The drive to the safe house was tense, the silence between Xyla and Kade thick with unanswered questions. The city lights blurred by, casting fleeting shadows across Kade’s face as he gripped the wheel tightly, his eyes scanning the road ahead.
Xyla couldn’t hold it in anymore. "So, are we just going to pretend that none of this is insane? Vampires, safe houses, silver blades—"
Kade cut her off, his voice calm but firm. "I know it’s overwhelming, but it’s real. You’ve seen it for yourself now."
She frowned, her fingers fidgeting in her lap. "But why me? Why do they want me?"
Kade exhaled slowly, his grip on the steering wheel loosening slightly. "It’s not just you. It’s what you are."
"What I am?" Xyla’s confusion deepened, and her frustration rose. "I’m not special, Kade. I’m just... me."
Kade’s gaze flickered toward her briefly before returning to the road. "That’s what you’ve always thought. But you’re not ordinary, Xyla. You’re... one of them."
The words hit her like a punch to the gut. "What are you talking about? I’m not a vampire!"
"No," Kade said, his voice softening. "You’re not. But you’re the heir to something much bigger. You’re the last descendant of the vampire queen."
Xyla blinked, her heart pounding in her chest. "The what? That’s impossible. My family—my mother—"
"They hid it from you," Kade interrupted. "For your own protection. But the vampires have known about you since you were born. That’s why your father was killed. That’s why I left... to keep them from finding out you were still alive."
Xyla’s breath caught in her throat. "My dad... died in a car accident."
Kade shook his head slowly. "No. It wasn’t an accident. It was them. They’ve been after you ever since."
The weight of his words pressed down on her, making it hard to breathe. She leaned back in the seat, her mind racing. "But if that’s true, why didn’t they just... take me then?"
"Because of your immunity." Kade glanced at her, his expression serious. "You’re immune to their bites, their compulsion. They can’t turn you or control you like they can with others. You’re... unique."
Xyla’s eyes widened. "That’s why that vampire didn’t kill me when it bit me earlier. It couldn’t."
Kade nodded. "Exactly. And that makes you dangerous to them. If the wrong vampire gets hold of you, they could use your blood to destroy entire covens. Or worse—"
"—use me to make themselves unstoppable," Xyla finished, her voice barely a whisper.
Kade’s jaw tightened. "That’s why I need to keep you safe. They won’t stop until they have you, Xyla."
She rubbed her temples, the weight of the revelation nearly crushing her. "So what am I supposed to do? Just hide forever?"
"Not forever," Kade replied. "Just until we can figure out a way to stop them for good."
Xyla shook her head, frustration bubbling up. "This is crazy. I didn’t ask for any of this."
"I know," Kade said quietly. "But you’re not alone. I’m here, and I’m not going anywhere."
Xyla glanced at him, a small flicker of gratitude piercing through her fear. She had so many questions, but one kept pressing at the forefront of her mind. "Kade... why did you really leave me back then?"
He hesitated, his grip on the wheel tightening again. "Because I had to. If I stayed, they would’ve come for you sooner. I couldn’t risk that."
"But you left without a word. No explanation. Nothing." Her voice wavered, emotion creeping in despite her best efforts to keep it at bay.
Kade sighed deeply. "I didn’t want to, Xyla. You have to believe me. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, walking away from you. But I thought it was the only way to keep you safe."
Xyla turned away, staring out the window. "I don’t know if I can forgive you for that."
The silence that followed was heavy, filled with all the things left unsaid between them. Finally, Kade broke it. "You don’t have to forgive me. But right now, we need to focus on surviving."
Xyla clenched her jaw, refusing to let the tears welling up in her eyes fall. "Fine. But once this is over, you owe me an explanation for everything."
Kade nodded, his voice steady. "You’ll get it. I promise."
They pulled up to an old, secluded house at the edge of the city, surrounded by thick trees and a looming sense of isolation. Kade parked the car and glanced at her.
"This is it," he said. "It’s warded—no vampire can enter unless they’re invited."
Xyla raised an eyebrow. "How do you know?"
"I’ve tested it," Kade said, a small smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "A few vampires tried to follow me here once. Let’s just say they didn’t make it."
Xyla felt a small flicker of relief. "And you’re sure we’ll be safe here?"
Kade nodded. "As safe as we can be. At least for now."
They got out of the car, and Kade led the way inside, locking the door behind them. The house was old but well-maintained, with wooden beams and faded furniture that gave it a rustic, almost forgotten feel.
"This place looks... cozy," Xyla said, trying to mask her nerves with sarcasm.
Kade chuckled softly. "It’s not much, but it’s kept me alive."
As they settled in, Xyla glanced at Kade. "So... what now? We just wait for them to show up?"
Kade shook his head. "No. I’m going to reach out to some contacts, see if we can figure out what their next move will be. We need to stay one step ahead of them."
Xyla sank into a worn armchair, her mind still racing. "And in the meantime?"
Kade stood by the window, his eyes scanning the darkness outside. "In the meantime, we prepare. Because they’ll come. It’s just a matter of time."
