Chapter 16: Bursts

284 Words
"Are those Starbursts?” I ask Cam who is leaning one hip on the railing and painstakingly unwrapping each candy with his teeth and one hand while he cradles the candy bag with the other. "Perhaps." "I want one." "Well come over and get one. There's this nifty thing called a door..." "Your roommate might attack me with iambic pentameter. Toss one in my mouth,” I challenge him, and he makes a face. "Katherine, you are greatly overestimating my one a.m. aim." "Please?" He rolls his eyes and winds up, squinting one and doing some dramatic practice movements. “Ready?” I’m sitting cross-legged and straighten up a bit. “Ready.” Cam throws and the first hits my forehead. The second avoids the balcony entirely and falls to the sidewalk. The third candy smacks my eyeball. Wincing and rubbing my eye I say, ”You're right. Don't quit your day job." “You're hilarious." "I know. At least the homeless man down there got some starbursts?" "Okay, here.” He twists the ripped part of the bag up tight and throws the entire thing over to me. This time, it lands right in my lap. "The whole bag? You're a friend." "I know." "I'm going to bed,” I tell him, holding my candy prize to my chest and standing up on shaky, half asleep legs. "I expect there to be at least three candies left tomorrow.” He warns me pointing to the bag playfully. "No promises, Cambriel." "Good night, Katherine." “Night." I lie in bed that night eating all of the pink ones and thinking about how excited I am to see him on the balcony tomorrow.
