CHAPTER 15 — “ALLIANCE IN SHADOWS” **Melissa POV** The smoky room reeked of cigars and danger. Men in tailored suits leaned back in leather chairs, their eyes sharp, scanning every movement like predators circling a wounded animal. And there I stood—Selene Hart. Scars hidden beneath fine clothes, pulse of energy simmering just beneath my skin, my mind sharper than any blade in the room. The man across the table, broad-shouldered, with dark hair slicked back, studied me with faint amusement. His name was Luca Marconi, head of a human mafia that controlled half the city’s underground trade. Dangerous. Ruthless. Wealthy. And right now… an opportunity. “I hear you’ve been moving goods faster than anyone else in the market,” he said, voice low, rough, commanding attention without shouting. I didn’t flinch. “I move what I choose, when I choose,” I replied, calm, deliberate. “And I know what your people are missing—access to the villages beyond the forest, supply no one else dares touch.” He raised an eyebrow. “And why should I trust a girl who looks like she just stepped out of a bakery?” I leaned forward, letting my eyes lock with his, unwavering. “Because I know the value of loyalty… and of fear. Those who cross me rarely live to regret it—but those who join me prosper. I don’t need your protection. I need your reach. Together, we dominate.” Luca chuckled low, a dangerous sound, and leaned closer. “You’re bold. Dangerous… and strangely appealing. Most women who sit here would be shaking, begging, crawling for scraps of power.” I let the faintest smirk curve my lips. “I’ve never been most women. And I don’t beg. I take.” The air shifted. Tension coiled like a serpent in the room. The other men exchanged glances, some amused, some wary. No one moved. No one spoke. This was a gamble. A deadly one. But I had always thrived in danger. Always. “I’ll give you access to my network,” Luca said finally, leaning back, eyes dark, unreadable. “But I want something in return. I want your loyalty. And if this works… we will control the city together. Anyone who tries to challenge us… dies.” I tilted my head, considering. Loyalty was a word humans used to bind themselves. I didn’t need it. I never had. But a temporary alliance? That I could manage. And I could manipulate. And eventually, I would be stronger than him—stronger than anyone. “Agreed,” I said, calm as stone. “We move together, for now. But the day I surpass you… you will see the girl you underestimated is no longer weak.” He grinned, sharp teeth glinting in the candlelight. “I like her. Dangerous. Reckless. Perfect.” Perfect. Yes. Perfect. --- The deal sealed, I left the smoky room and stepped into the night air. My pulse was steady, but beneath it simmered anticipation. Every deal, every alliance, every whispered threat was a step forward. Kael could search forever. He could prowl, obsess, and spiral into his own chaos. It didn’t matter. I was building power. Real power. The streets were alive with opportunity, and I walked through them like a shadow, unnoticed, untouchable. I could feel the pulse beneath my skin—my own growing strength, faint but undeniable. Luca’s men would follow my commands, unaware that I was already planning the next steps, the next moves, the next empire I would forge. And when Kael finally realized that the weak girl he had tormented in the forest was now running a network intertwined with the deadliest human mafia in the city… He would feel powerless. Helpless. And terrified. Because Melissa Hart was no longer just surviving. She was taking everything she deserved.
