Kael moves fast. We’ve been riding for what feels like forever, checking on patrol after patrol. Most of the guards are in wolf form, huge and silent, bowing their heads when Kael approaches. I cling to his fur, trying not to fall off every time he leaps over a log or dodges a tree. Eventually, he slows. Then he nudges me gently with his shoulder, lowering himself so I can slide off. I stumble a little when my feet hit the ground. “Uh, I’ll have to work on that.” He huffs — definitely laughing at me — and steps back. A ripple moves through his body. Bones shift. Fur retracts.
