Chapter 20: Out of Sync

213 Words
"Hey... haven't seen you in a while,” Cam says when he steps onto the balcony. It’s only been a couple of days, but it feels like a long time in balcony-time. I've been spending a lot of time after school studying for a horrible math test that I need to take seriously now. "I know, I've had to study at the library." He nods "Gabriel told me." I laugh, "Creepy!" He nods, awkwardly, "So... how are you?" "I'm good. Busy with school and everything. We're supposed to be getting volunteer hours and good grades and researching schools to apply to next year..." "Yeah?" "Yup." This is the first time, ever maybe, that our conversation has been so stilted. It's like we are completely out of sync. "This is awkward," He says scrunching up his nose and I give a little laugh. "Oof, kind of. Sorry." "Can I ask you a question, Kat?" He asks, leaning on the railing with shoulders more relaxed than before. "What is it?" "Are you a dementor? Because you take my breath away." He does this big theatrical wink and I make retching sounds. "Terrible." "Erased the tension though," He says with the widest, sweetest smile. "Oof," is all I can reply but I'm smiling too.
