As well as looking strong and well-fortified it also looked very romantic.
The Duc put it into her hands and then waited.
“It is beautiful!” exclaimed Malvina. “I can quite understand why you want to restore it to the condition it was in before it was destroyed. Have you a picture of how it looks now?”
“If I had, I could not bear to show it to you,” the Duc sighed. “A little of the centre of the château remains, but the rounded towers have all lost their pointed tops.
“Of course, now there is no water in the moat and although the bridge to the mainland is still standing, it has no roof.”
“You could put it all back,” Malvina suggested to him gently.
“That is what I hope and believe. In the meantime I have to be content with my new château, which I admit is most comfortable and was
