Chapter 9 – Unnecessary reminders

1076 Words
Finally finding myself walking hand in hand with Caleb out of the pack house that I had called home for my entire life, it was time for us to go. Time to start my new life. So far this week… Finding Caleb… Well… It had been the best damn time of my life. Never leaving my side, he almost appeared like the ideal mate. He acted like it too. Strong, powerful, intimate, knowledgeable… Squeezing my hand firmly, Caleb walked me slowly to where my parents were standing near the pack house. My dad as stern and tired looking as ever, I could not even read my mother. Always torn between duty to the pack and dad, it left her unable to protect or advocate for me. My father speaking up first, his eyes did not waver for even the slightest of moments. “Remember Sophie, this is done now. If this does not work out for you… Do not even think about coming back, you are no longer welcome here. You are no daughter of mine, and no member of this pack.” My heart cracking, the pain of his words tore through me like an earthquake. I knew this would be the case, and I knew there was no turning back after I made that choice. But hearing it from his lips, it was all the worse. My mother, loyal to the end kept her tears at bay as her eyes remained on the floor along with her words. Silent and obedient forever to my father, no matter the cost… even if that cost was me. Caleb’s arm slinging around my shoulders, he scoffed loudly at the exchange. Or more accurately dictation from my father. Caleb’s words easily audible, my father would never dare challenge him even if offended, “disgraceful excuse for a pack, let alone parents. I’ll make sure you daughter is treated as a proper Luna should. Continue helping that boy run your pack into the ground, I’m sure despite your actions and words, my mate would accept you once you are left on the streets.” Watching my father struggle, his body shuffled on the spot as he took my mother by the wrist dragging her back inside. My insides hurting, I tried not to react in any way. Staying attached to Caleb’s side for support, I was used to staying silent, used to taking it. What I was not used too, was a partner who stood beside me taking my side and provoking others while boosting me. Caleb turning us away from my parents following the path toward the road, waiting next was Ethan and Kate. Never seeing Ethan waving anyone off, I usually had that privilege alone. Almost envious of Kate, Ethan stood by her side watching and waiting for our parting words. She had him so wound around her little finger, nobody gave her the credit she deserved for it. Able to get him further in a few days than I could in years, maybe my leaving would be a good thing for the pack... A turning point. Shaking with each step we took forward, my heart was not recovering in the slightest pumping harder. Caleb’s arms and body growing close still, he held me in place as if absorbing every tremble. My eyes catching on Ethan’s, I watched him lower his head to Kates ear whispering to her. Whatever the conversation, I could see her features darkening as her eyes lifted fixating on me before she turned toward the pack house walking away. Approaching Ethan, Caleb lightly rumbled in his chest in warning. “Keep your eyes off my mate Alpha, or I may retract my generous offer.” A slight smirk playing on Ethan’s lips, I watched as his eyes averted from my own to meet Caleb’s. “You are right Alpha Grayson, why look at her face when I have had the rest. I should know what she looks like by now.” An air of amusement in his tone, I felt Caleb stiffen at my side. I did not know what Caleb had agreed upon with Ethan, but even if they were no longer my pack. I still cared for, and wanted them protected. Pulling Caleb past Ethan, I did not say a single parting word as we walked on. Calling after us, Ethan was doing his best to stir trouble no doubt, but his tone was completely honest and sincere, “Sophie.” Pausing for the briefest of moments, I did not bother to turn back as Ethan words were left to hang between us, “I will always take you back. Do not forget that this is your home.” Caleb’s fingers biting into my skin, I felt him drop his arm from my body to once again take my hand. With some strength, Caleb pulled me with haste to the waiting vehicles. Taking one last glance back, I overlooked Ethan seeing Alex just watching by himself from the pack house door. My only friend, Alex was my only regret. Having to leave him behind, hopefully with me gone his life too would become easier. No longer trying to hide and comfort me when in a hopeless and endless cycle of pain, he would be able to focus, be able to do his job. Ushered toward one of the cars with a new sense of purpose, Caleb’s aggression was building steadily. A man opening the door for Caleb and myself, I moved in first without hesitation knowing he needed to leave asap. Taking my seat, Caleb slid in behind me as his jaw repeatedly flexed like his fists. Closing the sliding window to the front of the car, Caleb slammed the door shut behind him. Sitting in the tense silence with just the two of us, I felt a little unsettled. Surely Caleb could not be that angered. He would have been used too, and prepared for and few less than desirable words, and surely he would know by now that a few words would not sway my decision. Or maybe it was hearing that Ethan had taken my body, knowing and hearing, other people hearing were two very different things.
