Danger in the Dark

Scene 1: A Fragile Peace The rain had stopped by dawn, leaving behind a thick fog that curled around the edges of the forest. Maya woke to the sound of birds chirping, the scent of damp earth, and the realization that she had slept through the night for the first time in days. Ryan was already up. He stood by the small window, his silhouette sharp against the pale morning light. His shirt was unbuttoned at the top, revealing bruises along his collarbone—a reminder of everything they had been through. For a moment, Maya just watched him. Who are you, Ryan Carter? She knew the basics. Ex-military. Ruthless fixer. A man who walked the fine line between law and crime. But last night had shown her something else—a man who cared, even when he didn’t want to. Ryan turned, catching her gaze. “We leave in an hour.” Maya sat up. “Where are we going?” Ryan didn’t answer right away. He tossed her a protein bar and a bottle of water. “Somewhere safe.” Maya raised an eyebrow. “That’s not an answer.” Ryan smirked. “It’s the only one you’re getting.” Maya huffed, but she didn’t push. She had learned something about Ryan—he only gave answers when he was ready. Scene 2: The Attack They had been driving for hours. The forest roads were empty, the air too quiet. Maya leaned back in the passenger seat, trying not to think about how small the car felt with Ryan so close. Then— BANG! A gunshot shattered the windshield. Ryan cursed, yanking the wheel. The car skidded off the road, tires screeching. Maya’s heart slammed against her ribs. Another shot. Then another. Ryan shoved Maya down. “Stay down!” The car hit a ditch, spinning out of control before slamming into a tree. Silence. For one breath. Two. Then—footsteps. Ryan grabbed Maya’s hand. “Run.” They bolted into the trees. Branches snapped under their feet, the forest thick and endless. Behind them, Matteo’s men were closing in. Maya’s lungs burned. Her pulse pounded. Then—a hand wrapped around her wrist, yanking her back. She gasped, twisting—Matteo’s man. “Let go of me!” She kicked out, panic surging. Ryan spun, eyes flashing murderous. He pulled his gun—one shot. The man dropped. Ryan grabbed Maya’s hand again. “Move.” They didn’t stop running. Not until they reached the river. Not until Maya’s legs gave out, and she collapsed against a tree, gasping for air. Ryan crouched beside her, hand on her face, tilting it up. “Are you hurt?” Maya shook her head. “No. Just… exhausted.” Ryan exhaled, tension still crackling through him. His hands were on her waist, steadying her. And then, without warning— He pulled her into his arms. Tight. Fierce. Like he had almost lost something he wasn’t ready to lose. Maya froze. But slowly—**so slowly—**she wrapped her arms around him, too. Neither of them spoke. They didn’t need to. Because for the first time, Ryan Carter wasn’t just protecting her. He was holding on to her. Scene 3: The Hideout & The Kiss The abandoned warehouse smelled like dust and gasoline. It wasn’t safe, but it was all they had. Ryan checked his gun. “They won’t stop coming.” Maya swallowed. “Then what do we do?” Ryan’s jaw tightened. “We fight back.” Maya hesitated. “Ryan…” He turned to her. “What?” She took a shaky breath. “I need to know the truth.” Ryan’s expression darkened. “About what?” Maya stepped closer. “Why are you really helping me?” Ryan’s hands clenched at his sides. He opened his mouth—then shut it. Maya’s heart pounded. “Tell me.” Ryan took a slow step forward. “Because I can’t walk away from you.” Maya’s breath hitched. Ryan’s voice dropped, rough and low. “Because when I saw that gun pointed at you, I—” He stopped, shaking his head like he couldn’t say it. Like saying it would make it real. Maya reached for him. “Ryan—” But then his hands were in her hair, his lips crashing against hers. A desperate, bruising kiss. Maya gasped against his mouth, but she didn’t pull away. She couldn’t. Because in that moment, nothing else existed. Not Matteo. Not the danger. Just this. Just them. Scene 4: Matteo’s Warning Across the city, Matteo Ricci lit a cigar, his smile cold. His man stood before him, bruised and bloody. “They escaped again,” the man muttered. Matteo exhaled smoke, unfazed. “Let them run.” He turned to Lisa. “Send her the video.” Lisa smirked. “Right away, boss.” Matteo leaned back, eyes dark with amusement. Let them enjoy their moment. Because soon, Maya would see the truth. And when she did? She would never trust Ryan Carter again.
