CHAPTER 9 JACE’S POV I watched Emily leave my office, her curvy hips swaying as she walked out, closing the door with a loud bang. My fingers ran through my hair in exhaustion. I knew this would happen one day and I thought that by then I’d be ready to tell and face her when that day came, but now I have no idea what to say or even do. She clearly misunderstood me. I took two steps forward, wanting to rush over and grab her to explain myself, but I stopped by the door, my gaze boring into it like it was Emily herself. If I were to rush over to her now, what would I say… after all, she was right before me a while ago but I couldn’t even bring myself to come up with a reasonable explanation. I ended up pacing around my office for a complete thirty minutes, with sighs leaving my throat every ticking second. I sat back in my chair, leaning backwards, my hands on my face as I let out a muffled sound, and then I picked up a file, deciding to distract myself with something. It took me long enough to realize that I was still on the same page I started off from. Matter of fact, I had been reading the same line over and over again. I couldn’t get her off my mind. Her eyes, which held disappointment, kept replaying in my head, including her last words before she walked out the door. I let the file slip away from my hands, falling from my fingers with a light thud. Leaning against my chair, my hair fell backwards. All I could do now was stare at the ceiling. The clean white marble stared back at me. “What do I do?” I said to myself as I leaned forward to drink my coffee, which I ended up pouring out due to disgust. It had already gone cold, already losing its sweet fragrance and taste. I picked up the company’s phone, dialing my assistant’s number. “How can I help you, sir?” His voice came in contact with my eardrums, pulling me out of my trance. He must’ve answered a few seconds ago, but I wasn’t able to notice with how lost in thought I was. With the strange silence, he was obviously expecting to hear me speak first, but since I hadn’t spoken, he decided to wait. “Come to my office,” I replied shortly as I dropped the phone after connecting the call. A few seconds later, I heard a knock on the door. “Come in,” I order softly. I picked up the same file I had been reading for hours, pretending as if I was reading. Hearing his footsteps come to a stop, I dropped the file as I raised my head to stare at him. “Sir,” he muttered in a very professional tone. I tore my gaze away from him as I continued to stare at the file in my hands. After a few minutes, I pushed the remaining files towards him while placing the one in my hands on top. “Send it to Miss Blake’s office. Ask her to make the necessary adjustment the files need and submit them back to me today,” I told him as I stood up from my chair to stare out the window. “But sir—” I heard his voice trail from behind. “Yes?” I answered, my voice a bit cold, turning to stare at him slowly. “Isn’t this supposed to be my job?” he asked, or should I say, he reminded. Breathing out a heavy sigh, I stared at him dumbly. “Yes sir, I’d send this to Miss Blake immediately,” he said as he rushed out, closing the door behind him. I felt frustration and guilt rushing down my spine all at once. “Emily,” her name came out of my mouth as a sigh as I stared back at the bustling streets. Even after making such a decision, I had no idea what I was going to say when she finally arrived. A knock came as the door opened. After turning my eyes, “I had—” my eyes went wide as I looked at who stood before me. It was my assistant. He walked slowly. “Miss Blake was said to have gone back home,” he said without waiting for me to ask. “Home?” I repeated shortly. What was I expecting anyway? I knew she was still in her office; she obviously didn’t want to see me. I stood in silence for a while before waving my hand at him to leave. “Sir, I could help—” “Leave.” My voice sounded immediately, cutting his words off. I watched him bow slightly as he left in embarrassment and fear. I grunted, punching my hand on the table in anger, the contents on the table bouncing at the effect of the force I had exerted. “Why won’t she understand me?” I blurted out as I walked back to my chair. ‘What next?’ The words kept ringing through my head like a song. Her face and voice kept replaying in my head. At the end of the day, I could only sigh, staring once again at the window. I picked up my phone as I stared at the number in front of me. It was Emily’s. “No,” I said to myself. I didn’t want to look desperate, so I just tossed my phone back into my pocket, took my jacket from the hanger, and walked out of my office. My assistant stood up immediately as he heard the sound of my door opening, his eyes falling on the files in my hand. “Here, finish up with this immediately and drop it at my desk first thing tomorrow morning. I’m off,” I said as I handed the files to him. “Yes sir, see you tomorrow, sir,” he replied immediately as he smiled in response. I gave him a short nod as I walked away. Where am I going? I had no idea, but all I needed right now was to cool my head, and staying in this office will certainly not help. Where could I possibly cool my head? A bar wouldn’t be a bad idea.
