Chapter 13 – Lavender’s POV
We’ve been walking for about an hour now. The sun’s light shines on our backs and gives everything it touches a golden glow. There is still a little bit of dew on the moss and trees rustle softly in the soft morning breeze. Darius and I still haven’t said a word to each other. But I have caught him looking at me a couple of times. He always tries to play it off by saying he’s looking at something in the distance, but his reddening ears give him away every time.
Lance told me I should use this time to get to know Darius and to sort out my thoughts about him a bit. It’s not really working yet and there are just so much other things to think about right now. Like what am I gonna find in the answer cave? Is it even a good idea to go there? What is there are traps? What if that cave doesn’t even exist? It’s not on the map Lance gave us. Not that I’ve been able to take a good look at it yet. Darius doesn’t want to stop and check the map for some reason. Every time I pull it out to try and see where we’re supposed to go, he takes it from me and puts it back in my bag. I’ve stopped trying to get it out now, but I am still curious about the reason behind his behaviour.
~Time Skip~
Still no conversation. We’ve left the forest now and we’re walking through a huge sea of small purple flowers. I’ve forgotten what their name is, but they smell quite strong and they’re really pretty.
It’s reaching midday at this point. The sun is standing high in the sky, shining down on us. I’m starting to get hungry. I have packed some food this morning, but it’s not much. I put my hand on Darius’ shoulder to stop him. He turns around. “Something wrong?” He asks.
“I’m hungry. I packed some food. Do you want some as well?” I stop, put my bag on the floor and open it. I take out some of the food and hold it out to him. He looks at it with distrust in his eyes. As if he expects me to have poisoned it. But eventually, he takes it from me and takes a small bite out of it.
“Where did you get these?” He asks me with his mouth still full. “I packed it this morning.” I don’t know what kind of answer he was looking for, but after I said that, a wave of relieve seems to wash over him as he eats the rest of the food. I take out some food for myself and the both of us eat our food in silence.
I’m starting to doubt it was a good idea to take Darius with me. He doesn’t talk to me, he doesn’t look at me and I bet that if I stopped walking without telling him, that he wouldn’t notice. It’s like he’s ignoring me on purpose and it’s really frustrating.
“Hey Darius.” I call. He stops walking and looks back at me. “What?” He asks. I can tell he is annoyed with me for some reason, but at this point, I’m getting annoyed myself. “What is wrong with you? You have been ignoring me ever since we started this trip. Is there something wrong with me? If you didn’t want to come with me on this trip, you could have just told me!” Darius’ annoyed expression turns to one of confusion. “How do you mean. I’m not ignoring you.”
“Well, maybe you’re not ignoring me. But you are making me feel like you don’t want to help me find my memories.” I cross my arms, waiting for Darius to answer me. But he doesn’t. He just shrugs and walks again. “Hey, wait up!” I quickly run after him.
Darius’ POV
I can tell she’s getting annoyed with me. And, not gonna lie, she has every right to be. It’s just that ever since this morning, when Lance lovingly came out to wave us goodbye and hand her a map, I’ve felt left out. I’ve felt like a ‘second choice’, like she didn’t want to go with me but went with me anyway because ‘mister perfect’ Lance had better things to do. I know I might be taking it too far now and I would totally understand it if she ditches me somewhere and continues by herself. But if she did decide to do so, I would still object, because I wouldn’t be able to keep my eyes on her. I wouldn’t be able to help her if she needed it and my own conscious would eat me alive, knowing I could have been able to help her if I just set my own ego aside to be there for my mate.
The sky is getting darker and darker. It’s almost night now.
Lavender has stopped pushing me to tell her why I’m acting so strange. I don’t know if I need to see that as a good thing or not.
“I think we should set up camp pretty soon. It’s probably not save to walk around here at night.” I tell her. She nods silently and points at a big tree on a small hill. “We could put our stuff there.” She grabs my wrist and pulls me with her.
I can feel the sparks shoot up my arm. It’s warm and tingly. If only I could get over my jealousy and enjoy the alone time I’ve been given with my beautiful mate. But every time I want to, an image of her and Lance pops up in my head, reminding me how close they were with each other and how close they still are after she lost her memories. “You know what, I’m gonna let you go. I’m not gonna pull you all the way up the hill.” She sighs and lets my arm go. The tingling sensation stops.
With my werewolf reflexes, I immediately grab her hand back with one of mine and I gently caress the back of her palm with my other. I’m waiting for her to pull her hand back in disgust of me and for her to scream to leave her alone. But she doesn’t move a single muscle. I can feel her heartbeat starting to synchronize with mine. My eyes catch and hold her gaze. I stare into her big, dark hazel coloured orbs, which stare directly back into my blue ones. I can feel the corners of my lips pull up into a wide grin. Current events are only confirming the opinion that this is how the rest of my live is supposed to look like, with her by my side.
I don’t know how long we stood there, but Lavender shakes her head, as if waking up from a daze. “Come on let’s get to the tree and set up camp.” I sigh inwardly. If I could, I would have made those peaceful moments last forever.
Lavender turns around and walks off. I manage to keep holding her hand and I quickly follow her up the hill.
The tingling feeling that occurs as our skin touches is like a dr*g. The more I take in, the more I keep wanting it. Once we reach the top of the hill, Lavender shakes her hand loose and I sadly have to let go to set up camp.
~Time skip~
Me and Killian have camped out in the woods many times, but tonight feels different. I miss him and Hayleigh. I hope they’re is doing alright back home.
Lavender have taken place in our own separate sleeping bags. That fact gives me mixed feelings. On one side, I’d rather want to share one sleeping bag with her, so I could hold and cuddle her throughout the night to make her feel save. On the other hand, she might feel uncomfortable by the idea of sharing one sleeping bag. I can still sense a bit of distrust from her side. The connection we had on the bottom of the hill tell me that she seeks the same connection with me as I am with her, but she also seems lost and like I said earlier, distrusting of me for some reason. I have to remind myself to ask her why sometime. I look over to my right, where Lavender peacefully lays in her sleeping bag. I can tell she is already asleep. Like I’ve felt her doing when she thinks I don’t see her, I take my time to study her beautiful face. The moon makes her skin glow. Her hair frames her face perfectly even when she sleeps. Her pouty lips are slightly curled unto a small smile. Is she dreaming of me? Is she dreaming of Lance? I can feel my jealousy surface again as soon as I think of that prince like ‘fiend’ of hers.
I turn my attention back to her face. Her small nose has a few freckles on it, giving her an extra youthful look. I feel like I’m being enchanted by her beauty even when she’s asleep. I reach my hand out to touch her cheek. As soon as my hand makes contact with the soft skin of her cheek, everything around me goes black.
*************************
Where am I?
I try to look around, but everything is dark. The temperature is a bit lower than comfortable for a human. I try to move my limbs. To my surprise I can freely move them. I put my arms out in front of me and start walking around, hoping to find something to hold onto or something that could help me find my location. Suddenly, I bump into something. It feels familiar. It’s soft, like human skin. I can feel a hand on my chest. Familiar sparks erupt from the small touch.
“Lavender? Is that you?” I ask
After a few seconds I get a response: “Yeah, Darius? What are you doing here? What’s going on?”
Right after she asks that a light goes on. Lavender and I both look at each other. I have one hand on her waist and the other one on her right arm. She has both of her hands on my chest, but also immediately tries to let go. I let her, but take her hand back in mine in return. I scan my environment. We are standing in a huge cave. The cave is lit up by crystals of all different sizes, shapes and colours.
“This is the answer cave,’ a voice says.
It’s a smooth, but deep voice. It’s the kind of voice, perfect for storytelling or inspiring speeches. . I franticly look around, to try to find the person the voice belongs to. While doing so, I catch a glimpse of Lavender. She doesn’t nearly look as frightened as I probably do. She just looks confused. She holds the hand that isn’t holding mine next to her mouth and calls: “Are you the guy with the bright blue eyes?”
I whisper to her, “who do you mean, who are you talking about?”
She doesn’t get a chance to respond cause from behind an extra large crystal, a man appears. He is a little bit taller than I am. He is built lean, with sharp features. His skin is pale as snow. His eyes are so bright blue, that it almost looks like he has small lamps in his eye sockets instead of eyes. He also has a pair of pointy ears, royal looking clothes and to top it all off, a crown on his head that compliments all his facial features. He strides over to us. “Lavender, it’s good to see you again.” He makes a small bow to her.
If every guy we meet in this world is gonna act like this towards MY mate, than I will surely lose it.
“Who are you?” I ask suspiciously.
“Well, Darius. It’s good to meet you to.” The pale man grants me a charming smile. “I’ve been wanting to talk to you for some time now as well. There are some things the both of us need to discuss. I know both of you have many questions and they’ll all be answered with time. But first, since I haven’t done that properly yet, let me introduce myself: Vaeril Gorwin Daesandoral, king of the dimension Swaedan, the dimension of the ice elves, and also YOUR HALF BROTHER.”
“Yeah, sure,” Lavender scoffs, “We don’t even look alike.”
Vaeril crosses his arms and lifts one of his eyebrows. “Well, Lavender, let me explain: I didn’t know you and I were biologically related either. Not until you lost your memories. I felt like I was missing something, even though I wasn’t missing anything. So I asked our father the former king of Swaedan and he explained it to me. I know that you know how you were created. Your fairy god mother explained it to you, didn’t she? Well, I was created in the same way. But instead of my soul taking residence in a couple on earth, it connected with the then ice elf queen. Which is why we don’t look alike, but are biologically related. The only difference between you and me is that your spirit was created when the blue moon was out. The blue moon is one of the rarest natural occurrences across all the dimensions. It is widely known in these lands that spirits that are conceived under the blue moon tend to be extra powerful.”
“But if you came from the former king and queen of the ice elves, then who are my birth parents? And how is it that he can be in my dream as well?” She asks the last while pointing at me.
This is it…
I think. This is where she finds out about my identity and all the lies I’ve been telling her. “I don’t think I am the right person to answer your second question. I think he has to answer that himself, when he is ready to do so, but I can answer the first question. Your parents belong to some of the highest ranks among werewolves out there. Your father is in possession of the alpha title of one of the biggest werewolf packs on earth and your mother is his soulmate.”
Lavender furrows her eyebrows. I can tell that she still has many questions. Then, something in my head clicks…
Alpha Dorian! He lost is new born child almost two decades ago. She could be his daughter. You know, the alpha’s territory I was in when I found Lavender, apparently his long lost daughter. I don’t know much about how she disappeared, but rumour has it that she’d been kidnapped.
My expression must have shown my revelation, because both Vaeril and Lavender turned to me and looked at me with an expecting look in their eyes.
I tell them about alpha Dorian and how he and Lavender might be related. I look at my mate again and with this new information I finally see the resemblance between her and my good friend Dorian. She’s got her mother’s eyes, but definitely his hair texture and color. His and her smile are also very similar.
I can see the hope in Laender’s eyes. I can tell she is relieved to finally get some clarity on her background.
“How do you know alpha Dorian? Have you met him? Are you friends?” She looks at me with hope glistening in her eyes.
Here it is. The moment my identity is revealed. I’m honestly kind of scared she’ll start treating me differently. I sigh.
“You know how Vaeril told you how your parents belong to some of the highest werewolf ranks on earth? Well, so do I.”
“How do you mean? I don’t understand.”
“I’m like your father.”
“You’re being too cryptic.”
“Ugh, I’m a werewolf, just like your father! I’m the future king of ALL werewolf packs!”
Lavender flinches at my screaming and does a step back. The space she puts in between us feels even emptier than space usually feels.
Once she gets over the initial shock of me yelling at her, her eyes go wide and her jaw drops.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” She looks indignantly at me.
“So you’re not scared of me?”
“WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME?”
“Because…” My heartrate speeds up. I don’t have the courage to look my mate in the eyes anymore.
“I don’t know.”
“Yes, you do know! Tell me! I mean, you know about my background, you know I’m not a ‘normal’ girl. Why didn’t you tell me about your background?”
“Well…”
“Yes?”
“I guess I was scared you’d treat me differently. I knew I wouldn’t treat you differently once I’d get to know more about you, but I didn’t know how you’d react to me being werewolf royalty.” I can feel my cheeks burning with heat.
Then I feel a hand on my cheek I look up, into Lavender’s eyes.
“And Hayleigh and Killian, how about them, are they werewolves?”
She already knows, I might as well tell them.
“Yes they are. Killian is my beta. Which means that he’s like a right hand to me.”
A small smile appears on her face.
“I’m glad you were finally honest with me. Ever since we met, I felt like you weren’t honest with me. And now I finally know. The only question left is: How have you gotten into this dream if only biological family could get in?”
I look to the side, to Vaeril. He just raises his eyebrows at me again. I look back to my mate and everything goes black again.
*************************
Lavender and I open our eyes. The both of us are still in the exact same position we laid in when we fell asleep.
She sits up and looks me straight in the eyes.
“So it was you who saved me from the shadow figure?”
I try to look away from Lavender, but she won’t let me get away again. And, understandable. I have been lying to her ever since we met. I would be desperate for answers as well. I sigh and tell her the entire story.
~Time Skip~
Through the whole story Lavender listens to me carefully. The detail I still don’t tell her is that she and I are mates. I know she has suspicions, but I don’t think she knows it’s the mate bond she feels.
I need to wait for the right moment to do so.
When I end my story, Lavender nods. “Yeah, that makes more sense than the last story you told me.” She reaches for her bag and takes out some food to eat for breakfast.
And after eating, we continue our journey in silence. But luckily, the tense atmosphere is completely gone.
