She waited for a moment looking at the already dead baby who was floating in air. The bats too flew around him quietly. It was as if they were marking him. It was then the loud booming voice of his crying echoed. The bats flew back to their trees upon hearing the cries. She ran towards him, her hopes back in her heart. He was alive. Looking at him she saw how his pale skin shone in moonlight. Due to his cries his cheeks reddened up. Slowly picking him up she tried to shush him. His cries for a moment subdued and slowly for the first time ever he opened his eyes. He had green eyes just like his mother. He stared at her while she saw him with awe. There was no denying that he was beautiful chubby baby but she knew for sure that he would pass this fragile character of his in to a strong ruthless man she wanted him to become. She put him back in the basket and strode out of the graveyard and castes a spell on the entrance to hide it from the passerby. Walking faster she was keen on reaching a secluded place where no one can find her but before that she had to make some arrangements for food and shelter. Walking through she a found a lonely hut and decided to ask some help. Knocking the door an elderly woman answered it. She squinted her eyes to look who it was so late at night. "Who is it?" She asked wearing her spectacles slowly when she was not able to see clearly past a blurring view. "I am Hedger. Actually i lost the way. Can you be kind and offer me shelter while i have a baby with me?" Hedger sweetly asked the elderly woman. "Ohh. Sure sure. You have a child. Its so cold outside. Hop in." She replied while opening her door wide. "Thank you." Hedger slowly strutted in and closed the door. It was a small hut with a dim candle lamp burning. The kitchen was perhaps a table on which a single stove lay. There were few utensils and a bed on a corner. The woman's clothes were worn out. She had already got the idea that she was poor and she can't provide her with much help. "Would you like some tea?" The elder asked as she turned around to look at her. "Hmm.. yeah. If its not much of work for you." Hedger polietly replied. "Ohh come on. Juat do one thing go put that kettle with a some water and on the left side is a small jar in which there is some tea leaves. Sugar is somewhere nearby. Make yourself some and give me too." The elder woman muttered while Hedger gave her a weird look for asking her to do the chores as if she was her long lost relative. Shrugging she made themselves some tea. "If you don't mind can i get some milk?" Hedger asked sitting near the new born who looked like about to cry. "Why?" The old man asked. "Actually my child is hungry." She replied while bringing the baby to her lap as he had woken up and was making cry faces but had not started crying. "Why you dont breast feed him?" The old woman asked her concerned as the child had started crying. "I hmm.. i have a problem with lactation." Hedger replied nervously trying to come genuine. "Ohh.. poor baby. Breast milk is essential. Although i dont have milk at home but you can buy it from near by. A family sells cow milk half a mile from here straight down the path." The old woman told her at which Hedger's concern started growing. It was obvious that she can't keep the baby hungry as he would grow weak from continuous wailing. She thought about going and bringing the milk but she could not risk leaving the child alone with a weird woman who she didn't believe. She was being overly cautious about the child as she had taken great peril to bring the child to life. Deciding against it she departed the hut with the wailing child in the basket. It had started snowing by now and it was cold. She just hoped that the infant was strong enough to cope up with it. She was walking fast to reach the house and hoped that may be she find a shelter there too. Her teethes started chattering while all she thought about was the child. She was half the way when she heard someone shouting. "There she is. Run behind her." One of the man said. There were other two with him of whom one was her husband. Taking a deep breathe she started running with the basket holding near her chest. She ran fast and finally saw the house near bushes. Taking harsh short breathes she ran across the road and turned behind to see them they were still long way from her. Hiding herself she knocked the door vigorously. She prayed to all her ancestors to save her for once. "Who is it?" A young girl open the door looking at tired and worried Hedger. "Look i don't have time. Can you just keep the baby and protect him till i return for him. Please don't say no. My husband will kill my child as he doesn't wants our child. Please just for sometime. He is behind me." Hedger pleaded while the girl looked at her shocked. "Dear you just come in. We wil- "No. Please do as i say." Hedger uttered as she saw the mens nearing and looking around. Removing the baby from the basket she gave to her and ran from there. While the baby looked at the young woman whose name was Josephine with innocent eyes. 'He is so beautiful.' The young lady thought and brought the child inside the house when he started wailing again. Having no option she had to feed him some cow milk. While Hedger ran with the empty basket on the road. The mens where near her. It would not take them long to catch her. It was then her husband threw a stick forcefully on her feat making her stumble and fall on the road. "I told you no. You are playing with nature. Causing harm to my sister who is dead and the child. Whats the use if you for your greed kill innocents. I loved you so much and what you did? Bringing a curse in this world? You are suppose to rot in hell Hedger. Where is the child? Give him to me." He commanded while she was sprawled on the road. When she didn't gave him the basket he ordered one of his men to snatch the basket from her. "Theres nothing in this basket." One of them said while showing her husband the basket. "Where is the child Hedger?" He asked furiously. "I.. i don't know." She replied him. Infuriated he slapped her across the cheek. "You will tell me. Anyhow." He gritted his teeth. While he tried to get hold of her she pushed him with all her might and ran away. She cannot let anyone near the child. Not now. Not until he grows up.
