Chapter 14: The Whispers of Doubt
That evening, the rain stopped, leaving the city roads glistening under the streetlights. Zara sat on her bed, her legs crossed, staring at her phone. Zayd had texted her a polite, professional message confirming that the landlord had received the approved zoning paperwork.
Zayd: Everything is locked in with the landlord. See you at the café on Saturday to plan the next phase, Insha'Allah.
Zara: Great news. See you Saturday, Insha'Allah.
She set the phone down and buried her face in her hands. She was miserable. Winning the building should have made her completely happy, but the awkward, almost-hug in the lobby had stirred up feelings she couldn't ignore anymore. She was falling for him. He was brilliant under pressure, deeply respectful of her boundaries, and cared about the community just as much as she did.
But did he feel the same way? Or was he just dedicated to the project? After all, he was the one who had insisted on keeping things professional so they wouldn't disappoint their families.
At the exact same time across town, Zayd was pacing up and down his bedroom floor. He looked at his laptop screen, where lines of code blurred together. He couldn't focus. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the radiant, triumphant smile Zara had given him at City Hall.
He wanted to tell his mother the truth. He wanted to tell her that he didn't just want to build an app with Zara—he wanted to build a life with her. But fear held him back. What if Zara truly only saw him as a business partner? If he confessed his feelings and she rejected him, it would ruin the clinic project and destroy her dream. He couldn't do that to her.
