Chapter 9

1089 Words
The pack house doors close behind them, and the night air feels colder than before. Miles walks Casey to the car, his hand still firm at the small of her back. Protective. Unyielding. He opens her door again, helps her in, then rounds the hood. The moment he slides into the driver’s seat and shuts the door, the world narrows to just the two of them. He starts the engine, but neither speaks at first. The silence feels different now. Heavier. “You can’t just decide I’m moving in with you,” Casey says finally, staring straight ahead. His jaw tightens slightly, but his voice remains calm. “I didn’t decide. I proposed a solution.” “You announced it,” she counters. He pulls away from the pack house slowly. “You heard my father. You can’t be alone.” “That doesn’t mean I move in with you tonight.” He glances at her. “Why not?” Her frustration flares. “Because I have school. Because I have parents. Because this is happening way too fast!” His grip tightens slightly on the steering wheel. “We’re wolves, Casey,” he says quietly. “When wolves find their mates, they build a life together. Immediately.” Her heart stutters at the certainty in his voice. “I’m not even twenty-one,” she whispers. “I don’t even feel this the way you do yet.” His expression softens just slightly. “I know.” “Then how can you expect me to just pack a bag and move in?” “I don’t expect you to do anything you don’t want,” he says evenly. “But I will not risk you.” She turns toward him fully now. “And what if I’m not ready?” The question hangs there. Honest. Vulnerable. He exhales slowly. “Then we take it one step at a time.” Silence fills the car again. Streetlights flash across his face. “You really think wolves just move in instantly?” she asks. A faint smirk touches his mouth. “Yes.” She huffs a breath despite herself. “You’re impossible.” “I’m practical.” She studies him for a long moment. “You’d really be okay with me there?” His eyes flick to hers. “Casey.” Just her name. But it carries weight. “I would prefer you there.” Her pulse flutters. She looks down at her hands. “If I agreed,” she says carefully, “I would need my own room.” His brows lift slightly. “For now,” she adds quickly. A beat of silence. Then— “Done.” She blinks. “Just like that?” “You want your own space. You’ll have it.” She searches his face for hesitation. There is none. “And I still go to school.” “Of course.” “And I can visit my parents whenever I want.” “Obviously.” She narrows her eyes. “You agreed way too fast.” A slow, knowing smile curves his mouth. “You said yes.” Her breath catches. He’s right. She did. He shifts gears slightly. “We start tomorrow.” “Tomorrow?” He glances at her. “Why wait?” Her heart jumps. “Miles—” His expression changes instantly. Sharp. Focused. She follows his gaze to the rearview mirror. A car is riding too close behind them. Her stomach tightens. “That car’s been there since we left the main road,” he says quietly. Before she can respond, another vehicle merges in front of them abruptly. Her pulse spikes. “Miles…” His voice drops into Alpha mode. “Stay calm.” A third set of headlights appears up ahead. Too coordinated. Too deliberate. Her breathing quickens. The car behind them inches closer. “Miles.” His jaw clenches. His eyes flicker briefly — distant. She recognizes it. Mindlink. His voice inside the pack network. Guards. My father. Location pinned. Now. Another car pulls up beside them on the driver’s side. Boxing them in. Her heart is slamming so hard she can hear it. “Miles—” “Lock your door.” She does immediately. The cars ahead suddenly slam on their brakes. Miles reacts instantly, braking hard but controlled. Tires screech. Her seatbelt bites into her shoulder. The car shudders to a stop. Her breath comes fast. “Miles—” He mindlinks again. Ambushed. Three vehicles. Send everyone. His father’s voice comes back sharp and steady. Help is on the way. Two figures step out of the car behind them. They move toward the passenger side. And then— They shift. Wolves. Large. Dark. Predatory. Casey’s breath turns ragged. “Oh my God.” Miles’ hand clamps over hers. “Stay in the car.” His voice is calm. But deadly. The wolves circle closer. Her pulse is pounding in her ears. And then— A distant sound cuts through the night. Howls. Fast. Many. Approaching at full speed. The two wolves freeze. Another answering howl splits the air — closer now. Warriors. The rogue wolves glance toward the sound. Snarl. Retreat. They bolt. Disappearing into the trees just as massive shapes burst through the darkness. Pack warriors. Claws tearing through dirt. Fury unleashed. Miles exhales slowly. His body is vibrating with restrained violence. Her hands are shaking. He turns to her immediately. “Are you hurt?” She shakes her head, breathing uneven. “No.” His hand cups her face, checking her, scanning her. His thumb brushes her cheek. “You’re safe,” he says quietly. The warriors surround the car now, securing the area. Her chest is still rising and falling rapidly. He was right. This is real. They were after her. Her fear morphs into something else. Decision. She swallows. “Miles.” His eyes snap to hers instantly. “You win.” He studies her face. “I’m moving in.” Tonight.” His expression shifts — not triumph. Relief. Possession. Protection. “You’re sure?” he asks softly. She nods, still trembling slightly. “I’m not doing this alone anymore.” His forehead presses gently against hers. “You won’t.” In the distance, his father’s presence approaches — powerful and furious_toggle. But inside the car, in that suspended moment— Everything changes. She isn’t just considering moving in anymore. She’s choosing him. And the bond pulses stronger than ever. Tomorrow won’t wait. And neither will they.
