Amanda could feel her heart beat against her chest as the car sped through the night.
“This can't be happening,” she thought to herself.
Her sister is all she has. She can't lose her. Having a second chance with her sister was the best thing that has ever happened to her. Finally, she can make things right.
When the car stopped, she and Jayden both rushed into the busy hospital despite the hour of the day.
Conveniently, Amanda bumps into Jennifer's doctor. She was so out of breath that she could barely muster any words out of her mouth.
“Doctor! My sister!” she managed to say through large, sharp breaths.
“Your sister is fine. She just regained consciousness,” the doctor explained. Amanda felt a huge weight lift off her shoulders. She couldn't help but sigh in relief.
“But what happened?” Jayden, who was still by her side, asked.
“She had a little accident. She was trying to get out of bed, and she fell and hit her head. She was unconscious for a while. But now she's stable and awake,” the doctor explained.
Amanda couldn't help but feel grateful to hear that. She couldn't even imagine what life would be like if she had lost her sister yet again. Would all this even be worth it?
“Can I see her?” she asked hesitantly.
“Yes, of course.” Hearing that from the doctor, she hurried to her sister’s room. She found her sister peacefully resting on her bed with a book in her hands—a magazine rather—flipping through its content.
“Jenny, how are you feeling?” Amanda quickly sat by her side, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.
Jennifer simply looked up, unbothered. To her, hospital life was almost normal. Spending months and months in this place, nothing was scary to her. At least she's still alive. That was an achievement in itself.
“I'm fine,” she simply said. Her brows furrowed as her eyes landed on Jayden, who was silently standing by the door. “What's he doing here?”
She couldn’t hide her disapproval.
“He was just helping. He's the one who gave me a ride to the hospital,” Amanda tried to explain.
“Thanks,” Jennifer muttered as she eyed him up and down. Jennifer was not a fan of Jayden, but Amanda understood it was all because of the bad things she had said about him. Jennifer had always been so protective of her sister, even though she was the younger one.
“You are welcome. I'll leave you two. I have to go,” he explained, not wanting to intrude further.
Amanda understood. After all, sometimes good things take time.
She stood and met him at the door.
“Thank you. Tonight was fun,” she said, giving him a quick hug. He nodded with a small smile escaping his lips. And with that, he left the hospital.
Amanda felt a little sad it had to end like that. Now only his scent lingered, with a memory of what could have been.
But at this moment, her sister was more important. Her health comes first. And now she has to make sure that she gets her heart transplant as soon as possible.
“Since when are you friends? You were beefing about him just a few days ago,” Jennifer finally asked when they were alone. “Don't tell me you are considering marrying him just so you can pay for the surgery.”
“No, I'm not going to marry him for the surgery, relax. We met at the gala today, and we talked. He's really nice,” Amanda explained to her sister, who still looked at her, confused.
“I'm the one who hit my head, but it feels like you are the one suffering the effects. Are you okay?” Jennifer was confused. She touched her sister’s forehead just to make sure everything was still fine.
“Stop it, I'm fine,” Amanda chuckled, brushing her hand off. “Now scoot over. What are you looking at?” She nestled by her sister's side, picking up the magazine.
“If you say so,” Jennifer replied, resting on her sister's chest.
These were the moments Amanda took for granted in her past life. But now she has a chance to cherish every one of them. She can be grateful that she still has someone who loves her unconditionally.
In the past, she focused her energy on all the wrong people and pushed away the only ones who truly cared about her. Even when she had time to spend with her sister, all she would talk about was Robert. Now she sees how stupid all that was.
“Well, I was just thinking the LSG really needs new fashion designers. It's really boring. Where's the flair and innovation?” Jennifer paged through the magazine. Even the lesser brands still looked more innovative compared to LSG.
“You think?” Amanda mused, studying the contents.
“Yeah. They would definitely benefit from a style like yours,” Jennifer said with a smile.
Amanda agreed. LSG has really lost its touch. At this point, they were only just a name—a name that would soon be forgotten.
“Well, maybe the models are not that good at selling a product,” Amanda argued, teasing her sister.
Amanda had always been an aspiring designer, while Jennifer wanted to be the model. The two of them were like the perfect duo. Amanda would design, and Jennifer would model them. Before their grandmother died, she really supported their dreams. She even left her inheritance to help them with college.
But Amanda gave up her dream because of Robert. She gave all of her last remaining inheritance to him so he could finish college. And for what?
“Well, they could use a bit of work. But there's no good modeling that can save this disaster they call fashion,” Jennifer joked. They both laughed just like old times, like the two inseparable best friends they once were.
The night was a blur, filled with laughter and friendly sisterly squabbles.
In the morning, Amanda prepared to leave and go back to her apartment. After all this, she could use a good bath.
“Are you leaving?” Jennifer pouted. Memories of the past night still lingered. It's been a while since they’ve had bonding time as sisters. Even when Amanda visited, it was all about Robert.
“Yeah. But I promise I'll come back to visit. I really enjoyed spending time with you last night,” Amanda promised, hugging her sister.
“Me too. It's been a while since we had some sister time. I wish we could do this often.”
“As often as you would like. I'm always here for you. And I love you so much, even when you are annoying sometimes,” she said to her. And she meant every word about it. She will not waste this opportunity again.
“I love you too. And you are the annoying one,” Jennifer teased with a soft chuckle. “But is everything between you and Robert still fine? You didn’t mention him the whole night. And you hugged another man,” her sister couldn't hide her curiosity any longer.
“Can't I spend time with my little sis without mentioning Robert?” Amanda questioned with an eyebrow raised. Jennifer lifted her hands in surrender, not questioning her sister any further. After all, she was thankful that she could still enjoy some time with her sister.
“I'll see you soon,” Amanda gave her sister a peck on the forehead.
She left the hospital and headed to her apartment. But the shock waiting for her, she was not ready for.
“Amanda, you are back?” Her landlord, Julie, met her at the door with panic on her face.
“What happened?” Amanda stepped inside to see her upside-down apartment, things broken and tossed aside.
“There was a break-in. The place was robbed,” Julie told her.
Amanda could barely believe it. But the state of her apartment was undeniable proof. Who would do this? And what were they looking for?
