Chapter 4: Fractured Loyalties

Kahlia’s heels clicked against the marble floors as she exited the ballroom, her mind already three steps ahead of the game. She had planted the first seeds of doubt—Victoria was rattled, Eros was watching her every move, and William Hartford was intrigued. Now, it was time to press harder. She stepped onto the expansive balcony, the cool night air a welcome contrast to the heat of the ballroom. The city skyline stretched before her, lights twinkling like distant stars. But Kahlia wasn’t here for the view. “Enjoying the party?” She turned her head slightly, unsurprised to find Rafael leaning against the railing beside her. The man was as predictable as ever, his need to stay ahead of the chaos making him an invaluable informant. “I was until I had to endure meaningless small talk,” Kahlia said dryly. Rafael smirked. “And yet, you were just whispering sweet nothings to William Hartford.” Kahlia rolled her eyes. “Please. That man only responds to calculated flattery.” He chuckled. “And what exactly are you after, Kahlia?” She exhaled, her gaze returning to the city. “Eros built his empire on the backs of people like William. If I dismantle his network, I dismantle his control.” Rafael studied her for a moment. “And what if Eros fights back?” Kahlia’s lips curled into a smirk. “Oh, he will. But that’s the fun part.” Before Rafael could respond, footsteps sounded behind them. “Kahlia.” She turned slowly, already knowing who it was. Eros stood in the doorway, his eyes dark with restrained fury. Rafael straightened, slipping his hands into his pockets. “Well, this is my cue to leave.” Kahlia didn’t acknowledge him as he walked away. Her focus remained solely on Eros. “You’ve been busy,” he said, stepping onto the balcony. Kahlia lifted a shoulder in a half-shrug. “You know me. I don’t like to waste time.” Eros exhaled, running a hand through his hair. “Why are you really here, Kahlia?” She arched a brow. “Isn’t it obvious?” He took another step forward, closing the space between them. “You want revenge.” She met his gaze head-on. “I want justice.” Eros laughed, but there was no humor in it. “Justice? For what? For the lies you told? For the choices you made?” Kahlia’s jaw tightened. “For the betrayal.” He exhaled sharply. “You don’t get to rewrite history, Kahlia. We both made mistakes.” She shook her head. “Mistakes? What you did wasn’t a mistake, Eros. It was calculated. Cold. You left me with nothing.” His expression flickered, but he quickly masked it. “And yet, here you are, back in my world.” Kahlia smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “Not for long. Just until I burn it down.” A tense silence stretched between them. The weight of the past, the unspoken words—they pressed against them like a tangible force. Finally, Eros spoke, his voice low. “Be careful, Kahlia. You’re playing with fire.” She stepped closer, her lips inches from his ear as she whispered, “Then let’s see who burns first.” And with that, she turned and walked away, leaving Eros standing alone on the balcony, the city lights casting shadows over the storm brewing in his eyes. --- Kahlia didn’t waste time. The next morning, she met with her informant—a woman named Celeste, who had worked for Eros’s company for years. Celeste had seen everything, heard everything. And now, she was ready to talk. “You’re sure about this?” Kahlia asked, sipping her coffee as she sat across from Celeste in a quiet café. Celeste nodded. “Eros has been making deals with some questionable people. Offshore accounts, hidden investments. If you dig deep enough, you’ll find enough to bring him down.” Kahlia’s mind raced. “I don’t just want to bring him down—I want to make him suffer.” Celeste hesitated. “Then you need to hit him where it hurts. His reputation. His legacy.” Kahlia smiled. “Perfect.” She slid a thick envelope across the table. “You know what to do.” Celeste took it without hesitation. “Good luck, Kahlia. You’ll need it.” Kahlia watched as Celeste left, determination burning in her veins. Eros had taken everything from her. Now, it was her turn. And she wasn’t going to stop until he had nothing left. --- Eros leaned back in his chair, the dim glow of his office casting long shadows across the mahogany desk. He had spent the entire night going over reports, tracing every move Kahlia had made since her return. He had underestimated her once before. He wouldn’t make the same mistake again. Cassian entered the room, a folder in hand. “She’s been meeting with people—powerful ones. Hartford. Celeste. Even Rafael.” Eros’s jaw tightened. “I expected as much.” Cassian hesitated. “And there’s more. Someone’s been leaking information about our overseas operations. A journalist is already sniffing around.” Eros swore under his breath. “Kahlia.” Cassian nodded. “She’s not just here for revenge, Eros. She’s here to destroy you.” Eros clenched his fists. “Let her try.” A dangerous glint entered his eyes. He had built this empire from the ground up, survived betrayals, fought wars in boardrooms and on the streets. Kahlia thought she could bring him down? She had no idea who she was dealing with. The game had officially begun. And this time, he would make sure there was only one winner.
