Xavier was stronger than I remembered him to be. Packed with muscles that he hadn't had before. He pulled Andrew and Bastian off of each other with little effort. Simply moved his arms, like he was picking up a grocery bag, before tossing them away from him.
Both men grunted and collapsed on the ground.
Andrew was the first to his feet, hands already balling into fists at his side. He snarled loudly, spit flying into the air. Eyeing Xavier, he c****d his head to the side. But his eyes slid to my frozen frame and they flickered for a fraction of a heartbeat. Not long enough to stop the fear in my chest. Just long enough to make my guilt soar high.
Bastian, on the other hand, remained on the ground, staring up at his Alpha. A perfectly sculpted brow perked up to his hairline whilst he watched Xavier.
Without looking back at Bastian, Xavier straightened his crisp navy suit jacket and checked his watch. "Don't you think it is too early for a fight, Bastian?" He asked smoothly.
This only served to irritate Andrew.
He opened his mouth to speak but Xavier cut him a glaring look, shutting him up immediately.
"Have you seen the rings around her neck?" Bastian asked Xavier back, eyes alight with fury.
Xavier, without batting an eye, turned to look at me. His eyes shuddered once. Twice. Took in the purplish markings on my otherwise porcelain skin. The cunning smile on his lips vanished. His head snapped back at Andrew, murder simmering just beneath the surface of his skin.
"You did that to her?" Xavier asked a shade too darkly.
Andrew raised an eyebrow but refused to look my way. "You only see the rings around her neck and not the one around her finger. She is mine to do with as I please,"
Wrong. f*****g. Answer.
Before Xavier could reply, Bastian was already up and storming Andrew.
I yelped again, the cry coming out mangled. Twisted. Just like my insides. "Don't hurt him! I shouldn't have cheated!" I screeched but watched as Bastian tackled Andrew into the asphalt.
More blood splattered around them, sending the coppery tang straight into my nose. I choked on the smell. Wrapped it around my heart several times over.
Andrew had always been so good. So, utterly good. Sure he remembered when he wanted to and didn't always listen to what I needed. That didn't mean he was a bad father or husband. He wasn't bad. I had been the one to f**k up and he only reacted. Was still reacting.
"Bastian!" Xavier commanded and my other mate's spine slammed straight.
A fist hovered above Andrew's nose and I knew it wouldn't collide until Xavier gave the order. His self-control and respect for Xavier ran too deep.
"He hurt her, Alpha. He hurt our mate. How can we allow him to walk away without a punishment?" Bastian groaned back, his words clipped.
Beneath him, Andrew was sending Xavier death glares that rivaled those of worst enemies. It was a side to him I had never seen before.
And I would be lying if I said it didn't scare me a bit.
"I never said he won't be punished, Bastian, but look at her. Does she look like she is enjoying this scene unfold before her?" Xavier asked, eyes slipping towards me.
Even with so much going on around me, I couldn't help but sputter at his beauty. His resolve. The way he carried himself reminded me of someone in power. Of someone in total control of themselves and their surroundings. The look fitted him perfectly. It also tightened my core beyond what I was willing to admit.
Reluctantly, Bastian eased up on Andrew. Anger blazed in every contour of his body. Teeth snapped tighter in a clear show of disdain. A promise to Andrew that he would get what he was due, all in good time.
Xavier brushed his hands on his pants and stared at Andrew with a look I could only describe as pure loathing. A muscle twitched in his jaw, the only outward indication that he was beyond furious. Livid to the point of ripping Andrew's head off.
If only they knew what he had done for me over the last several years. How he had cared when no one else had. How he was a brilliant father to a son that never biologically belonged to him.
This had been an accident. His words earlier were said out of anger. Nothing else.
Clucking his tongue, Xavier took a step closer to me but I remained rooted to the spot. Refused to look at either him or Bastian. Instead, I focused only on Andrew. Tried my best to convey to him how sorry I was for all of this.
His eyes only blankly looked back at me.
"Do you even know who you assaulted? Do you have any idea the consequences that can come from what you have done?" Xavier asked in a voice unlike the one I knew. Hard and brutal.
When Andrew didn't answer, Xavier pressed on.
"She is the former Luna of Brightsun. Mother to the only living heir. The widow of my brother, Alpha Xander. Which means," Xavier explained, and took one, long, menacing step towards Andrew. "You have openly declared war on Brightsun through your actions. Wife or not, she is still the mother to the heir. That crime is punishable by death," He stated it so matter-of-factly. Like it was the simplest topic to discuss.
Murder.
"No!" I screeched and my feet finally moved. I swung myself between Xavier and Andrew, catching Xavier's gaze in the process. "He is Levi's father. He might not biologically be his, but he raised him. Think about what his death might do to your nephew!" I argued, voice raising in pitch.
"So, it's true," Andrew mumbled behind me.
I glanced over my shoulder at him, expecting understanding to be on his face. What I found instead had my blood chilling. His face had morphed into nothing but seething rage. Lips twisted. Red blotches along his otherwise tan skin. A vein or two popping out on his forehead.
I had all of a second before he launched himself at me. Recoiling, I bit down on my bottom lip hard enough to draw blood. My resounding cry from his impact vibrated inside my skull. Claws, sharp and unyielding, ripped into my back, causing a scream to shatter my throat.
Bastian was on him within a flash. Cursing and snarling. He threw Andrew to the ground again with a lot more force than the first time around. A crack sounded but I was too absorbed in my own pain to care.
The air hitched in my lungs. Fire crawled down my spine in heavy waves. My legs trembled beneath me and eventually gave out. I was sure I would kiss the ground before strong, warm arms wrapped around my middle and hoisted me up.
Xavier's hand brushed the start of the s***h on my back and I hissed in response. Bucked wildly to be free.
"Sutton! Sutton! Calm down! Please! I need to see what the damage is!" Xavier commanded above me but I was consumed by my pain. It dragged me down. Forced my breaths out in shallow pants.
"I'll kill him," Bastian screamed from beside us. Another crack sounded and I yelped.
"N-n-n-no. Don't. Take me away. Don't kill-" Each word got more difficult than the last. Shredded my throat.
Warm fingers drew soothing circles on my back but it didn't help the raging storm on my back.
"Bastian, get her to the car. We're leaving,"
Those were the last words I heard before darkness took hold of me and refused to let go.
