"The soup is good isn't it?"
He breaks the ice of awkwardness around us.
"Yeah, it's thick and meaty."
"You should check the noodles out next time you come here."
I just nodded at his suggestions and queries. But this one question made me raise my head and meet his gaze.
"Where is the kid?"
I look back down and tried not to answer.
"We saw some kid's clothes while we searched. Care to explain?"
"She's my kid."
"She's blonde though, and you have black hair."
"Father's genes."
Silence fell after that. How they knew about her already terrifies me. They might just track her and get her.
I try my best to stay calm as I ate.
"So that's why you really don't want to be caught. Interesting story. A mother refuses correction for the sake of her daughter."
"So what? You probably don't understand it since you're a single person who doesn't have time for anything else but work"
"Calm down, Calm down. I was just joking. No need to get mad at me."
I just look at him with mad eyes. Hoping my stare would pierce his soul.
We separated ways that night after that.
"Let's not see each other again. Okay?"
I didn't really get what he meant. But I just nodded and went off.
I went back to the shop that night and tidied everything up. I wouldn't want them to return to a messy place.
But what if they don't? As the police have said they will get deported. But I'll have to wait until the commotion gets cleared by the Foreign affairs.
I also don't get why Inspector Park let me go that easily. Was his rib pain really that bad? or was he being generous to me.
Now I also wonder if they have identified me or what. Also if they will look for Lily.
I walk to the edge of the road where the waves crashed. And sat there waiting. For nothing.
Now I have no one once again. it seems like life gives me people for some time then drags them away.
I grab the phone out of my pocket as it vibrated.
It was a message from Doctor Jung. He asks if I'm fine and what is happening with me and Lily.
I tell him about my situation through a text message. He soon replies that I need to move and start with my plans.
I reply a Yes, though in reality I have no idea what plan I have nor where to go or what to do. I am lost. So lost.
I sit there, just trying to find where to start over again. I then remember what that officer told me.
The building doesn't have an owner now. As soon as the girls were arrested, they worked on the paperwork to get rid of the building.
I rush again to the phone booth.
"This is Senior Inspector Park of Busan Police Station. How may I help?"
Thankfully he was still on duty.
"Can you meet me here again?"
"You again? I thought you didn't want to see me."
"Please."
We then meet up again at the telephone booth.
I asked him if I can get the property transferred to my name to save it from getting destroyed.
"Are you a citizen of Korea though?"
I show him all my ID's hoping he won't notice they're all fake.
He makes his co worker do a background check on me. I really hope they find nothing weird.
"Okay you're clear. Just process the necessary papers and you're good to go. Just don't let crime go on in the house."
"They're just trying to have money, it's not like that's illegal."
"Trying to have money is not a bad thing. How you get it though is what's concerning."
"Just because you're this respected officer doesn't mean you should look down on other people."
We were both silent after that. We just looked at each other.
"Are you finished?"
"Stop calling me. You're wasting my time."
He turns back and goes to his car. He drives out and I was yet again alone.
But I knew what to do now. The next day I went around town to process whatever stuff I needed to process for this so called ownership thing.
This actually takes longer than expected. Like can't I just point a g*n at everyone to make them work a bit more faster?
This office sure does look nice. The air conditioner was also nice. The people here looked prim and proper in their suits.
While I, uhm. Yeah I haven't taken a bath yet since that time I jumped into the sea.
I hope they can't smell me. They all look so formal but I am just wearing some jeans with a tshirt and a jacket.
I need new clothes.
I got out of there the moment I finished filling up those forms and submitting all necessary documents. I'm actually happy that I knew all information needed for that. Thanks Doctor Jung.
I decided to buy some food for Lily. I plan on dropping by Doctor Go's apartment to say Hi.
I dropped by and gave her a hug. I also found out that Doctor Go invited his neice, Yu wan, over to play with Lily.
Lily is younger by a year. and she's having some trouble speaking.
I thank Doctor Go for taking care of her. He invited me for dinner, and I didn't say no since I want to spend more time with Lily.
Lily looks happy here. I'm happy for her.
Doctor Go asked me about what was happening and I explained as we watched the kids play.
He just nodded and he told me that he wishes me the best of luck in everything I do.
I smile at him. He may be annoying sometimes and I might be mean and demanding to him sometimes but he still tries his best to be patient towards me and Lily.
