At the end of April Jesse asked for a month’s leave of absence from her job at Rooney. She informed her thesis advisor that she would be unavailable for a month. She told nobody about her plans. She bought an air ticket to Paris with an open return. She knew the Paris address of Gamma. She studied detailed Paris maps, the ones that even had street numbers and indicated one way streets. Through a travel agency she reserved a room for a month at the Hotel des Deux Mondes on the Rue Jacob. She had the travel agent call the hotel to make sure the Gamma Agency was across the street. She insisted on a room that looked out onto the Rue Jacob. She packed lightly. She didn't know how long she would be away. She could always buy clothes in Paris.
