May 17, 2007I lifted the wine-stained glass to my nose again. Thinking that I could still smell the wine, I imagined that we were sitting together on the bed. I had just drained the contents while Gaia laughed at me with relish. She, too, tipped her glass toward her mouth and, in one draught, emptied it. Giggling from the effort, a little drop of wine slipped from the corner of her mouth. I caught it with my finger, which she kissed as it lingered on her lips. We lay back gently onto the cool sheets, my arm draped across her belly, and kissed slowly. But just as I thought we'd stay in that position, she suddenly bolted upright. “I forgot that I left the iron on in my room!” she said. Oh, my God, I thought, what terrible timing.
