An Offer She Can’t Refuse

Maya stormed into her office, shutting the door with a force that rattled the glass. She threw her bag onto her desk, seething. Ryan Carter. The man was insufferable. Arrogant, entitled, and maddeningly smug. How dare he undermine her like that? She had worked too hard, sacrificed too much, to let some billionaire golden boy waltz in and dictate her fate. She took a deep breath, running a hand through her dark curls. Think, Maya. Don’t let him get to you. But it was easier said than done. The way he had looked at her—so calm, so in control—like he knew he had already won. A knock at the door interrupted her thoughts. Sarah, her assistant, peeked in. “Hey, you okay? You look like you’re ready to murder someone.” Maya let out a bitter laugh. “Close. Just had a run-in with Ryan Carter.” Sarah winced. “Yikes. The new boss?” Maya nodded, sinking into her chair. “He’s trying to push me out. Wants to ‘restructure’ the team, which is just code for ‘fire whoever he wants.’” Sarah’s brows furrowed. “But that’s not fair! You basically run this place. Everyone knows that.” “Tell that to him.” Maya sighed, rubbing her temples. “I need to find a way to prove my worth before he makes his next move.” As if summoned by her words, Sarah’s phone buzzed. She checked the screen and paled. “Um… speaking of him, Ryan Carter just requested a meeting with you in his office.” Maya stiffened. “Of course, he did.” Sarah leaned in, lowering her voice. “Want me to ‘accidentally’ spill coffee on him? Might buy you some time.” Maya chuckled despite herself. “Tempting. But no, I’ll handle this.” She stood, smoothing down her blouse, and squared her shoulders. If Ryan wanted a fight, she was more than ready. Ryan’s office was exactly what she expected—minimalist, expensive, and cold. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city, and a sleek mahogany desk sat in the center, perfectly uncluttered. He leaned against it, arms crossed, watching her with that same unreadable expression. “Maya,” he greeted smoothly. “Ryan,” she returned, keeping her voice even. She refused to let him see any weakness. He gestured to the chair across from him. “Sit.” “I’ll stand, thanks.” His lips twitched, almost amused. “Suit yourself.” He pushed a folder toward her. “I’ll get straight to the point. I looked into your track record. Impressive numbers. Your department consistently outperforms others in efficiency and revenue.” Maya folded her arms. “I know.” His eyes glinted with something unreadable. “Confident. I like that.” She narrowed her eyes. “Cut to the chase, Ryan. What do you want?” He leaned forward slightly. “I’m not here to fire you, Maya.” That threw her off. “You’re not?” “No. In fact, I want to offer you a promotion.” She blinked, caught off guard. “A… promotion?” His gaze held hers. “You’re smart, driven, and frankly, you’re the only one in this company who has the guts to challenge me. I need someone like that by my side. Become my executive director.” Maya’s pulse quickened. That was a massive position. More power. More responsibility. But also… She eyed him suspiciously. “What’s the catch?” Ryan smirked. “You’d be working directly with me every day. Making tough calls. Playing at a much higher level.” Maya clenched her jaw. “And if I refuse?” His smirk didn’t falter. “Then someone else takes your spot. And trust me, Maya, they won’t fight for this company the way you do.” She inhaled sharply. This was a challenge. A power play. He was testing her. And damn it, she wasn’t about to back down. She extended her hand. “Fine. I accept.” Ryan’s grip was firm as he shook her hand, his eyes dark with something she couldn’t quite place. “Welcome to the game, Maya.” Little did she know, this was just the beginning.
