I spun around terrified that the bullies had come back for revenge, but to my relief, the boys weren't anywhere even remotely close to me. Apparently, they hadn’t even bothered running after me, I could still see their silhouettes from a distance. To my surprise, the voice from behind me turned out to be Mabelle.
“I-I-I d-didn’t m-m-mean to-” I began to stammer but Mabelle interrupted me.
“Well, whatever you did was awesome!”
She squealed.
“Huh?” I said, feeling completely baffled.
I was now more puzzled than ever. Why is Mabelle praising me? I thought while Mabelle kept ongoing.
“They thought that they could pick on you because you're shy. Well, you sure showed them!
Next time they’ll be the ones to think twice before messing with my new best friend!” Mabelle went on.
Best Friend. The word seemed to play on a loop inside my head. I’d never had a friend before, let alone a best friend.
“I believe this is yours,” I said as I smiled at Mabelle and handed over her bracelet.
“My Bracelet! You actually got it back from those meanies?! Thank you!”
Mabelle said in a delighted voice, flailing her arms around me giving me the biggest hug I’d ever received.
