CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE As they vanished from sight the light of the runes flickered one last time before they were extinguished. Luca stretched himself to his full height and flexed his muscles as though they had been cramped. I looked him over. “Are you okay?” He nodded. “Yes, now that the spell has been lifted.” A soft groan came from our savior, and we turned our attention to the crumpled mess that was the master vampire. Luca and I hurried over, and my mate flipped the master over onto his back. Even for a vampire, he looked incredibly pale, and there was a strange discoloration just below the collar of his cloak. His eyes fluttered open, and he gave us a sly smile. “I had forgotten how much trouble it was to meddle in the affairs of mortals.” Luca managed his own soft smile.
