The Queen Who Smiles

1148 Words
The Queen’s hand stayed raised. Not threatening. Inviting. Light gathered around her fingers, soft and beautiful, like moonlight caught in glass. It made the shadows at her feet recoil, curling back toward the walls. Lena’s body reacted before her mind did. Her wrist burned. The mark pulsed once—hard—and the air around her thickened. Kael inhaled sharply. “Lena,” he warned under his breath. “Don’t answer her. Don’t move.” The Queen smiled wider. “Ah. You feel her already, don’t you?” she said to Kael. “Every breath she takes echoes in you now.” “Stay out of her head,” Kael growled. The Queen’s eyes flicked to him. “Such devotion. It’s almost touching.” She lowered her hand slowly. The Veinways responded. The mirrors lining the corridor shimmered, their cracked surfaces smoothing as images bloomed across them. Not reflections Memories. Lena gasped softly. She saw herself as a child, sitting alone on her bed during a holiday, lights glowing outside her window while laughter drifted from other apartments. She saw birthdays forgotten, hands clasped around a mug gone cold. Kael stiffened. “Stop this.” The Queen didn’t look at him. “Loneliness makes such fertile ground,” she said calmly. “Doesn’t it, child?” Lena swallowed. “Get out of my memories.” “But why?” the Queen asked gently. “They led you here.” Another mirror flared. Kael now bound in shadow, younger, kneeling before the court. Blood on stone. A crown hovering above his head like a threat. Lena’s chest tightened painfully. “Kael…” His jaw clenched. “She’s twisting it.” “Am I?” the Queen asked lightly. “Or am I simply showing you what already was?” The images dissolved. Silence fell, heavy and suffocating. The Queen stepped closer. Kael moved instantly, placing himself fully in front of Lena. “One more step and” “And what?” the Queen interrupted softly. “You’ll unleash the curse?” She tilted her head. “You already did.” Kael froze. Lena felt it then the tension in him, the way the shadows trembled, eager and restless. She pressed her palm flat against his back. “I’m here,” she whispered. “Breathe.” He did. Slow. Controlled. The shadows settled. The Queen watched, fascinated. “Remarkable,” she murmured. “You calm him without chains.” She turned her gaze fully to Lena. “You are not what we expected.” Lena lifted her chin. “I didn’t expect to be here either.” A soft laugh. “Fair.” The Queen circled them slowly, her presence pressing against Lena’s senses like deep water. “Do you know why this realm holds a ball every year?” she asked. “For power,” Lena said. “For politics.” “Yes,” the Queen agreed. “But also for selection.” Kael stiffened. “No.” The Queen ignored him. “Doors open on holidays because humans are most vulnerable then,” she continued calmly. “Hearts are softer. Wishes are louder.” Lena’s throat went dry. “You lure them.” “We invite them,” the Queen corrected. “Some leave. Some don’t.” “And Kael?” Lena asked quietly. The Queen stopped in front of them. “He was never meant to bond. He was meant to rule alone.” Kael’s voice was low and dangerous. “You’re done.” The Queen’s gaze flicked back to him. “And yet here we are. With you bound not by law… but by love.” The word hit Lena harder than any spell. Kael inhaled sharply. “Don’t.” But it was too late. Heat flooded Lena’s chest, spreading through her veins, through the mark, through the bond. Her knees weakened. Kael turned instantly, catching her. “Lena.” She clutched his shirt, breath shaking. “She said it” “I know,” he said, forehead pressing briefly to hers. “Ignore her.” The Queen watched them, eyes bright. “Oh, I won’t deny it,” she said. “What you feel is real. That is what makes it useful.” Kael looked up sharply. “She’s not a tool.” The Queen’s smile cooled. “Everything in this realm is a tool. Even kings.” She raised her hand again. The Veinways shifted violently. The floor split, reforming into a wide circular platform. Runes ignited beneath Lena’s feet, crawling up her legs like glowing vines. Lena cried out. “Kael!” He grabbed her, pulling her close as the runes flared brighter. Pain lanced through her body hot, sharp but underneath it was something else. Strength. Her heartbeat thundered. Her vision sharpened. The Queen’s voice echoed. “Let us see how deep the bond truly goes.” Power surged. The runes climbed higher, wrapping around both of them now. Kael grunted, shadows exploding outward in response. The mirrors shattered one by one, glass raining down and vanishing before it touched the ground. “Stop!” Lena screamed. “You’re tearing us apart!” The Queen’s eyes widened not with fear, but with surprise. The runes faltered. Lena gasped as something inside her snapped into place. She could feel the magic now. Not Kael’s. Hers. “Kael,” she whispered, shocked. “I can push back.” His eyes locked on hers. “Then do it.” She didn’t think. She reached inward past fear, past pain and shoved. The runes flared blinding white. A shockwave ripped through the Veinways. The Queen staggered back one step. Only one. But it was enough. Silence slammed down. Lena collapsed against Kael, shaking violently. He held her tightly, whispering, “You did it. You did it.” The Queen straightened slowly, her expression no longer amused. “Interesting,” she said softly. “Very interesting indeed.” She turned away, her cloak dissolving into light and shadow. “This changes the game,” she said over her shoulder. “Rest while you can, little human.” The Veinways began to unravel. “We will meet again,” the Queen added. “Soon.” Then she was gone. The corridor groaned, mirrors melting into walls, pathways collapsing. Kael cursed. “We have to move. Now.” Lena nodded weakly. “Kael… what did I do to myself?” He looked at her with a mix of awe and fear. “You stepped onto the board,” he said. “And the court just realized you can move pieces.” The ground split open ahead of them, revealing a stairway plunging into darkness. From below came a sound Not footsteps. Breathing. Something large was waking. Kael tightened his grip on Lena’s hand. “Run,” he said. They stepped forward as the darkness surged upward to meet them.
