Jack was going to throw up. He knew what they were asking of Pilar, and he just stood there. He didn’t tell her no because he knew what was at stake. He couldn’t tell her yes either, because he knew what was at stake. There was no answer.
“You wouldn’t be in any danger,” Dunn told her.
Jack almost laughed. They all knew exactly who Carlos was. Even if they hadn’t been working on this case for months, they had time to dig into who he was. But they had been on the case for months, and they knew. They knew everything about Carlos and what he’d done, both proven and rumor. And they knew Pilar would be in danger if she went anywhere near him.
Pilar gave him a smile, but one that didn’t reach her eyes. They were dark and sad. “I’m always in danger. There’s no way to stop it.”
