Chapter 7 Transfer the Assets Away

925 Words
'Is Jake actually feeling sorry for that b***h? What does that make me?' Emma’s heart now hurt a hundred times worse. She thought she had picked the right guy, someone who would help her escape her nightmarish childhood once and for all. Jake, eaten up by anxiety, was looking for a way to get his mistress to leave. It'd be easier to handle Emma solo. "I'm cool with it, but you're just laying it on a bit thick, that's all. Lila... Ms. Dawson, she's the financial manager here." "Really?" A creeping sneer flickered on Emma’s face. She fixed Lila with a piercing stare. "They are offering special services now?" No one could endure being shamed to the face indefinitely. Lila hadn't expected such a jab from Emma. She clutched her mouth, eyes wide, looking like she was on the verge of tears. Emma, seemingly unaware of how cutting her words were, scoffed, "What's the matter? Can't handle a little honest feedback? Need me to show you the door, madam?" She wasn't trying to be cruel; she was simply exhausted, ready for the curtain to fall on this drama. When Jake hesitated, saying nothing more, Lila gave him a long, tearful look and dashed out. Of course, Jake didn't chase after her. His mind was all about placating Emma now. Emma watched him with a frosty gaze, her heart turning cold. 'If you really love her, why stick around with me? Is it the thrill of the affair that allured you to cross the line? Or am I not good enough to please you in bed?' Turning her back on the despicable man, Emma focused on Simon. "I'll have Simon moved back to the rural nursing home in a few days. He doesn't deserve this plush room. Trash like him can be handled by the government. If you still want to play the good guy, figure it out yourself. I'm done footing the bill for him!" Simon was shocked by Emma’s declaration. Would being sent back be as good as a death sentence? "Emma, come back! Damn it..." Simon bellowed. Seeing begging didn't work, he resorted to curses. Emma didn't give him another glance but walked out of the room. Jake didn't follow immediately. Emma didn't care whether he was comforting Simon or concocting some plans with Lila. She got in her car and called Lucas. "Hey, Emma." The usually smooth-talking lawyer sounded unusually grave this time. "Mr. Morgan, I need you to draft a divorce agreement, now!" When Jake came out, she'd lay it all out—she knew everything! Then she'd drag him straight to the lawyer's office to sign the papers! She was through with him! "I'm afraid that's not possible." Lucas’s voice was chilly. "Why?" "We've just completed an asset audit. I recommend you come down to my office alone first to review the details. It seems all the substantial assets registered under you and Mr. Everhart's names have been transferred away." "What did you just say? Everything?" Her voice shook as she spoke. "Yeah, everything. If you go through with the divorce now, you wouldn't even own the house you live in." Lucas paused for a moment and then added, "And your daughter—she's eight now. The court will definitely take her wishes into account. You sure she'd pick you?" Sera's disappointed face emerged in Emma’s mind... Overwhelmed by the immense hit, she finally broke down in tears. "Keep your head, Emma. We'll work something out." Lucas’s voice was soothing, but Emma was swallowed by her grief. She ended the call and saw Jake walking out of the nursing home towards her car. Drying her tears, she rolled down the window and said, "Hop in, Jake. Let's head back." Jake hesitated for a second. Emma seemed different today, almost menacing, like a wolf eyeing its prey. "Come on, get in. What, you scare I'll bite?" Emma teased with a smirk. Jake managed a weak smile and opened the door with a sigh. He still wasn't sure if Emma had caught on to anything. He had just left Lila's office; her tears had gotten to him, and he had promised to handle Emma quickly. Before the large insurance payout, Emma couldn't find out anything! "Sorry, Emma, I... I didn't mean to keep things from you. I just thought Simon looked so lonely..." "You know how I feel about lies and betrayal," Emma said, eyes fixed on the road, hands steady on the wheel. Hearing that, Jake instantly made his promise. "I'm sorry. I swear I won't keep anything from you again! If I'm still hiding something, may God strike me down!" "Is that so?" Emma almost laughed out loud. Had he changed, or had she just never really known the man she married? How could he make such promises so lightly? Emma’s eyes hardened, and she slammed the gas pedal to the floor to speed up. Jake broke out in a cold sweat while gripping the car door handle tightly. "Emma, what are you doing?! Slow down! Chill out! Watch the road!! Ah... His voice cracked, but Emma seemed to hear none of it. Her head was filled with Jake's lies, his schemes, and his betrayals. She felt like the whole world had turned its back on her. 'Is your swear sincere? Fine, I'll send you to meet God now!' A wild look crossed Emma’s face. Seeing the truck ahead, she didn't slow down but sped straight towards it. With a loud crash, the world around Emma fell into eerie silence.
