Brianna was seated in the conference room, scanning the faces of the big men suffocating her. It looked like one of those meetings they held in the 60's; with the big men in suits and ties. Only here, it was a group of industry owners.
A man was speaking at the front of the room. Although he was making a presentation on a new d**g about to be launched into the medical field, it felt like the whole meeting was a mafia gathering. Brianna was supposed to be taking notes but she hadn't even written up to a page yet. Her stomach was burning. Or perhaps it was her abdomen. Something was stretching inside her, rather painfully.
" You okay? ", Nathan suddenly asked.
" Huh ", she asked back.
" You seem uncomfortable. Is something wrong? ", he cautiously asked.
" I-I think it's period cramps", Brianna managed to say. Nathan wasn't convinced seeing as her eyes had begun watering. " Come , let's go out. ", he said, already on his feet. "No. No. I'm okay. I'm fine." , she tried weakly. Nathan hesitated for a moment but just as he was about to take his seat, Brianna let out a soft whimper of pain. Before she could decipher what was happening, Nathan whisked her out of the room not caring for the attention he was attracting. Everything was blur in Brianna's eyes, her ears were ringing and her abdomen just kept stretching with evil force.
A distinct ringing sound forced her eyes open. It wasn't in her ears this time; it was a phone. When her eyes opened, she first noticed a middle aged woman beside her bed, her attention on a book she was writing in.
" Hey, how are you feeling?". It was Nathan. He stood with a worried look on his face on the other side of her bed. Two other women stood in the doorway; one on a phone call and the other- was staring at her which such intensity, it was scary.
" Oh. Sir. I am awfully sorry.", she apologized, a remorseful look on her face. Nathan shook his head immediately; "No, it's fine. I understand. Health is always important. ".
" But the meeting.....", she started. " Been adjourned. Don't worry. It was boring anyway." , Nathan said waving her off.
Brianna only sighed in desperation
" Hello, Miss. Adams. I'm Doctor Delis. I'm the head of Health Issues Unit in this firm.", the middle aged woman introduced. Brianna nodded and spoke, "Doctor, I'm fine, really. it's just cramps, I'm sure. I just need a hot bath or something. I'll be alright.".
"That's why I'm the doctor here, Miss Adams. I see beyond the normal dysfunctions we are familiar with.", the doctor said with a firm but friendly smile. " You have a problem. Now, there seems to be an issue in your abdomen. A scar if some sorts. ", the doctor added, a deep frown if confusion on her face. Brianna squirmed uncomfortably. Isn't this supposed to be confidential?, she thought.
" Um.. I had a tumor removal procedure some years back. I'm not really healed yet. ", she gave, satisfying Nathan's curiosity. People didn't fret this much when they had mere cramps.
"That makes a lot of sense. Are there any prescriptions you are obliged to take? ", Doctor Delis asked. "Yes. Although, I haven't been taking them regularly lately. I'm at fault. ", Brianna replied guiltily.
" Well, there you have it. Drugs are drugs for a reason, Miss. Be more committed to taking them, okay?" , the Doctor instructed. Brianna simply nodded.
" She's free to go, but every month demands a check up here.", the doctor said to Nathan as though Brianna didn't exist or couldn't take care of herself.
Nathan nodded graciously and thanked her continuously. "That's what you pay me for, Nathan. ", Doctor Delis joked before walking away.
"You are taking the rest of the day off.", Nathan instructed a dumb founded Brianna. "What?, Why? ", she objected.
"My order.", he replied, a stern look on his face, "Ashley, please help Miss Adams get home, will you? I'll call you tonight to check up on you, but I'll see you tomorrow, Miss Adams." ,he said with a smile Brianna realized to be extremely attractive.
Soon she realized that, the woman who gave her the death stare was the Ashley Nathan was talking to. The same person who was supposed to escort her home. No way she would allow someone as unfriendly as that find out where she lived. When she'd sat in Ashley's car, she figured there was absolutely nothing that would pull the two of them to have even a simply chatty conversation. She was right; the entire ride was silent. No music, no words, and not even a single breath could be heard from either woman. Two people who were just meeting for the first time, yet they both carried some crazy, thick tension.
This will be a long ride- Brianna thought.
