Chapter Nine — The CEO and Her Demon Guard

1055 Words
Morning arrived with the soft hum of the city and the scent of freshly brewed coffee. Ariana stood by the kitchen island in a silk robe, scrolling through emails on her tablet while the news played quietly on the wall screen. Her name dominated the headlines. COLE INTERNATIONAL CEO SPOTTED WITH MYSTERIOUS FIANCÉ AT WHITMORE GALA RUMORS SWIRL AROUND ARIANA COLE’S NEW BODYGUARD She sighed and took a sip of coffee. “That didn’t take long.” Across the room, Kai leaned against the counter, arms crossed, eyes fixed on the screen. He had barely slept—not that sleep mattered much to him—but being in the same space as Ariana made his senses hyperaware. Every sound she made, every subtle shift of emotion, echoed faintly through the bond. “They’re watching you now,” he said quietly. “More than before.” Ariana smiled faintly. “They always were.” She turned to face him, her expression turning serious. “Today’s board meeting will be chaos. Investors will question everything—my leadership, my choices, my personal life.” Kai straightened. “I’ll be there.” She blinked. “In the boardroom?” “Yes.” “That’s… unconventional.” “I don’t care.” Something warm stirred in her chest. “Good.” --- Cole International Tower rose like a glass monument to power and ambition. As Ariana stepped out of the car, cameras flashed instantly. Kai exited behind her, instantly positioning himself at her side—close enough to protect, far enough to maintain professionalism. Or at least, the illusion of it. “Ms. Cole!” a reporter shouted. “Is it true you’re engaged?” Ariana paused, fingers tightening around her purse. Kai leaned in slightly, his voice low. “Say as little as possible.” She lifted her chin and smiled for the cameras. “My private life is exactly that—private. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a company to run.” They moved forward together, a united front. Inside the building, whispers followed them like shadows. “Is that him?” “He doesn’t look human.” “He looks dangerous.” Ariana felt the bond stir—Kai sensed her tension instantly. Breathe, his voice echoed faintly in her mind. She inhaled slowly—and the anxiety eased. Her steps steadied. She glanced at him, surprised. Kai met her gaze briefly. You’re not alone anymore. --- The boardroom was filled with polished smiles and sharp eyes. Ariana took her seat at the head of the table, Kai standing silently behind her chair. The presence alone shifted the dynamic—people sat straighter, spoke more carefully. “Let’s address the elephant in the room,” one board member said carefully. “Your… fiancé.” Ariana folded her hands calmly. “My personal relationships do not interfere with my ability to lead.” “Security concerns—” another began. “Are being handled,” Kai said calmly. Every head turned. His voice wasn’t loud, but it carried authority—something ancient and commanding beneath the surface. “No threats will reach Ms. Cole,” he continued. “That’s not a promise. It’s a certainty.” A chill swept through the room. Ariana hid her smile. The meeting proceeded more smoothly after that. Too smoothly. --- It wasn’t until midday that the first warning arrived. Ariana was reviewing documents in her office when the mark on her arm flared sharply. She gasped, clutching her wrist as heat surged through her veins. Kai reacted instantly. “Someone’s watching,” he said, eyes darkening. “From very close.” Before Ariana could respond, the lights flickered. The windows rattled. Then—silence. The city noise vanished. Kai moved in front of her, shadows curling subtly around him. “Stay behind me.” A cold voice echoed through the room. “Demon-born.” A figure emerged from the far wall like smoke given form—tall, pale, eyes glowing an eerie silver. “And the marked girl,” it added. “How fortunate.” Ariana’s heart pounded, but she didn’t move. “Get out,” Kai growled. “You don’t belong here.” The entity smiled. “You don’t belong in her world either.” It lunged. Kai met it head-on, power exploding through the room as shadows clashed with blinding light. Ariana watched, breathless, as her demon guard fought with lethal precision. But then the creature slipped past him. Instinct took over. Ariana raised her marked arm. “Stop!” she shouted. The mark flared violently. Energy surged outward, slamming the entity into the wall where it shattered into shards of light and ash. Silence fell. Ariana stared at her trembling hand. Kai turned slowly, eyes wide with shock—and pride. “You’re learning,” he said softly. She swallowed. “I didn’t think. I just… felt you.” He stepped closer. “That’s the bond. You’re fighting with me now.” Their proximity made the air thicken, the bond humming between them. For a moment, the office—power, danger, titles—faded away. “I trust you,” Ariana said quietly. Kai’s voice dropped. “That makes you dangerous.” She smiled. “So does being loved by a demon.” Something flickered across his face—fear, desire, longing—all tangled together. --- That night, back at the penthouse, the tension finally broke. They stood on the balcony, city lights glowing below, the cool wind brushing against their skin. “You didn’t panic today,” Kai said. “I wanted to,” she admitted. “But knowing you were there… it changed everything.” He turned to her. “Ariana—” She reached for his hand. This time, he didn’t pull away. The bond flared warmly, wrapping around them like an invisible thread. “We make a good team,” she said softly. “Yes,” he replied. “And that’s what scares me.” She smiled up at him. “Too late.” For the first time since they met, Kai laughed—quiet, genuine, and unmistakably human. The CEO and her demon guard stood together beneath the night sky, bound by power, danger, and a growing affection neither could deny. And somewhere in the darkness, unseen forces watched. Waiting.
