Chapter 8: The Shadow's Gambit

1095 Words
**Aria’s POV** The Grand Ballroom of the Obsidian Citadel glimmers like a galaxy of silver and dark onyx. Massive crystal chandeliers float overhead, suspended by ancient Lycan magic, casting a warm luminescence over the hundreds of high-ranked nobles, pack leaders, and warlords who have gathered from across the continent. Tonight is the Solstice Ball—the formal announcement of the return of House Frost-Valen. I stand before the floor-to-ceiling mirror in my private chamber, adjusting the high collar of my dress. It is crafted from woven midnight-blue silk, embroidered with shimmering silver thread that mimics the ancient runes of my lineage. The royal crescent tiara rests lightly upon my dark hair, its central diamond pulsing with faint silver energy. "You look like a goddess who descended to judge the earth." I turn to see Kaelen standing at the doorway. He wears a tailored obsidian suit trimmed with silver leaf, his royal cloak pinned to his shoulder with the Shadow-Blood crest. His gold-flecked eyes trace every inch of me, dark with intense admiration. "I feel like a target," I admit, offering a faint smile as I adjust my silver daggers hidden cleverly beneath the thick folds of my gown. "Every noble out there spent twenty years believing my family was extinct. Some of them probably profited from our fall." Kaelen walks into the room, stopping right behind me. He reaches out, his hands resting gently on my waist as he looks at our reflection in the mirror. "Let them come," Kaelen whispers, his warm breath fanning across my neck, making my pulse leap. "They will quickly realize that the last princess of Frost-Valen isn't a victim to be pitied. You are a Queen to be feared." I turn in his arms, wrapping my hands around his lapels, looking up into his dark eyes. The memory of our kiss from yesterday still lingers on my lips, hot and intoxicating. "Are you ready for the council's pushback?" I ask softly. "They won't like us declaring an immediate offensive against the Syndicate." "The council will obey, Aria," Kaelen says, his thumb gently caressing my cheek. "Because tonight, we don't just announce your return. We announce our alliance—and the beginning of a new era." **Damon’s POV** The damp dirt of the subterranean tunnels beneath the Obsidian Citadel smells of rot and old bone. I creep through the pitch-black stone passage, trailing behind Malakor and thirty of his elite Syndicate infiltrators. My hand stays tight on the hilt of my sword, every instinct in my body screaming that I am stepping into a spider's web. *Traitor,* Fenrir growls softly in the back of my mind, his voice heavy with disgust. *You are leading monsters into the home of our true mate.* *Shut up, Fenrir!* I snap back silently, my teeth grinding together. *We are taking her back! Once I drag her out of this place and break Valerius, she will realize I am the only one who can protect her!* "We are beneath the Great Keep," Malakor whispers, halting the squad near an iron grate in the ceiling. His scarred face contorts into a twisted grin in the faint torchlight. "The ball is underway directly above us. The King and your precious female are currently distracting the entire royal council." "Where are the lever controls for the northern gate?" I demand, my steel-blue eyes locking onto the Syndicate commander. "That was our deal. I open the gate for your main force, you secure the perimeter, and I take Aria." Malakor chuckles—a wet, unsettling sound. "Patience, Alpha. First, we disable the inner ward runes so my legion can cross the moat unnoticed." He points to a massive stone door at the end of the passage, carved with glowing silver wards that pulse with ancient magic. "That is the core chamber of the Citadel's defense grid," Malakor says, sliding a dark glass vial filled with glowing green liquid from his vest. "Pour this necrotic poison onto the stone anchor. It will shatter the wards in seconds." I stare at the vial. I know what necrotic poison is—it corrupts the land, killing every living creature in its radius. "This will kill everyone inside the keep," I say, my voice dropping into a dangerous growl as I realize the truth. "You aren't here to capture the keep. You're here to m******e everyone!" Malakor’s eyes flare a sickening neon red. "Did you really think a Syndicate commander cared about your pathetic love story, Alpha Sterling?" Before I can draw my blade, five Syndicate soldiers surge forward, slamming heavy iron chains around my arms and pressing poison-laced daggers against my throat. "You brought us straight past the ancient wards, Alpha," Malakor sneers, taking a heavy dagger and thrusting the pommel into my temple. "Now, watch as we burn your mate's kingdom to the ground!" Darkness claims my vision as I collapse into the dirt, realizing with horrific clarity the monstrous catastrophe I have just unleashed. **Aria’s POV** In the middle of the crowded ballroom, amidst the clinking of champagne flutes and classical music, a sudden, sharp pain shoots through my throat. I stumble slightly, clutching the silver mark on my neck as the rune ignites with searing heat. Kaelen instantly catches my arm, his dark eyes snapping to mine. "Aria? What is it?" "The perimeter wards..." I gasp, my breath coming in short, panicked bursts as Nyx screams inside my head. *Danger! The blood-barrier beneath the keep is being corrupted!* Before Kaelen can order the guards to lock down the hall, the massive stained-glass windows along the ballroom wall detonate inward in a shower of deadly crystal shards. Screams echo through the hall as dozens of dark, armored Syndicate assassins drop from the ceiling, their blood-red eyes flashing violently in the torchlight. At the head of the raid, stepping through the shattered window, is Malakor—dragging a beaten, blood-soaked Damon Sterling by his iron collar. Malakor’s dark laugh rings over the terror-stricken room. "Good evening, Your Majesty!" Malakor roars, pulling Damon up by his hair so the entire room can see his bloody face. "Allow me to introduce the guide who opened your secret gates for us!" My eyes widen in absolute horror as I look at Damon. Damon lifts his swollen, bloody face, looking at me with pure, gut-wrenching shame. "Aria... I’m sorry..." Kaelen steps in front of me, drawing his dark broadsword with a lethal, metallic shriek. His gold eyes ignite with pure, unadulterated murderous wrath. "Malakor," Kaelen growls, his voice echoing like thunder. "You just committed suicide."
