The academy had fallen into an uneasy quiet after the council meeting. Repairs on the eastern wall continued around the clock, the sound of hammers and rune-carving echoing across the grounds like a constant reminder that safety was fragile. Students moved in tighter groups, glances darting toward the tree line. Whispers about the Silent Healer had spread despite the council’s orders, turning Elara into both a beacon of hope and a target of suspicion.
Elara and Kai slipped away that night under the cover of darkness, heading to the same secluded clearing deep in the pines where their private training had begun. The full moon had waned slightly, but its silver light still bathed the forest in an ethereal glow. The air smelled of pine resin and distant smoke from the repairs.
Kai arrived first, his broad shoulders tense as he scanned the surroundings. When Elara stepped into the clearing, he turned, and the mate bond flared warmly between them. He crossed the distance in three long strides and pulled her into his arms without a word.
For several heartbeats, they simply held each other. No training. No testing powers. Just the solid warmth of his body against hers and the steady rhythm of his heartbeat under her cheek.
“I needed this,” Kai murmured into her hair, his voice rough with exhaustion and relief. “Just you. No council watching. No rogues howling.”
Elara nodded against his chest and signed slowly against his back: So did I. The bond… it makes everything louder. I can feel you even when we’re apart now.
Kai pulled back just enough to look down at her, his storm-gray eyes soft with gold flecks in the moonlight. “Good. Because I’ve been fighting the urge to come find you every hour.” His large hand cupped her face, thumb tracing her lower lip. “You’re healing faster than anyone expected, but it’s costing you. I can feel the drain through the bond.”
She signed: It’s getting easier when you’re close. Like you’re feeding the power.
A low growl of satisfaction rumbled in his chest. “Then stay close tonight.”
They moved to the center of the clearing and began with light sparring—more to burn off tension than to test limits. Their bodies moved in familiar rhythm, but every touch lingered longer than necessary. A hand on her waist during a spin. Fingers brushing her arm when blocking a strike. Each contact sent sparks racing through the mate bond.
Eventually, they stopped pretending it was only training.
Kai caught her wrist mid-strike and pulled her against him, her back to his chest. His arms wrapped around her from behind, one hand splayed possessively over her stomach. “Enough fighting,” he whispered against her ear, breath hot. “Let me hold you.”
Elara melted into him, tilting her head back against his shoulder. She signed over his forearm: The council would lose their minds if they saw us like this.
“Let them,” Kai said, voice darkening. “I resigned myself to a lonely life after my pack was destroyed. I trained others so they wouldn’t suffer the same fate. But you…” He turned her in his arms so they faced each other. “You walked into my classroom and shattered every wall I built. Your silence speaks louder than any howl I’ve ever heard.”
Elara’s hands rose between them, fingers tracing the scar along his jaw with gentle reverence. She signed: I thought no alpha would ever want someone who can’t speak. Someone cursed.
Kai caught her hand and pressed a kiss to her palm, then to the inside of her wrist. “Your curse is breaking because of you. Because of us.” His eyes burned with gold. “And I want every part of you—the silent fighter, the powerful healer, the woman who looks at me like I’m worth saving.”
The mate bond surged, flooding them both with shared emotion. Elara felt his loneliness easing, his guilt over his lost pack softening in her presence. In return, Kai felt her deep-seated fear of being unwanted dissolve under his touch.
He lowered his head slowly, giving her time to pull away. When she didn’t, their lips met in a kiss that started tender and quickly deepened into something hungry and desperate. Kai’s hand tangled in her dark braid, tilting her head for better access. Elara rose onto her toes, fingers clutching his shirt as the bond blazed brighter between them.
The kiss tasted of moonlight, pine, and years of unspoken longing. When they finally broke apart, both were breathing hard.
Kai rested his forehead against hers. “That was long overdue,” he said hoarsely.
Elara smiled softly and signed against his chest: I’ve wanted that since the first time you corrected my stance in combat class.
A rare, genuine chuckle escaped him—the sound warm and low. “I nearly lost control that day. Your silence drove me crazy in the best way.”
They sank down onto the soft grass, backs against a large pine tree. Kai pulled her into his lap, wrapping his arms around her as if he could shield her from the entire world. For a while, they simply talked through signs and his spoken words, sharing pieces of their pasts.
She told him about the night her pack was attacked, the curse that stole her voice, and the lonely years that followed. He spoke of the m******e of his own pack, the guilt that still haunted him, and how he had thrown himself into training the next generation to atone.
Through the bond, words weren’t always necessary. Emotions flowed freely—comfort, understanding, growing affection.
At one point, Elara placed her hands on his chest again, letting a gentle pulse of silver light flow into him. The old scar near his heart lightened further, and some of the constant ache he carried eased.
Kai inhaled sharply, eyes closing. “You’re healing more than wounds,” he whispered. “You’re healing me.”
The moment was intimate and perfect—until a distant sound shattered it.
A twig snapped at the edge of the clearing.
Kai was on his feet in an instant, pushing Elara behind him protectively, claws partially extended. His body coiled like a predator ready to strike.
Jax stepped out from the tree line, eyes narrowed, a mocking smile on his face. “Well, well. The alpha and the mute healer. Training looks… intimate tonight.”
Kai’s aura flared with alpha power, forcing Jax to take an involuntary step back. “You’re trespassing on private training grounds. Leave. Now.”
Jax raised his hands in mock surrender, but his gaze lingered on Elara with a mix of jealousy and calculation. “Just making sure our precious Silent Healer is safe. The whole academy is talking about her glowing hands and how closely the great Alpha Thorn is ‘protecting’ her.” He smirked. “Careful, Thorn. Some might call this inappropriate. Student and instructor…”
Kai growled low and dangerous. “If you breathe a word of what you saw, I will personally ensure you regret it.”
Jax backed away slowly, but the damage was done. “Relax. Your secret’s safe… for now.” He disappeared back into the trees, leaving tension thick in the air.
Elara stepped out from behind Kai, signing quickly: He’ll use this against us.
Kai pulled her back into his arms, holding her tightly. “Let him try. I’m done hiding how I feel about you.” He tilted her chin up, eyes blazing. “But we need to be smarter. The bond is still new. We complete it when it’s safe—when Varak is no longer a threat and the council can’t use it against you.”
They stayed in the clearing a while longer, stealing a few more tender kisses and quiet moments, but the interruption had reminded them both of the dangers closing in.
As they walked back toward the dorms under the cover of shadows, Kai’s hand brushed hers one last time. “Tomorrow night,” he promised. “We continue. Both the training and… this.”
Elara nodded, heart full despite the looming threats.
For the first time in her life, she didn’t feel like an outcast.
She felt wanted. Protected. Desired.
But as she slipped into her dormitory, a new worry settled in her chest.
Jax’s knowing smirk haunted her.
And somewhere in the forest, Varak’s army continued to grow, drawn by the scent of the Silent Healer whose powers were only beginning to bloom.
The stolen moments between her and Kai were beautiful.
But they were also dangerously fragile.
