CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE Luca opened the door and revealed a narrow, rickety-looking staircase that led into the shadows. He clapped his free hand against the wall, but nothing happened. I snorted. “Somebody forget to pay the magic candle bill?” Luca leaned in and I noticed his eyes glowed a bright green color. “The candles have been removed.” I scoured the shadows, but my weak human eyes couldn’t make out anything more than the semblance of walls. “You don’t happen to see any scary creatures lurking in the dark, do you?” “Not yet.” I snorted as he led me down the stairs one step at a time. “Comforting…” Luca held up his free hand and the bright flame he’d shown off earlier for the students blazed up.
