Diego was raging now, almost out of control. Robert glared at him and must have said something through mind-link because Diego turned pale instantly. "Go, Diego! Take a shower and meet me in my office in twenty minutes. Now!" He walked past me while glaring at me with so much hate, it caused Mena so much pain that I almost collapsed.
Turning to me Robert gave me a small sad smile.
"I'm so sorry you lost your mother my darling. Your dad and your mom were my closest friends. I promised your mom, I would look after you. And I will. My son needs to be reminded of what being a mate means, I'm sorry if I failed you my darling."
I was sobbing in his arms, alpha Robert was like an uncle to me.
"Thank you alpha."
"Don't thank me. Are you sure you don't want to take anyone with you?"
"I am alpha, it's very close by. And besides, if I'm honest I might stay there for the night."
"Alright, darling. Call me if you need anything."
"Will do alpha."
As we walked out of the room together, Gia was sneaking into Diego's room. We both saw it, and I wanted to die of shame. How much more can he humiliate me?
"I don't know how much more I can take alpha..."
"I'll talk to him." It was all he said before walking past me in the bedroom direction, I ran. I only stopped when I got inside my car. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. Small threads of electricity sparked from my fingers as I tried to control my grief and sadness. "Mena, please help me before I lose control!"As always she came forward and slowly my pain subsided.
I took another deep breath, as I drove away from the pack house.
"Thank you, Mena..." She wined "We have each other Mafalda."
It was ten minute drive, I parked in front of Miriam's family house and immediately Mena felt at home.
I knocked on the door and Elsa welcomed me with open arms as she too cried.
"I'm sorry for your loss my darling. You always have a home with us." She brought me inside and fused over me drying my tears with her hands.
"Mafalda! What's this?! Who did this to you?" She was furious. I had completely forgotten about the slap he gave, I didn't even look in the mirror. s**t, I should have waited for my fast healing to kick in.
"Oh it's nothing. It happened in training Elsa, I'm okay." I assured her, only she didn't believe me. A deep voice distracted us both.
"Is everything alright?" Miriam's dad, Hugo walked behind Elsa. "Come here, kid." He walked to me and gave me a hug and I couldn't hold the tears that started streaming down my eyes.
"Shh... it's okay Mafalda. We are here for you kid. I'm sorry about your mom. Bea was a rare soul, and a dear friend. We will all miss her." I managed to collect myself and step back a little.
"Thank you Hugo." He frowned, as he assessed my face. I quickly tried to play it off. "Training"
The look on his face was murderous, he was so angry, I was slightly scared of him. His deep blue eyes glared at the mark on my face.
"Mafalda, your mom maybe gone. But I'm going to that house and I'll teach that good-for-nothing piece of s**t a that no one messes with my family..."
"Hugo it's f-..."
"It's not fine! I knew he was..." He stopped as we heard little footsteps come into the room.
"Autie Mafalda!" Lucas came running into my arms and jumped giving me a big hug. "Come play auntie, come on!"
I wiped my tears and smiled at the little boy that was his dad's face and had my best friend's eyes. "Hi sweet boy!"
Elsa extended her hand to him, "Come with nana Lucas, let's make some iced tea for auntie Mafalda!".
"Yes yes, iced tea is so good auntie! I'll make some for you!" He smiled at me making my heart knit together for a split second.
"Thank you, Lucas." They left me and Hugo alone again. He exhaled pinching the bridge of his nose.
"I'm sorry for losing my temper. The last thing you need is my anger, I'll save it for Diego."
"No uncle, please it's okay... I'm okay now it won't happen again I won't let it happen." He nodded exhaling.
"Okay I trust you to handle it, but know that I'll keep an eye on you know... and I'm calling Robert later."
"He knows. He reprimand him, and made him stop." He seemed to think about something for a moment before speaking.
"Okay. Enough of talk about that piece of s**t. You have dinner with us tonight, and if you want, you can sleep in Gonçalo's bedroom tonight, he's at a friend's house. Irina is on her way home and Miriam called earlier, she'll be home this afternoon."
"Oh really? Good, I really miss her." I couldn't help but feel anxious.
"I know you two have grown distant these past few years, but she loves you. And I honestly hope you heal before she sees you."
I laughed at how seriously he was taking my best friend's temper. Sure she was hot-headed, but it wasn't that bad.
He gave me a mysterious look.
"She's not the same Miriam you knew Mafalda. She has changed." I frowned.
'What do you mean Hugo?"
"I think it's best if she tells you. Come, I made cookies with Lucas. I cannot promise you won't lose a tooth or two, so chew carefully." I laughed trying to imagine his hulking figure making cookies with Lucas.
I needed my best friend back. I couldn't help to feel nervous, after all, I had to face Miriam sooner than I expected.
