Chapter One

735 Words
The Chase happens every year. I was nervous just like the other girls with a tinge of excitement pestering me. The males would chase us through the woods, for about 6 miles. But it’s unfair. And I’ve to come back next year. And the year after that. Until I’m twenty. The males snigger or laugh at our attempts to run away or escape and tease us. They get to see us at a pack party before the Chase. "Kassie! Hurry up!" My friend Jade yells to me, I maybe the betas daughter but Jade still bosses me around. "I'm coming!" I yell back almost tripping in my small pumps. My long brown tangles of hair cascaded down my shoulders as I randownstairs. I was wearing my favourite flowy blue dress to the ball with my mother’s golden earrings. My mum and dad were waiting at the door. "Love you sweetie!" Mum said mascara tears spilling down her cheeks. This could be the last time I'd see her. I hugged her tightly. "It's all right mum! Everyone knows no first years ever get mates!" I tried to convince her. It was true, very few first years get mates. "Okay Hun, chin up and avoid the dodgy looking ones please!!!" She said laughing and crying. "Your mum has good advice Kassidy" dad said trying not to cry. The ball and the Chase weren't too scary everyone knew that. Besides if I do get chased it will be Mason after me! "You two think too much! No one’s going to Chase me and if they do, they will eat my dust!" I exaggerated. "Stick with Jade, ok?" Mum began again. "I will, if I get Chased it will probably be Mason anyways so no worries!" "Love you Hun" mum said crying. "love you too mum" I said hugging her and almost crying myself. "Bye darling" dad sadly said. "Bye dad, better go before Jade combusts" I laughed. With that I opened the door and slammed it with a bang. Jade wasn't there. "Jade?!" I shouted. "BOO!!!" Jade shouted. " Oh, my freaking god don't do that again!" I said elbowing her side. She was wearing a tight fitted green dress with emerald green heels. She caught me staring. "What? I dress to impress!" She chuckled. The taxi pulled up as I saw my parents waving from the window. I felt sad. But Jade was already pulling me into the taxi. "Come on miss Emotional!" Jade buckled my seat belt up and smiled. The car ride lasted for ever until we arrived at the Alpha's house. The ball. I felt nervous but confident as I walked up to the door, Jade following close behind. When I opened the door, I saw buffet tables and hundreds of people drinking and dancing. "Wow!" I said in awe. Jade looked just as shocked but took my arm and said: "Come on let's dance!" Jade and I danced for a while but after I had enough I sat down at the bar quickly chugging down a few drinks. I noticed Mason was walking towards me. "Hey Mason!" I waved wildly at him. "Hey Kass, you alright?" Mason asked concerned. "Why wouldn't I be" I said. "Alpha Carl's son Jason is picking a mate this year"Mason said worried. I gulped Jason was worse than his father a monster the worst wolf in the world. "He won't get me anyway, I put berry wiring scent on me" I whispered. "Are you kidding me Kass you could get killed for that" Mason nearly yelled. Berry wiring is a substance that makes your scent unrecognisable. It is illegal in the Chase. "Don't worry! When the Chase happens follow the Berry scent." I whispered mischievously. I pulled him closer to me. "You shouldn't do that you know, remember the rules?"He said quietly. "Rules, rules, rules, blah blah blah!" I said rather tipsy. "Are you drunk?" He asked anxious. "No.......yes" I giggled. "I'm taking you back to your room, so you can calm down, we can come back for Alpha Carl's speech." I remember getting my room key when I entered. "Okay" I said. I stumbled up the stairs with Mason holding my hand. When I got to my room, I handed Mason the key and laid down on my bed and passed out my hair sprawled out across the duvet.
