The constant feeling of being watched causes my skin to crawl. My stomach is swollen and the pain is unbearable. Lieing on the bed screaming in pain as it feels like I am being torn in half. The cry fills the air and the pain subsides a huge pressure being lifted from me.
I look to see a baby girl placed in my arms but green glowing eyes glisten from the darkness behind the window. Frantically running through the woods carrying the screaming child a man following me closely looking over his shoulder. He pulls me to a stop and chants gibberish before we disappear and my bare feet land in cool wet soil that feels familiar.
Sobbing as the child is set down gently and the woman chants more gibberish the baby crying but her skin glows brightly before fading. Then they vanish the howl of wolves cutting everything off.
I stand in the kitchen scrubbing dishes while I stare out the window in a trance. Sleep came easy but would not go away when the nightmares started. I replay the dream in my head over and over trying to make sense of the strangers that haunted me last night.
Today is the first day of trials, and my body is screaming for a bed. I'm finishing dishes from breakfast before preparing for the trials. Even my morning shower did nothing to clear the haze I'm in. I dry my hands and head to my room throwing on black shorts and a forest green conforming tank top. I lace my running shoes and turn to the mirror grabbing my scrunchie and pulling my hair up in a high ponytail.
My face shows no sign of exhaustion no bags under my eyes or anything. My complexion is clear and glowing not pale. Yet my body slightly aches like I'm coming down with the illness.
I huff and shuffle through my potions aimlessly looking for the potion to help with my fatigue I take a small swig and set it back down before noticing the potion I grabbed wasn't the fatigue potion but the scent of unmasking potion. I huff and close the potions not wanting to risk mixing them.
I head out the door to find Jade heading toward me with a smile. She is wearing a blush colored crop tank that squeezes her perfectly and shows off her thin body. Then she had tight spandex shorts on that match and blush colored running shoes. She wears light makeup and her platinum blond hair is pulled into a perfect ponytail on top of her head. Her green eyes pop against the blush colors and her light complexion.
She holds up her potion excitedly and wiggles her eyebrows. Even with the exhaustion I still find her funny and laugh softly.
She hooks her arm with mine and nearly skips with me out of the basement. On our way out of the pack house we are both sprayed with the masking potion.
We make our way to the training field that is just full of participants. Many have a look of annoyance on their face while others look slightly excited. This is my first year participating. I'm not 18 yet but my birthday falls on the last day which is fighting in your wolf form. Clearly I will lose so I have little to no hope over this.
I stand with Jade who is casually talking to a few of her friends before everyone seems to tense.
The aura changes and Jade pulls me to the front of the group of people where we see Alpha Reed walking out with a man about the same size as him but younger. His eyes scan over the crowd ignoring Alpha Reed before landing on Jade. She squeezes my hand and I look to her confused but her eyes don't leave the alpha next to her father.
"Lela, it's my mate." She whispers to me nearly out of breath.
I see that he is still staring at her and I pry my hand from hers before giving her a soft push. After seeing that he makes his way to her quickly before pulling her to his chest firmly.
I smile as I see him whispering in her ear as she sobs into his chest. She always was emotional but she's dreamed of this day for as long as I've known her. Not having a wolf means I don't feel the urge to find my mate if I even have one. I'm not even sure I would be able to point them out if I found them.
I notice she is no longer crying and watch as he leads her over to where he was going to be seated. I notice Alpha Reed sit on one side of a big black tent and the unknown alpha and Jade sit in the other side together. The tent is dark inside, but I see two gold eyes glowing inside. The King seems to be scanning over the crowd of people but not seeming very interested as he doesn't bother to get up.
The royal guard ushers us out of the field and we stand to the side in a line. The first day is a pre set up obstacle course that consists of several difficult things. The top 20 people with the best times get to move forward to the next round which is hand to hand then the top ten move to the last round which is combat between wolves. In the end, the King will decide if he wants to take the winners.
The head guard briefs us in what the obstacle involves before we line up a single file to race through individually and get timed. It goes off of age and since I am the youngest I am the last to go.
I watch as endless people beat times over and over again. Until finally I am up at the line. The guard gives me a strange look before looking back toward the King for a second. He quickly snaps his head back to me and I feel my skin prickle from all of the eyes on me. I remove my shoes unlike everyone else and dig my feet into the soil.
I look to the guard who holds up three fingers before slowly dropping them and blowing the whistle after one. I take off digging my feet into the soil as I push my legs fast. I'm not sure what has taken over me but the exhaustion dissipates.
I slide under the log not slowing down to climb over like everyone else. The next I dive over rolling out and sprinting out of it toward the swinging ropes to hop between. I don't slow down and leap reaching for the second rope barely grabbing it before the next is within distance.
I land to the ground hard and take off once more making my way to the wall with the rope to climb. I push my legs harder and run up the wall before I am about to fall having made it halfway up catching the rope and quickly climbing the rest of the way up before making it to the top and the whistle blowing once more.
I hear Jade cheering obnoxiously others join in to chant my name. I lean forward heaving to catch my breath as they come in hard and fast. I slide down the rope and am engulfed in a hug from Jade. She hands me a bottle of water and I drink every last drop within seconds.
"Lela, you were incredible! I've never seen anything like that." She talks excitedly as we slowly walk away from the obstacle course back toward the packhouse slowly.
I look at her scrutinizingly because she just watched all the wolves do that probably with better times. I realize everyone is lined up beside us and everyone is silent I quickly jogged over to the line and Jade returns to her new mate. I listen as they call the top 20 people out by name. They aren't in order and it seems almost endless.
"And Liliana Junius. Meet back here tomorrow for the next trial."
My mouth drops open and I look to Jade who is jumping up and down with excitement. Not a single omegas name was called but mine.
Everyone heads back to the packhouse but I stand stunned for a few minutes until I am tackled to the ground by Jade. The air is knocked out of me and I gasp for air but she is pulled from me quickly. I scramble to my feet and she is squealing excitedly.
"Lela, you made it to the next round!!" She squeals and pulls me into a quick tight hug bouncing slightly. When I'm released I notice the man next to her and and nod awkwardly to him.
"Lela this is my mate Peter Henson." She says grabbing the man's arms. I laugh at her slightly and look back to him.
"It's nice to meet you, Alpha." I say quietly and nod before looking back to Jade and giving her a soft smile.
"Your potion worked he can smell my scent and everything." She squeals and my eyes go big my face paling and my hands sweating.
"You are a witch?" The alpha asks looking at me intently and I quickly shake my head no.
"No, Alpha! I'm just a human. I-I just spend my time studying witchcraft and have made a few potions." I say nervously, and Jade looks at me apologetically.
"No, she isn't a witch, just my little human. Oh Lela you have to join us for dinner especially after that. I won't take no for an answer." She says while joining her arm with mine and pulling me toward the packhouse with her.
"I need to shower Jade." I say quietly and she nods then released me to let me escape to the shower.
I walk swiftly toward my room with the small attached bathroom. I run a bath with lavender bath soap. I sink my now sore once again aching body into the bath slowly. It doesn't feel like a sore kind of ache but something else.
I close my eyes and try to relax, but that daunting dream comes back to me and the prickling feeling of someone watching me. My eyes fly open but I see no one around and calm my racing heart.
I wash and step out of the bath drying my body and hair quickly. I throw my hair in the towel while I exit to find an outfit to wear to dinner. I decide on some comfortable jean shorts and a yellow tank top.
I drop my hair from the towel brushing it and leaving it to dry naturally. Then I throw on some flip flops and head toward the dining room.
When I enter the dining room most of the chairs are filled besides on end of the head table with several empty seats. I spot Jade and she is waving me toward her and the empty seat she saved for me.
I walk over to her and sit beside her. I take note of Peter next to her and nod politely to him. I also take note that we are sitting at the end with all of the empty chairs instead of beside her father like normal. Dinner is served and the King and his men don't bother to show up.
After dinner, I excuse myself and head back to my room packing my bag and throwing a large hoodie over my clothes my hair making it's way into a bun. I head out to my spot making it there just before midnight and sitting down to look up at the stars.
I pull the journal out and the wind blows flicking through the pages like last time.. it stops on a different page and I begin reading again.

'The pain from my labor vibrates through my body but I know it will be a long one. The amount of power she contains will drain me of my energy before I am done. I've made time to write and ensure these passages make their way to you. Neil is on high alert as your appearance slowly grows closer. The world needs you my sweet and cannot survive without you. The covens prepare for the rituals required to fulfill your birth. The castle is on lockdown and no guests are within our walls. The wind howls as the rain pelts the grass the gods crying for your help. Please my sweet remember who you are and come to our aid.'

I sigh and slide my fingers between the page to read the next. When I flip it is blank I shuffle through the rest of the book and it is all blank. I go back to the page from today and see the writing clear as day and I turn it back a page. The page I read yesterday is also blank.
I feel my skin prickle and my hairs stand up on my neck. I look around but see no one around the hair in the back of my neck stands up and a shiver runs down my spine.
I close the journal and hop off the rock heading toward the packhouse. I hear shuffling behind me and whip around but no one is there. I gulp loudly and turn to continue walking at a faster pace than before.
A twig snaps behind me and I whip around to see two eyes glowing through the brush. They look golden and my breath hitches as I blink a few times. The eyes are a pale brown not the golden ones from the tent. The wolf snarls and a few more sets appear and step out of the shadows.
Rogues we're within the territory and inches from me.
They step forward and my body begs me to take a step back but I refrain knowing that will only make it worse. Wolves love the chase for their prey it drives them wild.
I take a deep breath and pray to the goddess above to protect me from these wild creatures that want to take my life. The one in front growls before lunging at me and I close my eyes.
I hear a slight yelp and see the wolf dead on the ground in front of me. The other two look confused then to me with their ears back and teeth bared. They both lunge for me but a large creature that towers over me jumps in front of me blocking them. I hear two bodies land on the ground and my heart hammers in my chest as I stare at the giant black fur covered back of this beast.
I don't look long before turning on my heels and booking it out of the forest dropping my shoes. I run as fast as my legs will carry me but the farther I get from the rogues the more my body begins to ache. Probably from the physical excursion.
I make it to the field of grass and see the pack house come to life as warriors rush out shifting and heading toward the woods. I see Jade on the steps clinging to Peter as he speaks to her rubbing her cheek. Her eyes land on me and go wide with shock.
"Lela! What are you doing out here it's not safe!" She shouts and I don't stop running until I make it to them. I choke for air but quickly get the word out I need.
"Rogues!" I shout in between gasping for air and Peter let's go of Jade heading straight for the forest he shifts on the field taking off with impeccable speed. Jade rushes me inside and to my room while I catch my breath.
"What happened out there?" She asks as soon as she closes my door and I head to my closet putting my bag away and changing into pajamas. I plop down in the bed and she sits beside me gently.
"I was just coming back from reading at my spot and I thought I kept hearing something. When I turned around three rogues stepped out of the brush and tried to attack me." I say awkwardly but a shiver runs down my spine as I remember it.
"How did you get away?" She asks with her eyebrows furrowed together.
Flashes of the giant beast run through my mind. I feel my face pale and a cold sweat starts on my body. My heart races as my body ignited with pure terror just from the sheer size of the monster in the woods. I feel tears sting my eyes and look at Jade without knowing what to say.
She pulls me into a tight hug and I sob softly into her shoulder trying to rid my mind of the haunting figure that for some reason saved my life.
Was it so that it could kill me instead?
