**Aria’s POV**
The bath in the royal quarters of the Obsidian Citadel is filled with steaming water scented with crushed rose petals and mint.
I submerge myself completely, letting the heat wash away the dirt, blood, and lingering chill of the Frost-Spire Pass. When I surface, my mind is still echoing with the look on Damon’s face when I held Kaelen’s hand.
Satisfaction, bitter and sweet, hums in my blood. But beneath it lies the dark reality: the Rogue Syndicate’s numbers in the canyon were too large for a mere raiding party. They were testing our borders. A real war is coming, and it will engulf the entire continent.
I step out of the bath, wrapping myself in a thick silver velvet robe.
A quiet knock sounds at the chamber door.
"Enter," I call out, brushing my damp dark hair over one shoulder.
The heavy oak door swings open, and Kaelen steps inside. He has removed his heavy combat armor, wearing only a loose black silk shirt and dark trousers. His damp dark hair falls slightly over his brow, making him look less like an unyielding monarch and more like... a man. A dangerously handsome man.
He stops when he sees me, his gold-flecked black eyes darkening as they trace the curve of my neck down to the glowing silver mark on my collarbone.
"I brought the report on the Syndicate casualties," Kaelen says, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that sends a pleasant shiver down my spine. "Brutus finished burning the bodies."
"Did Damon and his pack leave the pass?" I ask, stepping over to the fireplace.
"They retreated," Kaelen replies, walking over to stand beside me. "Though my scouts report that Alpha Damon didn't return to his packhouse. He sent Vance’s daughter back with the Crimson Fang soldiers and has been tailing our rear guard alone for thirty miles."
I scoff, shaking my head. "He’s chasing a ghost."
"He’s chasing *you*," Kaelen corrects softly. He takes another step closer, closing the distance between us until I can feel the radiating warmth of his chest. "And I can't say I blame him. Seeing you on that battlefield... you were breathtaking, Aria."
My pulse leaps into my throat. The way Kaelen looks at me isn't like Damon ever did. Damon looked at me like a problem to solve or a secret to hide. Kaelen looks at me like I am the only light in a dark universe.
"Kaelen..." I whisper, my breath hitching as he reaches out, his long fingers gently cupping the side of my face. His thumb brushes over my cheekbone, warm and reverent.
"For six months, I have fought the urge to touch you like this," Kaelen murmurs, his dark eyes searching mine with intense vulnerability. "I told myself I was giving you time to heal. That I was just your ally, your King, your trainer. But standing in that canyon today, watching that fool beg for you... my wolf almost ripped his head off."
*He wants us,* Nyx purrs happily in my mind, her white fur glowing bright. *And we want him.*
"I am done running from my past, Kaelen," I say, leaning into his touch, my heart hammering like a war drum. "I am done being defined by a bond that was broken."
Kaelen’s breath catches. A slow, breathtaking smile touches his lips before he leans down, closing the tiny distance between us.
The kiss is slow, deep, and intoxicating. It carries the weight of a thousand unsaid words, the heat of mountain fires, and the unspoken promise of protection. When his arms wrap around my waist, pulling me tight against his solid frame, the last remnants of the cold void inside my chest shatter into dust, replaced by pure, radiant light.
**Damon’s POV**
The rain outside the tavern on the border of the Shadow-Blood territory falls in dark, relentless sheets.
I sit in the darkest corner of the pub, a half-empty bottle of high-proof liquor on the wooden table before me. My cloak is soaked through, but I don't care. I haven't slept in three days. Every time I close my eyes, I see Aria leaning into Kaelen Valerius. I see their fingers intertwined.
*You lost her,* Fenrir whispers, his voice dull and dead inside my skull. *She belongs to the Lycan King now.*
"Shut up!" I slam my glass onto the table, shattering the thick crystal into pieces.
The few rogues and mercenaries in the tavern turn to look at me, but one glance at my bleeding Alpha aura makes them instantly look away.
The door of the tavern swings open, dripping water onto the floorboards. A man clad in a dark, hooded cloak steps inside, his face hidden in shadow. He doesn't order a drink. He walks straight to my table and slides into the seat opposite me.
"Alpha Damon Sterling," the stranger says, his voice raspy, sounding like dry leaves scraping over stone.
"Get lost before I snap your neck," I growl, not even looking up from my bleeding hand.
"Even if I offer you a way to break the Lycan King and take your mate back?"
I freeze. My head snaps up, my steel-blue eyes locking onto the dark hood. "Who the hell are you?"
The man reaches up, pulling back his hood. Beneath it, half his face is scarred by dark, corrupted veins—the mark of high-tier blood-magic.
"I am Commander Malakor of the Rogue Syndicate," the man smiles, revealing pointed, blackened teeth. "And I think you and I have a common enemy, Alpha."
Damon’s jaw tightens as he stares at the Syndicate commander. "You expect me to ally with monsters who slaughter pack patrols?"
"I expect an Alpha who lost his soul to do whatever it takes to get it back," Malakor sneers, leaning forward. "The Shadow-Blood Citadel is unassailable from the outside. But with your knowledge of the northern secret tunnels and our soldiers... we can take the Citadel. You get your female back. We get the Lycan King's head."
Fenrir snarls in warning in the back of my mind. *Do not trust him! He is evil!*
I stare at the rain pouring down the windowpane. I think of Aria's cold violet eyes. I think of Kaelen's hand on hers.
"Tell me your plan," I say softly, stepping into the dark.
