Miriam
I pulled my hands away from him, getting up.
"What about the phone call? What about your famous words? 'Don't waste my time!' I would have preferred a thousand times you told me you didn't love me anymore.
Instead, you told me you would always love me. But not to waste your time because you were engaged, and I shouldn't interfere with your duties and your life."
He looked like I had just slapped him.
"Miriam, I can't tell you how s**t I felt after you hung up on me. You told me to forget you, that you didn't need me. I knew I had broken your heart. I wished I could turn back time and take back those words. I didn't mean any of it."
I shrugged my shoulders and spoke in a calm tone of voice.
"It doesn't matter now. We can't go back in time. You have your life, and I have mine. Let's just get on with this rejection!"
"Wait, please! Tell me about what you wanted to tell me all those years ago." he had tears threatening to slide down his eyes.
I laughed like a crazy person.
"You're joking, right?" I was incredulous at his request, he already knew. Why did I have to say it with all the letters?
"I'm not. Please, tell me." his eyes pleading to me.
"I was pregnant with your baby; we have a son. His name is Lucas. I never wanted him to grow up without his father. That's why I insisted on telling you in person. Only you didn't listen. So, after that call, I promised myself I would forget you ever existed and focus only on raising my baby!"
With each word, my tears fell, my chest ached, and I didn't know how I survived it all.
Sometimes my cheerful head-on exterior seemed to do an excellent job of concealing my true feelings.
He got closer, cupping both sides of my face in his hands. Wiping my tears again. As he did that small action, I burst into tears, crying uncontrollably as I remembered how it felt to be abandoned by him. How I had to tell my parents, I was pregnant.
"How did you do it? All these years you were looking after him on your own."
I answered between sobs.
"I had help from my family, and I started to work as soon as I found out I was pregnant. When he was born, I was still in my parent's house, I wanted to be independent, so I gave up university and completed my water rescue training instead. The best student had a job guaranteed, as a civilian, in the British royal navy, with housing and bills included. The only thing was I had to move to London. So I only rested when I got it. In the beginning, my aunt came with me to help me get used to living by myself. After that, it was just the two of us. The loneliness of being a single parent almost killed me!"
He hugged me against his chest, kissing the top of my head.
"Shh... don't cry, my love. I am so sorry you had to go through that alone. You're so brave. I promise you, Miriam, from now on, you and Lucas are my priority. You'll never be alone again."
I buried my face in his chest, enjoying the intimacy of our embrace. His words brought peace, but the fear of being dumped again washed over me like a bucket of ice water. I pulled away.
"It's too late for us, Arthur. This pain inside me will never heal. These unsolved feelings we have for each other, it will never be the same." He held my upper arms gently.
"My feelings for you never faltered. They're stronger than ever, Miriam, I love you. Please, forgive me..."
I looked up at his eyes, and something in me shattered. I felt such pain that I collapsed on the floor, I was dry, I was suffocating.
He quickly grabbed me before I could collide with the floor.
"Miriam! You're skin! What's wrong?! Tell me what to do."
Between gasps, I managed to point outside to the lake.
Surprise and fear gracing his expression, he watched my body convulse in horror.
Realising I was transforming, he ran out the door toward the lake.
"I got you!"
He ran into the water with me in his arms, and he submerged us both in the water. The relief I felt as the water touched my skin and scales made me shiver, and I finally released a breath I had been holding for a long time.
"Miriam...?!" Arthur's expression was of confusion, worry and fear.
I had almost entirely transformed into a siren. This was new to me.
I knew I had a hypnotic voice power because once manifested itself on a mission, which was why I was offered a position in the supernatural division. With my abilities, I couldn't be amongst humans.
Confronting my parents about it, they told me the truth.
My great-grandmother Maria was a siren who was granted permission to live an everyday life amongst humans by Poseidon himself.
My nan lived an ordinary life; she died when I was fifteen. I never knew my great-grandfather. When asking my grandmother, she said she had only met him once, and he was human as far as she knew.
I never knew I could become this form.
Looking at Arthur, "I didn't know I could transform."
"You knew you were a siren?" Felling that he contained anger, I slid from his arms and swam away from him.
"No, please, don't go. I'm sorry! I swear I'm not angry at you!"
I stopped, turning around.
"Give me time to figure out what just happened." I dived underwater, not giving him time to say anything else.
He looked crushed, as if I was leaving forever. Notstanding the pain it caused me to see him suffer that way, I returned to the surface, facing him only a few meters away.
"I'll be back."
"Be safe." I nodded, then dived again.
It was dark; the sun had already set. I swam away from where he was. I needed space from him.
I could clearly see everything as if it was daytime. The bottom of the lake was dull, with only a few fishes and some green algae. I stopped when I was far enough from everything. I could only hear myself breathing, stretching my arms forward, and observing my skin. It was light peach in colour, with a few pink strokes. I looked down, and my legs were gone.
My tail was green and lengthy, I touched my neck, expecting to find gills, but my neck was normal. My breasts were baby pink. My skin felt so soft, like velvet.
Not at all what I expected. I started laughing, covering my mouth. The sound it made was magical like an angel singing.
I tried to speak again, only to sound the same. Okay, maybe I should try to sing.
"Hello darkness my old friend,..." oh s**t, I really sounded like that. I couldn't help it and gave it another go. Although nothing could beat the original, I loved the version from Disturbed.
During my pregnancy, listening to their interpretation on repeat helped me numb the pain I felt.
"Hello darkness my old friend
I've come to talk to you again
Because a vision softly creeping
It left its seed while it was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence."
When I finished, I had goosebumps all over my skin. . Excitement took over me, and I swam faster than ever, loving my speed underwater. I felt free. I could only imagine what it would be like to go into the ocean in this form.
My aunt Linda warned me. The dream I had since I turned seventeen had a meaning. She told me the message her mother gave her was clear that if any of us in my family developed the Siren gene, we were not to dive into the deep ocean. Ever.
There was a darkness that would trap us there for eternity.
Images of my nightmares came to my mind, and I was suddenly engulfed in fear. I started swimming back to shore in the same direction I had come from. Feeling scared of the warning.
Lucas, I had to stay safe for him.
It appeared like magic when I tried to set my foot down on the ground. I could walk again, I tried breathing, and everything seemed normal.
I was naked and felt cold. I looked forward and saw Arthur sitting on the floor a few meters away from where I was. His expression was unreadable.
He got up, took off his t-shirt, and strode towards me.
I crossed my arms, trying to cover myself. At the same time, the wind shifted and I could smell his scent; he smelled like pine and sandalwood. A barbaric need for him took hold of me. I dropped my arms and started running to him; his expression was confused and hungry. I jumped and wrapped my legs around him and my arms around his neck. Crushing my lips to his.
With both hands under my backside, he held me tight against him.
We kissed, devouring each other.
He started walking, taking me back to the house.
Whatever was about to happen, I knew I was unable to stop it.
