CHAPTER 4 — A Letter That Lit Her Life
Graduation day at St. Catherine’s felt surreal.
Girls hugged their proud parents. Cameras flashed. Laughter filled the courtyard.
Eliana stood alone under a mango tree, clutching her certificate as if it might disappear.
Then she heard it.
"Eliana! Eliana, wait!”
Father Dominic hurried across the field, panting but smiling.
She ran to him, bursting into tears — real, loud, messy tears. He held her tightly.
"'You survived,”** he whispered.
"You made it.”
The next morning, he handed her a sealed envelope.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
"Congratulations, Miss Chukwuma.
You have been awarded a full sponsorship to Ridgefield University.”
She cried so hard she struggled to breathe.
Finally… life was opening a door.
CHAPTER 5 — A New Beginning at Ridgefield University
Ridgefield University felt like stepping into another universe.
Big lawns. Lively students. Laughter that didn’t hide cruelty. Classrooms filled with possibility.
She wasn’t ready, but she walked in anyway.
During orientation, she met:
Zara-loud, hilarious, and chaotic in the best way
Mara— soft, calm, and emotionally perceptive
They didn’t judge her; they just accepted her.
For the first time since childhood, Eliana felt wanted.
Zara pulled her into group photos. Mara brought her snacks during lectures. They both swore to “un-traumatize her.”
Slowly, her walls began to crack.
She started laughing, smiling, and living.
But life had more surprises in store.
CHAPTER 6 — Enter Adrian Lawson
He walked into her life during a general elective.
Tall. Soft curly hair. Warm eyes. A smile so disarming she forgot her name.
He sat beside her and whispered:
"Please don’t let me fail this course. I beg.”
She almost choked on her pen.
They became study partners, then friends, then inseparable.
Adrian brought sunshine into rooms without even trying.
He walked her to church. Bought her chin-chin because “you look stressed.” Teased her gently. Listened to her deeply.
Eliana felt something she had never felt before:
Safe. Seen. Cherished.
She didn’t know he was already falling for her — hard.
And she definitely didn’t know the secret that would soon shake her world.
CHAPTER 7 — The Hidden Truth
During semester break, Adrian found documents in his father’s office — sponsorship files.
One name caught his eye:
Eliana Chukwuma.
His jaw dropped. His heart raced.
His father, Mr. Lawson, had been anonymously sponsoring her since SS2.
Adrian sat there for hours, stunned. It felt like fate playing a private joke.
He didn’t tell her. He wasn’t ready. He didn’t know how.
He just knew one thing:
He loved her.
CHAPTER 8 — The Sabotage
By 300 level, their bond was clear.
Except to Talia, the girl who loudly liked Adrian.
She confronted Eliana and hissed:
"He only pities you. He’s here because he feels sorry for your background.”
Eliana froze.
But Adrian found out.
In front of half the department, he replied:
"Talia, with all due respect… don’t ever talk about her like that.
I care about her. Genuinely.”
Talia’s reputation crumbled.
That night, Adrian held Eliana’s hand near the campus fountain.
"Ella… I love you.”
Her breath caught. Her heart stumbled.
She didn’t say it back — not yet.
But she knew she was falling too.
CHAPTER 9 — The Secret Revealed
A week later, Adrian felt it was time to tell her the truth.
Under their favorite tree, voice shaking, he said:
"There’s something I need to tell you.
My dad… he’s the one sponsoring your education.
I didn’t know until months ago.”
Silence. Heavy. Sharp. Painful.
Eliana felt her world shift.
Not because he lied — but because trauma twisted everything into fear.
She whispered:
"I… I need time.”
And walked away
CHAPTER 10 — Two Weeks Without Him
She avoided him. Ignored his calls. Cried into her pillow. Feared she was losing something beautiful.
Zara and Mara staged an intervention.
Zara said:
"Babe, breathe. He didn’t know. That’s information, not feelings.”
Mara added:
"Eliana… you’re scared, not angry. You need to talk to him.”
And, as always, her friends were right.
She went to him — heart racing, palms sweaty.
Adrian looked broken when he saw her.
She stepped closer.
"I wasn’t angry. I was scared. I’ve lost so much...
But I know you care about me.”
She took his hands and finally said it:
"I love you, Adrian.”
He didn’t just smile; he beamed.
