Kathleen Remes’ POV
I don’t know what time it was or what day it was. I have the best days of my life right now, in Greece when Kai showed me all the necessities for him to be satisfied as well as I was.
I tossed and turned as I smiled at last night’s event when he showed me to be more proactive in the art of lovemaking. I could sense that sunlight had entered our bedroom and when I opened my eyes, Kai’s sea-green orbs were looking at me like he was smirking.
“What?” I asked as I turned around to play with his chest under my touch. I know that he liked that.
“Nothing,” he said as he played with my hair. I was smiling as I felt content with the way that he showered me with his attention. I might not be called love just yet. Who knows?
“So, what are we going to do today? It’s been a few days since we went out. All we do is—“ I said before he put his finger on my lips to stop talking.
“Well, if you have any complaints, then I must make up for it,” he said as he dipped his head to claim my mouth. I smiled before something disturbed us. My phone rang. I broke our kiss before looking at the phone on the coffee table.
“I should get that,” I said as I stopped Kai and his advance.
“Maybe it’s not that important,” he said, and I was about to give in before it rang again.
“Fine, just make it quick,” he said as he got out of my way and I went to the coffee table to get my phone. I walked out naked from under the sheets as I could sense Kai was watching my every move.
“You better get here quickly or I will take you right there,” he said as I was bending to get the phone. I looked at the number and it was my father’s. All the blood drained from my face. I picked it up as quickly as I could.
“Hello?” I asked on the phone and all I heard was sobbing. I can guess what happened before my father explained it to me.
“Kathleen, I’m sorry to disturb you on your honeymoon but you need to come home, now,” he said, his voice was wavering. I gulped before I cleared my throat to speak.
“Yes, father,” I replied as I ended the line and I went to look at Kai, who was shocked to see my facial expression.
“What’s wrong?” He asked before he went to my side and I hugged him there.
We were in haste as we went out to check out of the hotel. We still had a few days left, but Kai asked to be refunded for the unused days. We went to the airport and all I could pray was that nothing bad happened. I don’t know if anything happened to my mother. Kai took my hands and kissed my knuckles.
“Everything will be alright,” he said as we boarded the plane and we were off to go to Finland as quickly as possible. When we arrived at the airport hangar in Helsinki, I was distressed and I didn’t want to talk to anyone.
“Milady,” John greeted me as I was getting off the plane with Kai.
“Master,” he acknowledged Kai now. Kai nodded at him.
“I want you to take our luggage back to the Summer Estate but Kai and I will be going to my father’s castle this minute,” I said as I was getting to the private car that was waiting for us.
“Of course, milady,” he said as he bowed at me and Kai. We then got inside the car and the driver drove off from the airport and went to the castle. The whole journey, Kai has been a supportive partner for me. He would caress me, kiss my forehead and calm my nerves, as I wouldn’t know what I would do if I were alone.
“Shh, it’s okay. Everything will be alright,” he said as we were in front of the gate to get inside the castle. The head butler, Mr. Lore, opened the door and I ran toward my parent’s chamber and the scene was horrifying for me to admit. Kai was right behind me and right there, I succumbed to my emotion.
My mother was on her deathbed.
Kai Virtanen’s POV
Kathleen’s face was something that I could read at that moment. She did not smile nor cry. I don’t know what she was thinking. We were carrying the coffin of her mother as we put it inside the church for the people to see her for the last time. Katherine, nonetheless, devastated as the coffin was put down. Chris couldn't make it when he had to be out of the country because of a business deal.
After I put the coffin down, Katherine came to me and hugged me. I hugged her back so as to be supportive on behalf of Chris. I looked at Kathleen and she was staring at me but her emotions were hard to read. I just did what my brother-in-law would do.
“Shh, it’s alright,” I whispered as Katherine was hugging me tightly and I saw Kathleen was leaving me when everyone was done.
We rode in a car in silence as Kathleen was looking outside the window. I was looking at her but considering the gesture that she just made, she did not want to talk to anyone, including me. I looked ahead to being at the Royal Castle.
“My dear,” the king greeted us as we got out of the car. We were heading to mourning as there were people from around the world that were connected to the family to send their condolences and visiting to support the royal family.
“Kai, my boy,” a voice interrupted me when I was looking around as Kathleen was greeting some of her friends. I turned around to look at my grandfather who was standing behind me.
“Hello, Grandpa,” I said as I hugged him. He patted me on my back as he looked at me.
“I’m sorry for the loss,” he said as I nodded at him.
“Well, I don’t know my mother-in-law that much but I fear that my wife is feeling devastated by the news,” I said as I looked at Kathleen. She bowed to some people before she headed elsewhere.
“Ah, yes. Kathleen was known to be with her mother when she was little and they were inseparable. But, what we can do is, death does not know age or name. It will come when it is time,” my grandpa said as he patted my shoulder.
“Go to her. She needs you the most right now,” he said as I nodded at him before excusing myself to see Kathleen. I saw her going up to the rooftop and I went there as well. As I opened the door to the rooftop, Kathleen was staring at the night horizon with a champagne glass in her hands.
“Kathleen, I’ve been looking all over for you,” I said as she turned around to look at me. Her eyes were red and I knew that she must just cry when she got up there. It was a cold night so I offered her my jacket as she just had her dress on without any coat.
“Thank you,” she whispered as she took it and our hands touched. It ignited the fire of passion in my blood.
“I’m sorry. I heard that you were close with your mother,” I said as I stood beside her. I didn’t dare to hug her as she was not that fond of skin-skin, except when it came to s****l intercourse.
“Don’t worry. It’s her time. She was happy to see that I was married. My father told me it was her dying wish,” she said as she took a sip of the champagne. I did the same as we just had, standing there in silence.
“Perhaps you should go to my sister. She needed someone to be by her side as Chris was away on business,” she said stoically, and it angered me.
“I don’t want to be by her side right now,” I said as I looked at the horizon. Kathleen turned sharply at me as she stared at me.
“But you must! If you show that you can be empathetic to her, she will consider being yours—“ I cut her off.
“I don’t need another woman right now. I just want to be by your side. I know you keep strong, but I know deep down inside you are struggling, and don’t know who to turn to. I am your husband, so I will be by your side when you are in your darkest hour, Kathleen. Damn it!” I said, as I couldn't control my anger any more at her. She was so determined to get me to Katherine that she pushed me away.
“If you don’t like me that much, why bother to marry me at all?” I shouted before I walked out of there. I was stopped by someone who hugged me from the back.
“Don’t go. I’m sorry. I don’t mean that part. Please stay with me, my love,” Kathleen said as she was hugging me. I could sense that she was hugging me tightly as she did not want me to go.
“Which part?” I asked her.
“To go to my sister’s side. I don’t like it when you do that,” she said, and I smiled at her honesty.
“Well, what are you going to do about it? To keep me at your side?” I asked as I was teasing her. She sighed. She turned me around to look at me as our eyes were looking into each other’s souls.
“Maybe this,” she said, and she kissed me. I kissed her back but broke up so quickly because she was mourning for her mother. I need to respect that.
“Shh, it’s okay. I’m here,” I said as Kathleen was sobbing in my arms, finally before the day ended.
Unknown’s POV
“Well, I think it's safe to say that our plan was working, gentlemen, and the next one was the king himself,” I said as I looked at my benefactors. They were all laughing and I could sense that they would be satisfied with the next plan that I had in store for the royal family.
“Cheers!” I said and they all cheered as well. Today was a new beginning and I will make sure that the royalty will pay for their old wounds.
