Chapter twelve

1028 Words
Chris was taken to the therapy department, and Josie was told she would have to remain in his room, which made her uncomfortable. Josie was afraid that his memory may start coming back, and he would realize that she had deceived him. Darlene took the phone to Christopher and explained to him what her and her friends thought about his identity and that they felt Josie was not his wife. Chris had gotten used to Darlene, and felt he could trust her. “If you can open this phone with your face and your thumb print, then this is your phone, Chris,” she explained, hoping it was and he would find his identity and his family. Chris stared at her and slowly reached for the phone, hoping for all his questions to be answered. To his surprise, the phone Opened immediately with his facial and thumb print. He looked up with excitement at the tech, smiling victoriously. “You’re right. Josie is not my wife. This is my wife. Her name is Penny, and I have three children! Look at them, they’re beautiful, aren’t they?” Chris asked, smiling. Darlene hugged Chris and told them she was so happy for him and yes, he did have a beautiful family. “I need to call this woman, my wife Penny. I’m sure she’s worried about me. I’ve been gone for several days,” Chris said. Scott, having heard the whole conversation told him he would let him call from his office. Darlene wheeled him into the office. Christopher dialed the number nervously. He waited with his anxiety building with each ring. “Hello?” Penny answered, her heart beating rapidly. “Is this Penny?” Chris asked, wondering what to say. “Chris? Is it you? Honey, I’ve been so worried. What’s going on?” She asked. “Penny, I got hit in the head four days ago. I lost my memory. I had swelling and a small bleed in my brain. I’ve been here at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego since then. My billfold and phone were lost, and I didn’t know who I was. Thankfully, a sweet patient care tech brought my phone to me, and I called you from the contacts,” Chris explained. “I thought…I thought you left me,” Penny said tearfully. “Chris…you didn’t have your billfold? So, who wiped out our savings account?” Penny asked, concerned. “What? How much money?” Chris asked, seriously thinking about what had happened. “16000,” Penny told him, telling him they were saving up for a new car for her and the kids. Chris apologized to her and told her that she should call and report their bank card as stolen and any cards that he carried. “Penny…there’s this woman named Josie, and she has been telling me she is my wife and that we live here in San Diego. Who is she?” He asked, confused. “She is a stewardess that works with you that wants you for herself. She is a liar, Chris. She may have been the one to take all of our money out. Don’t trust her, Chris,” Penny warned. “I knew something did not feel right about her, and the people taking care of me didn’t trust her. She has told me a bunch of lies, but I had no idea until now,” Chris said, feeling taken advantage of. “Chris, don’t let on to her that you know anything and don’t let her know that you have your phone. I have a detective on your case, and your friend Jordan is on his way there. Tell the nurses to let him come to you, and he will unmask her. If she has your billfold and she took our money, the police will arrest her,” Penny told him. Before hanging up, Chris asked about their children. “They have been asking about you. They miss their daddy,” she told him. Chris smiled. “Can I talk to them? Can I hear their voices,” he asked. Penny called for the children and put on the speaker. “Daddy wants to talk to you guys,” Penny told them as the children gathered excitedly around her. “Daddy! Daddy we missed you so much!” Liam told him. “Daddy! Daddy! It’s me, it’s Mikey. Did you miss me? I miss you!” Michael told him. “Daddy, you come home?” Angel asked. “My sweet little children, I will be home very soon. Uncle Jordan is coming to get me. Daddy can’t wait to see you all, and Mommy too,” Chris told them, feeling anxious to see his family. “Let me tell Mommy something, okay?” Chris asked. “Penny, honey, I can’t move my legs. The doctor says it’s temporary. He says the swelling in my brain from the head trauma is causing it, and the amnesia too. I’m gonna continue therapy there when I get home. Can we…can we try not to let the kids know I can’t remember them?” He asked. “Sure Honey. I’ll be here for you and help you any way I can. I promise we will get through this, together. I love you, Christopher,” Penny told him. “I’ll be home soon, Sweetheart,” Chris said, knowing in his heart that this was his soul mate. When he got off the phone, he gave it back to Darlene. “Keep this hidden from Josie. My friend is coming with the police to get me and take me home and arrest her. I don’t want her knowing anything,” Chris told the tech. Darlene put the phone in her pocket and agreed to keep it hidden. “Let everyone know what is going on and have the doctor write up my discharge. I want to see my real family,” Chris told Darlene. Cora, Chris’s nurse spoke with Darlene and alerted security and the other unit staff and doctor to Chris’s situation. Everyone was on alert as they waited for the police to come with Chris’s friend.
