Chapter 20

1117 Words
The pack house is quieter than usual. Not calm. Just… waiting. Casey sits beside Miles at the long council table, her father across from her, the Alpha at the head. The room smells faintly of cedar and smoke — old power and older secrets. Miles’ thigh presses against hers under the table. Solid. Grounding. But she can feel him. Not just physically. Emotionally. A low current beneath his composed exterior — tension. Calculation. A lingering thread of fury that hasn’t fully faded. And something else. Fear. It startles her. Her hand slides instinctively into his. His fingers tighten immediately. His eyes flick to her. You feel that? The thought isn’t words — just awareness. His jaw tightens. “Yes,” the Alpha says quietly, watching them both. Casey blinks. “Yes… what?” The Alpha folds his hands on the table. “The bond.” Silence fills the room. Her father shifts slightly, but he doesn’t interrupt. “The attack did more than threaten you,” the Alpha continues. “It accelerated what was already forming.” Miles’ thumb brushes over her knuckles unconsciously. Casey swallows. “I can feel him,” she admits softly. “Stronger than before. When he’s angry, it’s like it’s in my chest. When he’s tense, my heart races.” Miles exhales slowly. “And when she panics,” he says evenly, “my wolf pushes forward. Harder than it ever has.” The Alpha nods once. “That is not coincidence.” He stands and moves toward the large bookshelf lining the wall. From a locked drawer, he removes an aged leather-bound journal. The air in the room shifts. “Generations ago,” he says, returning to the table, “a prophecy was recorded by the first Luna of this bloodline.” Casey’s pulse stutters. Her father’s eyes sharpen. The Alpha opens the journal carefully, pages yellowed with time. He reads: When the wolf who burns too bright finds the moon who steadies his flame, their bond shall not weaken him — it shall crown him. She will not stand behind his power. She will awaken it. And in her awakening, she shall inherit the strength of the Alpha, doubling what once stood alone. Silence. The words settle heavily over them. Casey’s breath feels shallow. “What does that mean?” she whispers. The Alpha’s gaze lifts to her. “It means, Casey… that you were never meant to be merely Luna.” Miles goes still beside her. “You are meant to amplify him.” Her heart pounds. “And once the mating bond is complete,” the Alpha continues, “the power will stabilize. Combine. Expand.” Her father finally speaks. “You believe she is the fulfillment of this?” “I do not believe,” the Alpha says quietly. “I know.” The certainty in his voice makes the air feel electric. Miles’ grip tightens. Casey feels it — a surge of protectiveness from him so strong it nearly steals her breath. “But that kind of power,” her father says carefully, “comes with risk.” “Yes,” the Alpha agrees. “It does.” He turns to Miles. “You have always been strong. Stronger than most Alphas your age. But you lack balance.” Miles’ eyes darken slightly, though he doesn’t argue. “And she,” the Alpha continues, looking at Casey, “is your balance.” Casey feels warmth flood her chest. Not embarrassment. Not flattery. Recognition. The Alpha steps closer to her. “The rogues did not know what they were accelerating. Fear and trauma can force a bond to deepen. Survival instinct binds wolves quickly.” Casey looks at Miles again. “That’s why it feels different.” He nods once. “I can feel when you’re overwhelmed now. It hits like a spike.” Her fingers curl in his shirt instinctively. “And when you get angry,” she whispers, “my pulse matches yours.” The Alpha closes the journal. “Together, you are already stronger. Patrol leaders reported something unusual tonight.” Miles looks up. “What?” “The moment you shifted in that cellar,” the Alpha says evenly, “every wolf within a mile felt it.” Casey’s breath catches. “They described it as… pressure. Authority. Power layered over power.” Miles goes very still. “That has never happened before,” the Alpha adds. The implication is clear. It’s starting. Her father leans forward. “If this prophecy is true… what happens when the bond completes?” The Alpha’s gaze sharpens. “You will not just have an Alpha.” He looks at Casey. “You will have an Alpha pair whose power rivals the founding bloodline.” The room feels too small suddenly. Casey’s thoughts spin. “I don’t even know how to control what I am now,” she says quietly. “How am I supposed to handle… that?” Miles turns fully toward her. “You won’t handle it alone.” His voice is firm. Certain. The Alpha nods. “That is the purpose of the bond. Power shared does not corrupt as easily. It stabilizes.” He pauses. “But it also paints a target on you both.” The war is no longer just territorial. It is prophetic. Casey feels something shift inside her then. Not fear. Resolve. “They wanted to unbalance you,” she says softly to Miles. His eyes meet hers. “They did.” She straightens slightly. “Then we don’t let them.” Her father watches her carefully. The Alpha studies her like he’s seeing something click into place. Miles’ wolf hums beneath his skin — she can feel it now, a low vibration of approval. “You feel that too?” she whispers. His lips curve faintly. “Yes.” Her heart steadies. For the first time since the kidnapping, she doesn’t feel small. She feels… connected. Power flows between them in subtle pulses — not overwhelming, but present. Alive. The Alpha steps back. “Your birthday will not simply awaken the mating bond,” he says. “It will unlock potential.” “And if we’re not ready?” Casey asks. Miles answers before the Alpha can. “Then we get ready.” His hand moves to her waist again — not possessive. Anchoring. Grounded. Together. Outside, somewhere in the dark forest, a wolf howls. Not in warning. In recognition. And for the first time, Casey understands something fully: She is not becoming powerful because of Miles. She is becoming powerful with him. And when the bond completes— They will not just lead. They will change everything.
