CHAPTER 13: REMEMBER YOU
IT IS inevitable to remove the smile from Eisen's lips as he carefully watched the girl whose cheeks flushed red after he found out from her lips that she was peeking at him whenever he's unconscious or in a deep sleep.
Jade turned into a tomato as if something is burning inside of her. And Eisen can't help but smile because of how Jade's body reacted; now, he can't help but enjoy the view. She looked so adorable, and Eisen wants to pinch her cheeks!
"Because you're blushing wife... And you look so adorable whenever you blush." and when Eisen said those words to the woman in front of him, he couldn't point out what is the woman's initial reaction. Is she mad or worst? Is she happy or more than that?
Eisen absentmindedly extended both of her arms to touch the woman's cheeks, causing Jade to freeze to where she's standing. He pinched her cheeks as light as he could, but Jade complained, stopping him from touching her. "Eisen, it hurts! Just let me go now, or I swear I'm going to kill you if you don't stop now!"
But instead of releasing Jade from his grip, Eisen lightly brushed his thumbs against her skin, easing the pain he put pressure on, making sure that Jade's cheeks turn to normal. But he noticed that something is odd with Jade when she turned pale.
"What's wrong?" Eisen is worried because of her sudden changes, but at the same time, he wanted to laugh at her expression because Jade seemed uneasy.
Jade avoided eye contact with him, a sign that he's avoiding him. But why? Is Jade still mad at him? Or did he made the woman worry so much about him? If Eisen knew that Jade would act like this, he could've refrained himself from irritating her.
Jade pushed Eisen's hands away from her face as she took a deep breath before facing him with crossed arms,
"What are you doing here? You could've informed me that you wanted to come out," instead of hearing Jade's word full of havoc, Eisen was stunned when he listened to her concerned voice brushing his ears into at ease. Jade sure sounds concerned, but Eisen can't help but wonder about it. He and his brother made her mad earlier but now, did Jade forgave them already?
"I want some fresh air. Besides, I can't sleep," Eisen wanted some fresh air to replenish his mind and body. And one more thing, it's just as lovely to watch the ocean at night when the stars are twinkling high up above, looking down at him.
"Really? Aren't you scared that there will be monsters at night to eat you alive? Or there are other people around the place and wanted to abduct you without me knowing? And it's already late. You could've brought a jacket with you since it's getting chilly outside?" he couldn't help but smile as he heard the maiden's sermon—or preach, to be exact.
"Are you still mad at me?" Eisen wanted to make sure that Jade is not mad at him anymore.
"I'm not mad at you. I'm happy that you're irritating me if that is what you wanted to hear." Jade commented while still standing next to him, not bothered by the breeze and how numb her feet were for running around the place to look for Eisen. "Anyway, what are you writing? You seemed focused and busy before I came here. Did I disturb you?"
"Oh, this?" Eisen raised his hand as he showed the paper he's been holding for a while now. "This is nothing,"
"Oh, don't you dare lie to me. I saw you were writing before I arrived, so spare me your lies and enlighten me with the truth," Jade answered and was about to snatch the paper away from Eisen when he moved his hand away from Jade's reach, making her look at him with boredom.
"You know that I can do anything just to get that paper, right?"
"And I know that you won't force me to give it to you, right?" Jade pouted at his remarks, making her stand up properly, and crossed her arms as she avoided eye contact with the man.
"Fine! You could at least read the content for me to know if you don't want me to read it." She replied, still disappointed for not snatching the paper away from Eisen's grip. Eisen smiled and then spoke after a couple of seconds of being silent,
"If I read it to you, will you still be mad at me?" after asking the question, Jade faced Eisen but immediately diverted her attention away,
"It depends on the content. If you were writing about me and you are bad-mouthing or describing me poorly, then I won't be mad at you but might kill you myself,"
"Sounds fair," silence conquered their surrounding after that, but Eisen ended up looking at Jade and called out her attention for the millionth time already.
"Why don't you sit here first," he commanded as he tapped the chair beside him. "And then I'll read the content to you? But make sure to not laugh at me because this is my first time writing my thoughts out, and I'm not sure if it will interest you at all,"
Jade did not say a word as she slowly sat next to him. Jade may not say it, but she's delighted that Eisen wanted to read the content to her. They were both staring at the ocean that now seemed to glow because of the moonlight.
"The sky reflects the ocean. And the ocean almost looked like the sky," he stated as he looked into the paper, he was holding before darting his attention towards the ocean. "They were like two parallel worlds. Aren't you curious as to why? Questions are revolving around but what caught my attention is how the sky and the ocean became a wonder to me,"
"Are you telling me the content of your writing? Or were you simply trying to ask me a question?" Jade answered as their eyes didn't leave the glittering ocean.
"Shh! I'm trying to read this to you, and I need to feel it, okay?"
"Okay, I'm sorry. Please continue,"
Eisen cleared his throat as he read the story he wrote, "The sky was the world of peace. It was the world where perfections. While the ocean that reflects it became the world of chaos, brokenness, and uncertainty. In the sky, you can see the paradise that makes everyone happy, granting their lives with perfection and eternity. They were beautiful in any way that nothing could even destroy it." he began as Jade listened.
"And how about the ocean?" she asked when Eisen made a sudden pause in his story.
"The ocean became a place where broken stayed. They are not allowed to go to the sky," he answered as he took a glance towards her.
"Why?"
"Because they were thrown for a reason—a reason that will help them change and be the person they need to be. You see, the ocean has no clear image at all. Because it is trying to copy the sky's appearance, but every time it attempts to coalesce the scattered puzzle pieces, waves spontaneously come as it destroys it. Somebody or something broke them. Everything was uncertain. It was like living in a world with no beauty at all.
The people who lived in this place were all broken. They are not sure about the life they had. They are afraid to embrace something that will change them. All they ever did was to be the reflection of something great.
They all wanted to reach the world of perfection. Broken ones wanted to be part of the world they are not supposed to be in." the story that enters Eisen's mind somehow catches Jade's full attention. At least, he made her listen.
"And how did the story ended?" Jade was curious. Eisen was able to notice that when he started telling her the story.
"Broken ones stayed in the world of chaos forever. If only they could've accepted who they are without trying to be someone they're not supposed to be. The cracks they possess and the acceptance of this brokenness were the only keys to redemption. They failed to see that their cracks are the light to guide them. The world was not in chaos. But the soul we possess are." Eisen's face fell sad. The emotion he felt was incomparable. His heart is shouting in agony as his mind screamed of pain. His voice was crack, but he made sure that Jade would never hear it.
"The worst part is that every time the sky falls to total darkness, the ocean tried to copy its reflection along with the twinkling stars high up above. Thinking that the way for the broken ones to live perfectly is to copy them, not realizing that the sky was also drowning in the thick darkness of the night. The sky let stars up high to show hope to the broken, for them to do something to save themselves from the ocean of despair,"
"Because perfection doesn't exist. It was just our minds that think about it, making us jealous about everything others have that we don't possess." Eisen's eyes darted towards Jade and welcomed her gaze,
"Are you sure this is still part of the story? Because it sounded like your story is related to something, related to you. Did you remember something from the past?" after a moment of silence, torturing himself with unspoken sorrow, Jade spoke in the right moment to take him back to reality.
"Most of the time, people are still living their lives as if 'perfection' was the only word that existed on their vocabulary, and they failed to see the reality because of that. And without challenges, their eyes will remain close. I am scared to be trap in the world of chaos, Jade. Everything I feel was uncertain, and that broke me every day. My mind is in turmoil, and it is driving me crazy. I don't want to live in a world full of darkness. I don't want to drown in the ocean of pain forever. So please, help me remember who I am." he was scared to be trap in the world he never dreamed of staying in. If only he can remember everything, maybe, he could finally set himself free and reach for the sky, the perfect world.
He thought that Jade would never understand him, but when he felt her hand lightly squeezed his hand, he knew that everything would be alright. She will help him.
"Eisen, people are trap in their despair. But life becomes worth living once you look deep within this ocean of pain, sorrow, and brokenness because these challenges reveal the true essence of life. Life is not like the ocean and sky. It's merely just the people. Maybe, if we stop trying to be someone because of the good things we saw from other people, we can finally set ourselves free from all hatred.
Maybe, you need to embrace the new you. We are broken for a reason, and challenges happen for a reason. And that reason will change us in the process, helping us develop to be someone better than who we are from the past. You said that yourself earlier."
He was unable to respond immediately to Jade's statement. Her words were like a sword of reality that pierces through his heart. He thought that he would writhe in pain because of it, but no. He felt so calm and at ease. Like a quiet ocean after a typhoon, a bright sky after the rain.
Eisen's gaze lingers at Jade's pensive eyes for a moment. Her word is like wildfire that rapidly spread inside him, making him burn inside. Jade might've noticed his deep gaze that made her uneasy, so she clapped her hand and smiled, "Anyway, your story is great! Let us go inside because it is getting late, and I'm growing tired."
With uncontrollable emotion, he immediately grabbed Jade's hand to stop her from leaving and rested it on his chest, where Eisen's beating heart is.
Jade was silent as they both stared into each other's eyes. Eisen tightens his grip on her wrist as he can feel his own beating heart.
"Eisen." She called out his name softly as her eyes landed onto her hands on his chest before looking at Eisen's eyes for the second time.
Jade didn't move her hand away from his body as their eyes locked. They both felt it, the tingling uneasy feeling and the burning sensation that devoured their soul. And the last thing they knew, they were already drowning in each other's gaze.
"I want to remember everything. I want to cherish my forgotten memories because I know that those memories keep me up in the morning and push me to keep moving forward. I want to feel complete and be myself again. Those memories I had in the past, I want them back because they are essential for me to grown. It's what shaped me and brought me this far. So, I can't just accept to be a new person, living with newfound memories. I want my past as much as I want to remember everything about this—about us.
I know that something will change when I let myself remember everything, but I know that you'll be there to help me get through it. So please, Jade, help me remember you."
