Chapter 9: The Blood-Stained Throne

1140 Words
**Aria’s POV** Screams split the air as the ballroom descends into total chaos. Nobles scatter like frightened sheep, their fine silks tearing against the jagged glass littering the stone floor. Shadows swirl around Kaelen like a rising tempest, his dark aura radiating a suffocating weight that makes the very walls of the keep tremble. "Guard the exits!" Kaelen roars to Commander Brutus and the Shadow-Blood elite. "Protect the council!" My gaze snaps back to Malakor, whose black-bladed sword is pressed against Damon’s throat. Damon hangs limp in the Syndicate commander’s grip, his face battered and blood streaming from a wound on his temple. But it isn't the physical damage that looks fatal—it's the shattered, hollow look in his steel-blue eyes as he stares at me. He realizes what he’s done. He let his desperate, possessive vanity pave the way for a monster to strike at my home. "You pathetic fool, Damon," I whisper, my voice cold as ice. "He was remarkably easy to manipulate, Princess," Malakor sneers, tossing Damon’s broken body onto the marble floor like a sack of trash. "A desperate Alpha with a bruised ego will listen to any voice that promises him his prize. But his job is done. The lower wards are dissolved. My full legion is already inside your lower courtyard." "Then you will die inside our lower courtyard," I say softly. I don't wait for Kaelen’s command. I reach into the folds of my midnight-blue gown, drawing my twin silver daggers. The royal tiara upon my head blazes, unleashing a blinding wave of silver Lycan fire that wraps around my arms and coats the blades in shimmering, divine flame. Malakor’s red eyes widen slightly, surprised by the sheer intensity of my aura. "Take her!" he commands his squad. "Kill the King, but bring the girl alive!" Ten corrupted Syndicate assassins leap toward me, their weapons dripping with black poison. I move. The world slows down. The silver light flowing through my veins amplifies my speed to an impossible tier. I dodge the first assassin's spear, sliding beneath his guard and thrusting my dagger upward through his chin. Before he even hits the floor, I spin, throwing my second dagger straight through the eye of a rogue lunging at Kaelen’s flank. Beside me, Kaelen is a whirlwind of lethal devastation. His black broadsword cleaves through iron armor like parchment, his shadow-fire consuming any rogue that dares cross his path. We cut through the squad in seconds, moving in absolute, flawless synchronization. **Damon’s POV** Pain throbs through my skull, but the torment in my soul is ten times worse. I lay on the cold marble, coughing up blood, forced to watch the horrors my reckless idiocy unleashed. Syndicate soldiers are slaughtering innocent guests, dark poison seeping into the air of the Citadel. And at the center of the storm is Aria. She doesn't need me to save her. She never did. Watching her fight alongside Kaelen—watching the absolute trust between them as they protect each other's blind spots—drags a ragged sob from my chest. I thought I was an Alpha protecting my realm, but I was just a arrogant, blind boy who traded gold for trash and destroyed the only real power I ever held. *Look at what we did,* Fenrir whimpers inside my mind, his voice fading into a weak, broken whisper. *We brought war to our mate. We are the monster.* A corrupted Syndicate rogue steps over my bleeding body, raising a heavy warhammer aimed directly at Aria’s back while she is occupied dodging Malakor’s lightning strikes. "No..." I force my broken body off the floor, my muscles screaming in agony. I don't care about my pack. I don't care about my crown. I don't care if I live to see tomorrow. I surge forward, throwing myself between the rogue and Aria. *CLANG!* The iron warhammer slams directly into my shoulder, crushing bone. I scream in agony, but I lock my jaw, driving my broadsword straight through the rogue's chest, dragging him down into the bloody snow with me. Aria’s head snaps toward me, her violet eyes wide with shock. "Damon?!" I collapse onto my knees, blood pouring from my mouth, looking up into the face of the girl I destroyed. "I... I was a fool, Aria," I choke out, tears cutting tracks through the grime on my face. "I sold my soul... but I won't let them take yours." **Kaelen’s POV** Damon Sterling taking a blow meant for Aria doesn't earn him forgiveness in my eyes—but it buys us the second we need. With the rogue distractor eliminated, Aria uses the opening to vault off my shoulder, her silver aura exploding into a roaring, dragon-like shape. She lands directly behind Malakor, her silver dagger sweeping in a lethal arc across his throat. Malakor gasps, clutching his neck as bright white fire erupts from the wound, incinerating his corrupted veins from the inside out. "This... isn't... over..." Malakor gurgles, collapsing onto the shattered glass before turning to ash. With their commander dead, the remaining Syndicate infiltrators panic. Brutus and the elite royal guard sweep into the room, methodically eliminating the rest of the host. The battle in the Great Keep is over. Silence falls over the bloody ballroom, punctuated only by the heavy breathing of survivors and the crackle of burning tapestries. Aria sheathes her daggers, her silver dress stained with dark blood, and steps slowly over to where Damon lies bleeding on the marble floor. I walk up beside her, my hand resting gently on the hilt of my sword. I watch her face closely, ready for whatever reaction she might have to her former mate's dying breath. Damon looks up at her, his breathing shallow, his life force draining rapidly onto the stone. "Kill me," Damon whispers, tears falling from his pale blue eyes. "I deserve it, Aria. I brought them here." Aria looks down at him. There is no anger in her face. No revenge. Only a quiet, terrifying pity that breaks what little remains of Damon’s spirit. "I won't kill you, Damon," Aria says, her voice echoing clearly across the ruined hall. "Living with the memory of what you threw away is a far worse punishment than death." She turns to Commander Brutus. "Bandage his wounds and throw him into the border cells. When the war with the Syndicate is won... he can go back to his empty pack." Aria turns her back on Damon forever, reaching out her hand to me. I take her fingers in mine, pulling her tight against my side as the entire royal council drops to their knees in the blood-stained hall, bowing to their true Queen. "It’s time to end the Syndicate, Kaelen," Aria says softly, her eyes blazing with absolute authority. "Let’s take the continent."
