Because he did not know the names of towns, or directions in which he needed to go, he'd gotten on the wrong train, and found himself in a lawless, godless city, filled with sights of which he had never seen before, and would never wish to see again. At one point he had been attacked by three men who wanted his belongings. He had to use his magic in ways he only knew how in order to survive. The money he had taken from Billl did not take him far, and had run out. If it were not for finding a shelter in some building called a church, where he had been welcomed by a blessed soul who seemed to be the only human who had the fear of God
