Chapter 18

1017 Words
Luna walked over to the cradle, where their daughter was doodling on a canvas with a stethoscope, the metal scraping against the linen with a soft rustling sound. Luna tied a blue ribbon to the canopy of the stroller, watching the light and shadow weave a galaxy in her daughter's pupils—the same starlight Alex had seen on the night of his fall. Luna gently lifted her tiny body, filled with emotion, "I finally understand the true meaning of happiness," she said to the gathered guests, "It's your support and love that brought us here, and the arrival of our little angel, Clio, has made our lives more complete." Alex walked over and gently wrapped his arm around Luna's shoulders. He saw their daughter reaching out her tiny hands, trying to grasp the candlelight in front of her. That innocent smile moved everyone present. Luna watched her daughter's little hands reaching for the candlelight, her eyes suddenly welling up. A frightening scene flashed through her mind—when she was three months pregnant, she had been hospitalized due to a threatened miscarriage. Alex had held the fetal heart monitor probe all night, the monitor's curves casting wave-like shadows on the curtains. She had suddenly grabbed his hand and pressed it to her belly: "Doesn't it feel like the dent in the awning from the night you fell?" He had kissed her sweat-drenched hair, finally understanding the metaphor of fate—the deepest wounds often give birth to new life. Only when he heard the first heartbeat did he bury his face in her palm: "Listen... doesn't it sound like raindrops hitting the awning?" Back then, she hadn't understood his trembling, but now, as their daughter's fingers brushed the candlelight, she suddenly realized—it was the rhythm of fear and hope intertwined. "Children are gifts from heaven," a relative remarked, "Seeing the three of you together is truly enviable." The celebration ended amidst laughter and joy, but Luna's heart remained unsettled for a long time. She gazed at her sleeping daughter, her heart filled with gratitude and love. In this challenging world, having a complete family gave her a sense of warmth and fulfillment she had never known before. "Alex, what kind of person do you think our daughter will become?" she asked softly. "Whatever she chooses to do, I believe she'll be as strong and kind as you," Alex held Luna's hand tightly, "And we'll always be her strongest support." On this warm night, Alex and Luna quietly watched over their daughter by her bedside, seeing her sleep peacefully under the moonlight. Their hearts were tightly connected, and together they looked forward to each new day. Outside the window, fine snowflakes drifted down, gently landing on the windowsill of the living room. Chen Yifan and Liu Qianxue sat side by side on the couch in front of the fireplace, their daughter Clio sound asleep in another room. The fire crackled softly, adding a touch of warmth to the quiet night. Liu Qianxue leaned against Chen Yifan's shoulder, holding a photo album open to their wedding photos. She chuckled softly, "Do you remember that day? When we exchanged rings in the church, your hands were trembling." "Yeah," Chen Yifan smiled, "I was so afraid I'd mess everything up, especially seeing you standing there in that white wedding dress..." His voice trailed off. Liu Qianxue looked up, her voice soft, "Do you remember the first time we met? Back then, you were lost, struggling with the meaning of life and unemployment." Chen Yifan closed his eyes, and the image flashed in his mind: the man he had been, standing on the rooftop, everything he had fought for—his suited colleagues, the bustling CBD, the vibrant nights—all turned to dust. Then he had met Liu Qianxue, and thanks to her, he had been given a second chance at life. "Yes," he said slowly, "It was because of you that I have this happy moment now." Liu Qianxue smiled tenderly. The firelight flickered, casting warm shadows on their faces. Chen Yifan reached out and gently touched Liu Qianxue's cheek, "You know, if it weren't for those setbacks and separations, we might not be where we are today." Liu Qianxue nodded, tears welling in her eyes, "Yes, I used to think losing you was the darkest moment of my life, but now I understand that it was those experiences that taught us to cherish each other. Whether it was the loneliness of waiting for you or the challenges we faced together, they made us realize how important we are to each other." Chen Yifan held her hand tightly, "I was scared too, worried that I couldn't give you the life you wanted. But looking back, those fears and worries only made me more determined—no matter what happens, I won't give up on you." Liu Qianxue leaned into his embrace, feeling the warmth of his chest, "Do you remember the first time we saw Clio? I could hardly believe my eyes." "Yeah," Chen Yifan recalled, "When we saw her, that feeling... it was indescribable. It was as if the whole world had become complete in that moment." He paused, "Sometimes I think that if we hadn't gone through those setbacks and separations, we might not have truly understood the value of family." Liu Qianxue looked out the window at the falling snow, "You're right. It was those past hardships and trials that taught us gratitude and made us cherish what we have now." The fire in the fireplace gradually dimmed, but the warmth in the room remained. Chen Yifan and Liu Qianxue sat quietly together, letting the memories settle in their hearts. The past setbacks and separations were no longer painful memories but the foundation that made them stronger and more appreciative of each other. On this peaceful night, they finally understood: happiness lies not only in the beautiful moments of the present but also in the storms they had weathered together. It was those experiences that deepened their love and made their family even warmer.
