CHAPTER FIVE

1158 Words
Isabelle walked out of the conference room without a word and didn't look back. She walked straight out of the building and headed to her car. Her tears rolled down her cheeks as soon as she opened her car door, as if that was their cue. She cried so hard she felt out of breath and rolled down her windows. She lifted her head up from her palms to wipe her tears when she spotted Lucas and his musketeers leaving the office building. Lucas walked hand in hand with the unknown lady while his mom, Lucy, walked ahead of them. Isabelle's heart dropped because somehow she suddenly knew who exactly the unknown lady was and why she had just attended her divorce meeting. 'He has already moved on? How could he? Did I really mean nothing to him? Did he love me? Ever? Is she the reason for our divorce?" Isabelle had so many questions, but she knew there was no one to answer any of them. Isabelle spent an hour more crying and trying to fix herself up before she finally found the strength to drive. She stopped at a liquor store on her way home. She convinced herself it was right to drink as much as she was planning to because she needed it. ***** At home, she slammed the door shut behind her as she walked in, threw her shoes off, and headed for the kitchen to find a wine bottle opener. She popped the bottle open and downed almost half the bottle of wine in one drink. 'I need to wash the pain away.' "Radio! radio, music! I need music!" she rushed into the living room, turned on the radio. She searched through the channels till she finally found one that played upbeat music. Isabelle danced and drank and danced and drank a lot more as she tried to drown her sorrows. And when she was out of breath, she threw herself onto her sofa. "Oh my!" she laughed out loud, and then she stopped. She realized in that moment that she hadn't heard herself laugh in years, that she did not remember the last time she danced or listened to what used to be her favorite genre of music. Isabelle had lived her life since she met Lucas, trying to fit into his type of life. Lucas didn't like music. He grew up listening to opera and classical music, and so that was his favorite genre, which meant that it had to be Isabelle's too. Lucas learned from his mother that ladies do not dance around, especially ladies who belonged to the upper-class like they did, so Lucas had asked Isabelle not to dance unless it was ballroom style dancing. Isabelle did not mind changing all these things about herself because she loved Lucas, and she was convinced he loved her too, as much as she did or even a lot more than she did. But now she had realized it was all a lie. Isabelle's happiness faded quickly as she remembered how happy Lucas seemed as he walked out of his lawyer's office, building hand in hand with the unknown lady. She stood from her sofa and lay on the floor curled up. 'He said only uncultured and cheap women feel the need to show off too much skin, but there he was holding hands with a lady dressed like a teen and almost naked." She thought as she recollected the unknown lady's outfit. The unknown lady wore a mini skirt suit with high stilettos. She looked like she had just stepped out of a photoshoot for a magazine. 'Was that why he referred to me as old and washed out?' Isabelle tried to, but she did not understand how Lucas had begged her to dress the way she did, yet he claimed how she dressed was part of the reason they had just been divorced, and he had just moved right on with someone who dressed like everything he claimed he didn't want. Jealousy sparked, but Isabelle convinced herself it was just curiosity. Lucas arrived home furious after leaving his lawyer's office. He stormed into his house and headed straight to the bar in his living room to pour himself a glass of whiskey. His mother Lucy and Mia, the lady unknown to Isabelle, followed him in almost running. "Lucas? Lucas!" Lucy screamed as she walked towards him. "Why are you mad? This divorce is good for you." "Shut up," Lucas said in a low irritated tone. "Can you just stay quiet?" Mia scoffed as she walked towards Lucy and stood beside her. She tried to speak, but Lucas raised his hand to stop her. "Don't you even dare speak to me." Lucas warned. Lucy walked closer towards Lucas, " What is wrong with you, Lucas?" "Why did you bring her?" Lucas had a stern look on his face as he spoke to his mother. "Why were you even there?" Lucy stood there and stared hard at Lucas. She couldn't believe how he had raised his voice at her. "This is all because of that girl! I knew she was never good for you, I told you she wasn't. But no!" Lucy waved her hands, "You thought I was wrong, and now you're upset that I was right. You're not upset because I brought Mia to your silly divorce." "You're upset because you were wrong." Lucas downed his glass of whiskey in one go. He stood up and walked towards the stairs case. "Lucas," Lucy said as he lifted his leg up to get on the second step. He set his foot down and stopped walking up but did not turn to look at his mother. 'What am I even doing?' He thought to himself as he stood there. "Ask the servants to prepare for Mia's move." Lucy continued. Lucas turned to face his mother, but still stood in his spot. "Move? What do you mean?" "Mia is moving into this house to live with you," Lucy responded. Lucas thought of a million ways he could say no, but he couldn't. He couldn't say no to his mother. So he didn't, he turned back without a word and went upstairs to his bedroom. Lucas loved his mother so much that he let her have her way in his life since he was a little boy. He had lost count of the number of times he allowed her to make decisions for him that he didn't like or agree with since he was a boy, but could count the number of times he said 'no' to her. Lucas knew his mother did not like Isabelle because when he was with her, his judgment was less crowded, and he didn't need his mother's approval to do anything. Lucas knew Isabelle was good for him, but his mother had somehow managed to convince him that she was the only one he ever really needed.
