The house felt different.
Like something invisible had shifted an inch out of place.
Manav noticed it the next morning.
Aarti was in the kitchen, sunlight pooling around her like it always did. She was on the phone with Madhu, laughing — that soft, unguarded laugh that used to spill so easily around him.
Now he realized something.
With him, her laughter had become careful.
Still warm. Still kind.
But measured.
As if she had gently pulled a part of herself back.
He leaned against the doorway and watched her without announcing his presence. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, smiled at something Madhu said, then turned — and when she saw him, the laugh softened into a polite smile.
Not distant.
Just controlled.
That tiny difference unsettled him more than any argument could have.
That night, when they were getting ready for bed, he tried again.
“Aarti.”
“Hm?”
“I meant what I said.”
“I know.”
“And?” he pressed.
She looked at him calmly.
“I don’t want you to say things because the moment demands it.”
That hit deeper than anger would have.
“I want you to say it when you’re sure,” she continued softly.
“Not because the sunlight was nice. Not because we were standing close. Not because it felt romantic.”
He swallowed.
“And until then?”
“Until then,” she said gently, “we’re okay the way we were.”
Polite.
Stable.
Safe.
That scared him.
Because now she wasn’t reaching for him anymore.
And for the first time—
He was the one wanting more.
Not because he felt calm.
Not because she was kind.
But because the idea of losing her warmth, even inch by inch, made something inside him ache in a way he hadn’t prepared for.
He closed his eyes, the realization settling slowly.
He hadn’t fallen in love with noise.
He had fallen in love with her quiet presence.
And now that she had stepped half a step back—
He finally understood how much space she had been filling in his life.
