Chapter 3

“How could Warren do this? That bastard would never have kept the Morley Group afloat without the money your family, the Quintero family, invested back then!” My best friend was so furious she almost stormed out of the car. I grabbed her arm and shook my head. “Not yet.” When the kiss ended, both of them were red eyed and breathless, clearly still unsatisfied. Tana reached out and stroked his Adam’s apple, her voice soft and clingy. “Did you touch that old woman last night? Didn’t I tell you you weren’t allowed to touch her for a whole week? Did you do it or not?” Warren’s voice was hoarse, desire obvious in it. “Of course I did, baby. After all, the prize is your first time. How could I not do it? Just to be safe, I even slipped her some sleeping pills.” I felt as if I had fallen straight into an ice cellar. No matter how hard I tried, I could not connect the man in front of me with the Warren who had loved me for ten years. But every detail, bit by bit, kept pushing me toward the same cruel truth. Just last week, he had been stroking my stomach as he said to me, “Lolo, let’s have a baby. Starting this week, let’s take care of our health first and hold back a little.” Every night, he had personally cooked tonics for me and fed them to me spoonful by spoonful. For the sake of this Cinderella he was keeping on the side, he had actually gone this far with me. I suddenly clenched my fists, my eyes burning with tears. The girl in the car had already been coaxed into a flirtatious smile and was obviously enjoying herself. “Warren, you’re my prince! I really, really love you...” Without a moment’s hesitation, Warren replied, “I love you too. Only you.” Then what was I? I sat in the car a few meters away. My sunglasses hid my eyes, but I still could not stop the tears from falling. It felt as if someone had stabbed me straight through the heart, then twisted the knife back and forth. I took out my phone and called Warren. “Warren, where are you?” Just like countless times before, he picked up instantly. When we had just gotten married, I had once been kidn*pped by one of the Morley family’s sworn enemies. By the time I was rescued, I was barely hanging on. I was admitted to the ICU that very night. He had knelt by my hospital bed, carefully touching the scar on my neck. That tall man had been so consumed with guilt that he had practically folded in on himself. He had even slapped himself hard several times. After that, he blamed himself over and over for being in a meeting that day and missing my call, which meant he had missed my last plea for help. He had said, “Lolo, this is my fault. From now on, no matter what I’m doing, I’ll answer your calls. I promise. If I ever treat you badly again, you can make me leave with nothing. I’ll give you the entire Morley Group!” And for ten full years after that, he really had seemed to keep that promise. But now, this man was answering my call with damp lips, lipstick smeared all over his face, and his shirt hanging open. “Honey, what’s wrong?” I asked him word by word, “When are you coming back? Didn’t you say you’d be home early today?” Tana was clearly unhappy. She yanked Warren’s pants down and lowered her head. My whole body started trembling at once, and my chest felt numb and swollen with pain. Even I could not tell whether it was rage or hatred. “Mm...” Warren failed to hold back a muffled groan. Then he quickly coughed, trying to cover it up. “What’s wrong, Honey? I’ll be back soon.” Tana was bold to the extreme. The very next second, she stood up and pressed her lips right against Warren’s, sealing his mouth.
