Gerard It was the fifth punching bag I ruined in less than an hour. When I was assigned this rescue mission and Arthur told me the name of his mate, I had a weird feeling about her, after all, she had the same name as my ex-girlfriend. When saw her chained hanging from the ceiling by her wrists I saw red, I started throwing punches at the guy until Cody made me stop, otherwise I would have killed him. Notting prepared me for knowing that my Miriam was Arthur’s fated mate, it felt like I was being gutted, and it was driving me crazy. I knew he had a mate and that he had to leave her behind because of Antonio, but he never mentioned her name. I can’t believe I never connected the dots! It all made sense now. I understood now why she was so afraid of commitment. I never told anyone who she was, but Arthur knew I was seeing someone, he even helped me a few times by taking on extra work, so I could travel to England to be with her. He understood me better than anyone and advised me to go all in, to commit to her and leave all this behind. Having an affair with a human was frowned upon by my clan and by most of the vampire community. I loved Miriam so much that I was willing to abandon my title and clan powers for a chance of having a normal life with her. But she would never commit. It didn’t matter all the things I did to prove to her I was never going to leave, in the end, I even proposed only for her to end everything between us. But damn, how I missed her, I even missed her kid. HOLY s**t! Was he Arthur’s? Their resemblance was uncanny... Miriam never told me about his dad, only that he didn’t know Lucas existed. I never told her I was a vampire, hoping I would get a chance once she fully accepted me. Did she even recognise me the day I rescued her? All these questions were making me lose my mind, I was furious and started trashing the gym. “WHAT HAPPENED GERARD?” Frank’s voice made me stop. I didn’t even realise I wasn’t alone any more. “You finally heard me! I was beginning to be worried. What happened? Why are you destroying the gym?” s**t, I must have completely blocked everything else around me. Frank looked surprised to see me lose my s**t. “I’ll get everything replaced,” I said trying to avoid the conversation. “I don’t care about that. What is going on with you? The last time you started destroying things you were on a bender for almost a year, and you never told me why... Are you going to tell me what is happening or should I assume it had something to do with Arthur’s mate rescue mission?” “SHUT UP!” Frank opened his eyes wide in astonishment. I very rarely loosed my temper. But with him saying that out loud in my father's domain, it put Miriam at risk and it could make me have to answer questions I wasn’t willing to give the answer to. My father wouldn’t hesitate to kill her. After all, he’s been after a deal between races for a while, even using my own sister to achieve it. A mate would complicate things for him and Miriam would be in danger. “Gerard, what is going on? This isn’t like you.” “Sorry, I’m on edge, just leave me be.” “No! You are going to tell me what’s going on, I’m not letting you get under your dad’s bad side again.” I couldn’t blame Frank for being afraid of my dad’s way of dealing with things. After being on a bender, drinking and partying like there was no tomorrow for nearly a year, dad got tired of my mess and locked me up in the dungeons for a month. “I’ll tell you, but first I need to think straight.” “Okay... I’ll tell the guys the gym is off limits. Finish whatever it is you’re doing in here. I’ll wait at the bar.” I nodded once. “Thanks man.” He closed the door leaving me alone. I took a deep breath and looked around, I made a mess. I’m surprised that somehow the big windows were still intact. I took my shirt off and threw it on the floor, it was drenched in sweat. I walked to the window pressing my forearm in the window and leaning my head, I fixed my sight on the sun. I couldn’t stop thinking about Miriam. How was she feeling? Was she feeling better? I was worried about her health, but how was I supposed to ask Arthur about her state without telling him why I was asking? Maybe I could ask Cody? He would understand. Right? I helped rescue Miriam after all. I looked for Cody’s contact on my wristwatch and pressed call, I put my earplugs on and took a deep breath. He answered quickly. “Gerard. What’s up?” “Hey man. I was calling to check on Miriam. How is she doing?” “It’s a mess. Physically she’s well, but as you know Arthur f****d up, and she’s giving him hell.” I smirked, if I knew one thing about Miriam is how fiery she can be, play with her and you’ll get burned. “I guess he deserves it.” “He does, but at the same time doesn’t, it’s complicated. I was actually about to call you. Arthur has to be in Zurich tomorrow, but I don’t think he even remembers. I’m going in his place, but I would appreciate it if you had my back. Those ass-holes don’t care much for betas as you’re well aware.” “Sure, I’m in Milan. I’ll meet you there tomorrow. Email me the paperwork for me to have a look.” “Sending. Thanks. I’ll see you tomorrow.” “Bye.” She was safe and healthy, that should be enough to make me relax, only it didn’t. She would be all alone with Arthur. At least she was giving him hell. I know I shouldn’t be jealous but I couldn’t help it. He was one of my best friends, and I should be happy for him and wished him luck, but I couldn’t. Vampire's mate bond worked differently from werewolves. I was madly in love with Miriam, she was not my fated mate but the connection we had was strong, and I was willing to give her my mark and commit myself to be only hers for eternity, even give her my blood and make her immortal. Everything was going well until I asked her to marry me. It was like being staked to the heart when she said no and broke up with me. In all my years of existence never a woman messed with me as Miriam did. Fate had a twisted, f****d up way of messing with me. She was once again back in my life. I promised myself, this time I would keep my distance. Frank was my second in command he was also my sister's fated mate. Only I, Arthur and Cody knew of their bond. My dear sister was being forced into a marriage she didn't want, just like Arthur was. It made me tolerate Arthur at first the fact that he understood their bond. Eventually, we became good friends, and everything seemed to work. I took a shower and went to tell Frank everything, he needed to know what I was facing to prevent me from doing a mistake.
