CALEB
“This is impossible.” Miguel muttered as he read the case, “Three investigators already said that it was a dead end. We couldn’t really get as much even if we wanted to.“
I perfectly understood what he meant. I have never let out a promise to a client before, knowing that my abilities still have limits and I can’t solve everything that falls in my hands. My lines were always “I will try my best” because I didn’t want to break any promises I had made. That is how crucial our line of work was.
My mind may still be fuzzy from losing control earlier.
I am still trying to figure out what happened earlier. When I was talking to Zeke, my senses were still heightened but much more manageable. The mere touch when we shook hands made me want to growl again. The wolf, my wolf, I don't know how to call it, was exceptionally talkative today, when it had never really talked to me in the past. I’ve been trying to communicate with it for years because deep inside, I knew it was possible. Still, I never received any response... until Zeke came into the picture.
It kept on saying that Zeke was our mate. What does that even mean? A lot of things don’t make sense. I had moments when I was still new, but I was never this handful, especially not after a full moon. My wolf is barely awake typically and was only active around two days before the full moon at most. I can’t explain it, but I could feel it when it was near my consciousness and when it wasn’t.
Earlier, it was a huge surprise and very overwhelming.
“Hey, you’re spacing out again. I really think we should withdraw from this case for your sake, too." I could see where Miguel was coming from. He was used to me always being collected. Being triggered this way changes everything.
I didn’t mind him and continued checking the information Zeke had sent. She also left soft copies of the documents she had earlier given and copies of the CCTV images and footage.
Liam Montero was last seen around the gas station, where they stopped for a bathroom break. He came in, but there was no footage of him going back. There were other CCTV videos of people who looked like Liam, but it wasn’t him. I could already guess Zeke had spent tons of money just to get such information.
I kept on checking on the videos just in case there was something that the past investigators had missed, but there was nothing doubtful in the videos at all!
“You’re really ignoring me. Am I the only one panicking here? Did you see your condition earlier? It’s like you’ve been ravaged by a wild animal." I looked at him with a straight face. He quickly realized the mistake in his words.
“I apologize for being a wild animal, but we’re not letting go of this case. In fact, we’ll meet the person who last saw Liam Montero." Miguel still looked hopeless. I’m sure he doubts we would get anything from Liam’s co-teacher.
"Caleb, you're a werewolf. Not a god. We are the fourth investigator she hired, and by your reaction, you didn't see any difference with the past conclusions."
I nodded, "I know, but we have to try."
He heaved a sigh, declaring defeat. Miguel knew my “talent” for making people confess. I always use my supernatural abilities for good use.
I shut the laptop before closing it and putting it back in its bag, “Did you check where he was working? It’s time to jump down memory lane and reminisce about our high school." I grinned widely after seeing his dumbfounded reaction.
“Oh god... Did you mean?" Miguel couldn’t continue his question. I laughed at him and patted his shoulder.
“Yeah," I confirmed his thoughts and practically dragged him out of the office.

We walked towards the high school entrance but didn’t know how to even enter. After all, we cannot just barge inside just because we are alumni of the school.
It was our dilemma until a familiar, loud voice called our names.
“Behriger? Walkers?" Both of us turned and saw our old chemistry teacher. We both smiled as if on cue. The chemistry classes weren’t dull because of him. He was the jolliest of their teachers, so he was pretty memorable.
“Mr. Forbes." We greeted. I didn’t expect that we would still see him around.
The old man smiled, “I didn’t expect to still see you two again. I see you’re still stuck to each other like glue. How are you?" We exchanged simple conversations and caught up while I slowly introduced why we returned to the place.
The man’s eyes widened and became distant, “so that woman still hasn’t given up.” His voice sounded both sad and worried.
“Do you know her? Zeke Montero, and her brother?" I had to ask. We might get something from the old man.
The man in his 60s nodded, “I suppose you had no idea. But I was promoted as the principal of this school years ago. The incident surprised the whole school, and I did everything to help Mr. Montero’s sister, but the police had already given up, and the case was closed. Other private investigators came here, but I couldn’t say anything except what I knew. I really thought she had given up already. Poor girl." He probably didn’t expect that another one would show up.
Miguel nodded, “We were hired by Ms. Zeke Montero for the same reason. Is the teacher who last saw him still teaching here?" We couldn’t stall the serious conversation any longer.
“He is. His name is Arthur Clarity." The man quickly supplied and gestured for us to come in. We walked towards the familiar hallways. I was glad I could live an ordinary high school life before my wolf came in. I don’t know what to do if it came out that early.
I shook my head. There was no time for reminiscing. I had to find any new clues that would lead to Liam.
