The Man From Nowhere

INSIDE THE ALPHA CHAMBER The door shut. The moon was full. Inside the kingdom, everything grew loud without him. The fight began on the ridge. Claws. Roars. Trees crashing to the ground. Ada flinched. Milo woke up crying. Lyra faced the door as she picked Milo up and pressed him against her chest. “Ada, look at me,” she said. “Is Daddy winning?” Ada whispered. Lyra held her gaze. “Your dad is doing what Alphas do,” she said softly. “He’s keeping us safe.” She carried both children to the room. Barred the door. Outside, Elena and five warriors stood guard. A young wolf came running up the corridor, bleeding. “Rogues have hit the east side! They have pups!” Elena stepped forward. “I’ll go.” Lyra appeared in the doorway. “No. You stay.” “But, Luna—” “Derek told you to guard this territory. That means us.” Her voice didn’t shake. She took the wounded wolf’s hand. “Where were you hurt?” she asked, her voice filled with concern. The wolf showed her his injured arm. “Bring the aid box,” Lyra told the others. One of the warriors nodded and hurried to get it. Another brought over a couple of seats. Lyra helped him sit and began bandaging the arm. As she worked she sang an old pack lullaby. The melody soothed the young wolf—and everyone else in the room. Milo’s crying stopped. Ada leaned against her leg. Then— The battlefield went silent. No claws. No roars. No trees crashing in the distance. Nothing. It was way too quiet. Ada’s eyes widened. “Mom?” Lyra’s face didn’t break. She pulled Ada into her lap and managed a small smile. “If anything happens,” she whispered, “you remember this.” She brushed a hand through Ada’s hair. “Your dad is brave.” Her smile softened. “And you come from brave.” Milo grabbed his mom’s fingers, holding them so tightly his knuckles whitened. Ada clutched her stuffed wolf like a shield. Elena’s head snapped toward the door. “Everyone, stay alert,” she ordered. “The fighting has stopped.” The warriors exchanged uneasy glances. Lyra looked toward the door. “But does that sound like victory?” Elena frowned. Lyra’s voice dropped. “If they’d won, we’d hear them. Cheers. Howls. Something.” She tightened her hold on Ada. “But this…” Her eyes narrowed. “It’s too quiet.” Then— Footsteps. Heavy. Familiar. Everyone froze. Suddenly— CRASH! Something slammed into the outer door. The door flew open. Kael stumbled through. He was covered in blood, his jacket torn nearly to shreds. But he was still standing. Still walking. His face twisted when he saw them. He dropped to his knees right there. Lyra halted. She moved slowly toward him. Then she turned, set Milo on the bed, and pulled Ada in beside him. Ada looked at Kael, her eyes wide. “What about Dad?” Lyra went still. No words. Just shallow breathing. Kael’s face finally cracked. “I’m sorry, Luna. I couldn’t protect him,” he rasped. Lyra’s face cracked too. She forced back the tears gathering in her eyes. Outside, Elena yelled, “Rogues are coming! We need to leave right now!” Kael looked at Lyra over the children’s heads, his face full of sorrow. “We have to go, Luna,” Elena said, already reaching for Ada. Lyra snatched Milo up. He started crying again the moment she lifted him. She took one last look at the empty bed as the tears finally fell. THE ESCAPE The kingdom was on fire. Kade’s rogues had come through the walls. Derek still in their grasp. Lyra turned to the others. ‘Kael, Elena—with me. Now.’ Milo was in her arms, still crying. Ada held her stuffed wolf tightly against her chest. Elena and the five warriors moved with them, pulling in any pack members they found. Four elders, several wolves, and a handful of pups joined the group as they raced for the back tunnel. They made it inside. The tunnel was dark and wet. They ran deeper into it, but the roars behind them grew louder. The rogues were following them into the den. A rogue dropped from the ceiling. Claws out. Elena struck him before he could reach them. “Go!” she yelled. Lyra ran, Milo fussing against her chest, Ada struggling to keep up. Ada slipped on the wet rock. Lyra lunged for her, caught her—and stumbled. Milo tumbled from her arms. For one terrible second the world stopped. “MILO!” He hit the ground with a cry and rolled toward the tunnel mouth—straight into the path of the rogues. A rogue snatched Milo up and held him against his chest. “Alpha Kade will be pleased with me,” he chuckled darkly. His face lit up with pride. “Got the Alpha's pup.” Elena was already fighting two more rogues, her claws flashing as she struggled to hold them back. The elders stood frozen. Ada screamed, "Leave, Milo, you bad wolf!” The young pups cried in panic. Everywhere Lyra looked, there were tears, blood, smoke, and chaos. Kael was still at the front, carving a path through the attackers. While Marcus, the young wolf from earlier, accompanied by some of Elena's warriors, fought relentlessly behind them, making sure no rogue could reach the others. The rogue holding Milo raised him higher. “Drop your weapon, Luna, or the pup dies.” Lyra's heart broke. She immediately shoved Ada behind her. Slowly, she dropped her knife. “I have dropped it,” she whispered, tears filling her eyes. She raised her trembling hands. “Now… let him go,” she pleaded. “Take me, not him.” Ada clutched the hem of Lyra's gown so tightly that her tiny fingers trembled. The rogue laughed. ‘Do you think I’m some kind of fool?’ In one fluid motion the rogue turned and sprang toward the ceiling, Milo still clutched tightly in his arms. They vanished into the smoke. “MILO!” Lyra let out an agonizing howl and lunged after them. Kael, finally arriving, saw her and immediately understood the situation, then grabbed her by the arm. “Lyra! Calm down." She fought against his grip, desperate to break free. But Kael grabbed Ada with his other arm and dragged them both toward the tunnel. “Move!” “Now isn't the time, Luna. The Alpha is still out there. We can't give the enemy another target. We head deeper into the tunnels—now.” Lyra stilled. He was right. She followed. They moved through the tunnel. Across a river and into the trees. They all made it out. Everyone was alive. Except a part of Lyra that had been completely shattered. She sat on the ground with Ada in her lap, staring at the smoke in the distance. Their kingdom. Her face was empty. No tears. No screams. No emotion. Just devastation. Elena knelt beside her. “We'll get him back, Luna,” she promised. Lyra remained still. Then slowly, she lifted her head. Something had changed. The emptiness was gone. She rose to her feet, the emptiness gone, something harder taking its place. She wasn't crying anymore. “Then we fight,” she whispered. Her eyes remained fixed on the flames. “For him, For everyone.” --- THE MAN FROM NOWHERE The tunnel was in complete chaos. Thick, black smoke filled the air, making it almost impossible to see. Howls echoed through the darkness. The rogue still had Milo in his arms. The little boy was crying so hard that his tiny body trembled. The rogue grinned from ear to ear. “The Alpha's pup,” he said with satisfaction. “Perfect leverage.” He turned toward the passage leading back to the rogue camp, carrying Milo with him. But then— The atmosphere shifted. No scent. No warning. Nothing. Just a shadow moving through the smoke. A dark coat appeared above them. A scar ran across the man's left eye. He dropped from a ceiling beam like a phantom, blending seamlessly into the darkness. The rogue barely had time to turn. One massive strike. A sickening crack echoed through the tunnel. The rogue was thrown into the wall hard and collapsed. He wasn't moving anymore. The stranger didn't even look at him. He simply walked toward the child. As he stepped out of the smoke, his face finally came into view. Jet-black hair. A scar over his left eye. Amber-green eyes. A silver sword rested at his side, its blade bearing the unmistakable crest of the Hunters. There was no emotion on his face. No anger. No fear. Nothing. Just an unreadable expression. He moved with effortless speed, almost like the wind itself. Then he knelt before Milo. The little boy's face was streaked with tears. His tiny hands trembled. The stranger studied him for a moment. “Hey,” he said. His voice was low and rough. Milo slowly lifted his head. His ocean-blue eyes met the stranger's amber-green ones. And then— Milo smiled. A small, innocent smile. Something shifted in the man's expression. He smiled back as he removed his coat and gently wrapped it around the boy. “Milo, right?” he murmured. “I've got you.” There was something strangely sincere in his voice. Milo's little fingers tightened around the fabric. His deep ocean-blue eyes remained locked with the stranger's. For a brief moment— The man saw it. A flicker. Red. It flashed through Milo's eyes. Then it was gone. His eyes returned to their normal blue. The stranger's expression didn't change. Behind him, movement stirred in the smoke. More rogues were coming. His eyes shifted toward them. A slow smirk formed on his lips. He glanced down at Milo again. The boy was already falling asleep in his arms, exhausted from crying. The stranger stood. And then— He vanished. Not toward the den. Not toward Lyra. Not toward the pack. Out. He slipped through a narrow crack in the tunnel wall—one no one had been guarding all along. Into the trees. Into the dusk. No words. No explanation. No one saw where he went. And when the smoke finally cleared, there wasn't even a footprint left behind. The man from nowhere was gone. And he had taken the Alpha's pup with him.
